Darn. Just about everything went wrong for a while, but one positive: we still have yet to give up in a game this year. That's a huge thing.

Okay dokie, time to do this. Unfortuately we lost. We lost = theme. And since I know losing to the Lakers is cause for all kinds of suicidal behaviors in Kingsland, allow me to present to you: Scary Bridges to Jump Off Of

Along with the grades of course.

P.S. May I also just mention that absolutely nothing has changed reagarding the Kings luck in nationally televised games? And no I am not referring to the final score. I am referring to the game beforehand going to OT and causing the enitre first quarter to not be shown on ESPN's main site. That ALWAYS happened back in the old days. Tight games, timeouts, fouls, OTs...an endless torture in the first games of doubleheaders where we were due to appear. It was beyond ironic to see it again.

Casspi ( D ) -- nope, not today, and not even close. And I remember him having a big game last year down in L.A., so it wasn't the moment or the opponent. He just got schooled on the night. He split a pair of threes in the first quarter, but was getting outsaavied by Kobe and outmuscled by Artest, although while mixing it up with the nutter he did draw an offensive foul on him. And while you can't really blame this on the player, his inability to comepte, combined with Donte apparently having slept with Westphal's mother, had unfortunate consequences. After seeing Kobe torch him a few times on defense we shied away from that matchup, obviously could not send Beno into the fray (the limitations fo the two PG backcourt were also exposed), and so had to use Reke on Kobe, resulting in massive foul trouble that helped define this game. Omri himself did very little after the first quarter, and many of his second half minutes went to Cisco, and then Carl Landry and Darnell Jackson, who Westphal experimented with as mega-SFs to match Artest's strength.

Aiguille du Midi Bridge, France -- high up in the French Alps, 12,600 feet above sea level, with the winds gusting snow flurries around you, somebody decided to stick a bridge between two peaks. Have fun.

Landry ( B- ) -- well, for the first half of this one you really had to respect Carl's scrap, in particular on the glass where he has been so inviisble this year. But then the second half rolled around, we started experimenting with him as a SF, and when we turned to him in the 4th he gave us very little. He was fighting for boards early on both sides of the gall, and was frequently down on the floor slamming around. A nice change on the glass. Hit several long jumpers as well, but Odom was just unconscious back the other way against him. We brought him back in in the middle second for a bit of our monster Cousins/Thompson/Landry frontline, and after a long struggle he finally got an important hoop +1 for us with a minute and a half to go after we had gone 6 minutes without a score. Good tough 9pt 5reb first half. Got little accomplished in the third, and was having trouble finishing inside. And the toughness on the glass disappeared as well, and he grabbed zero after half. Was back in in the early 4th and displayed some of his tunnel vision blissfully ignoring open teammtes, but did give us a little more scoring as we hung just on the fringes of making it a real game. Gave us nothing down the stretch, as he went 0-2 from the line at a critical point in the mid 4th with us down 10, and then got stripped up top in the in crunchtime to start a Lakers break and score that may have finished us. I had this a high B in the first half, a low C in the second half, and split the difference for this grade.

Hussaini Hanging Bridge, Pakistan -- hey, come to scenic Pakistan, and uh, die. Who built this and thought it was a good idea? Yes that's a raging river underneath it.

Cousins ( C ) -- well, came out ready to play and went toe to toe with Gaosl for a while, but things got sloppy late and he clearly lost the matchup. Took a quick turnaround jumper and missed for our first shot, but followed that on his next possession with a nifty baseline spin and flush on Gasol, who looked surprised. Unfortunately then got beat on the same spin back the other way by Gasol and had to foul -- had to be intetional on Gasol's part, tit for tat. Cuz came up with another nifty move on the block, but wasn't able to slow Pau at all. Some flashes, but overall Gasoil easily got the better of it in the eartly going. Got smushed twice on one very physical possession in the late 2nd that certainly looked liek fouls to me. Lost control of his brain cells in the third. After inadvertently running into Tyreke and knocking him down, scooped up the ball, stepped back and drained a three. But that was maybe not a good thing after all as he then decided, hey I can hit that! and to follow Luther Head's lead and just start chucking jumpers rather than playing inside. Took four threes in the half, and while you may or may not be abel to excuise the last couple as desperation time heaves, he was 3-13 on the night overall, 1-4 from 3pt land, and that's just not what we need. And of course 5 fouls in 20min. Dalembert fared much better on defense against Pau as well (and as expected). So some flashes, a brief bit of fun challenge of Pau in the early going, but ultimately this was very much the talented but immature kid vs. the old pro game.

Sidu River Bridge, China - less than a year old (opened Nov 2009), it is the world's highest suspension bridge at over 1500 feet above the ground. Knowing how the Chinese government thinks, that's probably exactly why they built it. The Empire State building could stand underneath it.

Udrih ( B+ ) -- probably our steadiest and most consistent player of the night, and yet the one for whom I have the fewest notes. Probably precisely because of the steadiness. With lots of guys having off and on games for various reasons, and with Reke getting victimized by foul trouble, Beno was the constant, and just kept perking along. He and Cisco in particular worked well together and produced several of our best stretches of play of the night, getting their shots, not the shots the Lakers were giving them, and knocking them down. In fact on the whole evening, I am not sure I recall Beno taking a single bad shot. It was all his little midrange pullups, and a smattering of layups. He did get victimized just at the halftime buzzer as our transition defense got exposed again and Kobe threw a 60ft pass over the top to Barnes for the layup. Beno was just too short. Drained back to back threes with Cisco in the early 4th to cut the game over sized lead back down to 15 and force the Lakers to keep chugging up the minutes with their starters. A half step late on the close to the corner as Fisher drained the backbreaking three in crunchtime.

U Pain Bridge, Myanmar -- a bridge with an appropriate name, does that look safe to you? What if I told you that it is 3/4 of a mile long? What if I also told you that it 200 years old? And 3/4 mile long. You a fan now?

Evans ( B- ) -- ah yes, what to do with this one. Maybe I should just give it an incomplete. Settling for early jumpers because the Lakers were giving them to him, but hitting them. At the end of the first quarter scooped up a ball and raced full court for the layin. Then when the Lakers tried to inbound the ball, flew over to break up the pass, collided with Odom, and came up hobbling badly with the ankle again, and had to go to the locker room with a doubtful return that would have been just our luck. But came back to the court after 10 minutes in the mid 2nd after getting retaped, and in what would become the story of the game immediately made a defensive mistake fouling Kobe on a three point shot. Was doing a nice job staying in control, not overpenetrating, and finding shooters. But he was having to guard Kobe on a night when Kobe was having one of his best overall games in the last several years, and he made the mistake of being too aggressive about trying to slwo him and started racking up foul after foul. Got his third foul just before half after a very strong defensive possession. Responded with a brillaint crossover slashing through the Lakers defense for a layup, but his night was almost over as foul trouble largely shut him down after half. Had several tough turnovers and then his 4th foul guarding Kobe in the early mionutes of the third. Came back in in the late third and immediately got the ball poked away from behind by Artest, dove after it, and commited his 5th foul, and had to sit out for basically a whole quarter and return only for the stretch run. Back in late 4th and immediately drove it for a score, but then took a dumb hero pull up three. Tried to make up for lost time and began to run one of his patented layup drills slashing again and again to the hoop in the mfinal 3 minutes, and if it had not been for Derek bleeping Fisher who knows, maybe we even get close enoguh to make them sweat. had it to 7 there at one point with 3 minutes to go. But in the end just not enough. So in the end this grade is interesting. Held down in some ways by circumstance, some ways by a questinable coaching decision by Westphal, who's issues with Donte really hurt us tonight, but who may have been treating this game as a "you've got to learn how to guard him in a big game" trainiing opportunity rather than a winning opportunity. And yet of course ultimately it was Reke doing the guaridng, nobody else, and I felt he got overaggressive as Kobe started piling up the monster stats trying to slow him down. Should also be noted that while Kobe put up a vintage Oscar 30-10-10 triple double, Reke's contributions, limited by minutes and foul trouble of course, were nonetheless largely just scoring oriented. So..a learning experience, and ultimately a B- I guess.

Captain William Moore Bridge, Alaska -- hey, that doesn't look so bad right? Well that's only until you know that that gorge its crossing is actually an active earthquake fault that they just decided to throw a bridge over. But don't worry, if it makes you feel any better they actually only anchored one side of the brdige to the ground so the other one can flop around freely if there ever is a quake rather than the brdige snapping in two.

Bench

Dalembert ( B+ ) -- another nice performance off the bench by Sammy D, continuing to provide the defensive yin to Cousins' offensive yang. Lost awareness and was greeted immediately upon entry by a Gasol alley oop, but then began to settle in and just really impede Pau. Not many players really can effect Pau's productivity, but Dalembert is so long and was just always there as a deterrent. Made a great defensive stand on Gasol on one possesion completely smothering him and knocking the ball loose. Limited statistical effectiveness before half, but played good solid positional defense on Gasol and largely shut him down in his minutes. Ramepd up the defense late in the third, getting two blocks on one possession, then running down to the other side, posting up and scoring to makle it 11. That was his only offensive highlight as he threw in a variety of ugly attemtps otherwise, and once Beno inexplicably tried to feed him in the post into the midst of a double team. Did come up with a nice professional drop off pass to Beno for a layup to cut us back to 12 in the ealy 4th. Only 2pts, but who cares? Another 10rebs 3blks off the bench as our 6th man, and continuining to be an impact player for us.

Canopy Walk, Ghana -- 1000 feet long, 100 feet off the jungle floor, and you are walking on a single plank of wood = fun!

Garcia ( A- ) -- in the game and immediately drained a corner three on a Reke kick. Scored well off the bench in the late 1st and early 2nd, notching 10 points and trying to make up for Luther Head's awfulness. Later hit a three to get us briefly back to 12 and along with Beno the only guys scoring at all in the third. As we got fesity in the 4th went up and got in Kobe's face whihc is enough to easrn him an extra half tick here. Nice to see us still fighting. Took a bad forced one on one 28ft three pointer that missed with less than 6 mintues to go that was brainless enough to almost lose him that extra half tick.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, Louisiana -- the beauty of this beastie is that it is 24 miles long right across the middle of a giant lake. Once you hit the middle of it you are entirely out of sight of land and just cruising along in the middle of a sea of water.

Head ( D+ ) -- grr, grrf and anything other grr type noises you can think of...it was amateur hour. Started the 2nd quarter and immediately drove wildy and got fouled. Just eternally seemed on the edge of being out of control. Or maybe I should say the edge of being in control, because he was on the wrong side of that standard. With us up 5 in the second scooped the ball up after a nice defensive stand by Dalembert, raced down 3 on 1, and pulled up for a stupid 1 on 1 three which slammed off the backboard. Just awful from the perimeter all night long and make you get all wistful about the deadeye shooting of such departed luminaries as Quincy Douby and Ime Udoka. Returned in the 4th to drive and miss another three. And you may be wondering how he avoided an F here. And if this were just an offensive grade, he would not have. But late in the game he did provide something else -- with Westphal still stubbornly keeping Donte pinned ot the bench, little Luther Head got stuck wiht the Kobe battling duties, and battle he did, saving some sort of face on the night. Entirely too small of course -- Head is basically the classic college tweener destined to fail in the NBA for physical reasons -- but he battled on defnse against Kobe as he got posted up, and snuck in a little baseline layup. Of course then he twice got called for fouling Fisher on the drive down the stretch and got baited by Kobe for a 3pt play at the 2:30 mark that pushed it back to 14, so even his moment of glory was tarnished in the end. But he did fight, and I am guessing that is why Westphal left him in there despite having better optiuons rotting over on his bench.

Millau Viaduct, France -- and if you just have to throw yourself off a bridge post Lakers loss, how about this nifty one to make it a scenic end? Opened in 2004, it was a the time the tallest passenger vehicle bridge in the world, standing at over 1100 feet over the valley floor.

Thompson ( B ) -- a bounceback game of sorts for JT. Offensively...well offensively he looked just as bad as ever. Rushing just everything, maneuvering into perfect position and then just blowing chippees and open looks, and it only got shakier the longer he was on the court. But where he really helped was on the glass. Its the second time this year that seeing him paired with Dalembert you became aware of just what a big frontcorut that is as they patrol the paint and scoop up boards. While Daly was challenging shots, Jason was back there cleaning the defensive glass, and between the two of them we dominated the boards during their minutes, and won the board battle at least on the game. So offense = uh, no. But 10 rebs in 12 minutes just flat out works, and was enough to get this grade.
Musou Tsuribashi, Japan -- want to see something squarely in the "no thank you" category? Watch that video of an insane "bridge" strung out over a forest filled gorge in the Japanese Alps. I have no idea what is on the far side, but there is no bleeping way it can be THAT important.

Jackson ( INC ) -- in in the mid third as Westphal again tried to counter Artest with a PF, and generally acquitted himself pretty well in his short, random minutes as a SF. Scored on a break to get us back to 13. Did a good job guardng Odom out at the 3pt line, but Odom drianed it anyway. Turned it over to start the 4th, shuffling his feet, but came back with a little side jumper as we hung around. Was rewarded by being pulled so Landry could stink up the joint in the 4th.
Road Between Tierradentro to La Plata, Colombia -- want to see some more insanity? Check out this "bridge" over a raging river in Southern Columbia. Watch it for the full 2:39 and as an added bonus you cna get a hoot out of seeing the great mecca at the far side that someone would be stupid enough to risk their life to get to.

There was a chance we'd win it, but it wasn't a likely chance. However, while there's much room for improvement, there's quite a bit to be proud about...I think the team gave a pretty decent account of themselves.

Remember when Muss tried to guard Kobe in a game with Jason Hart? I swear I had a flashback when I saw Luther Head trying to stop Kobe

Well, certainly some things never change. Watching the Lakers beat the Kings, it's like a punch in the gut every time. But if I learned anything from what the San Francisco Giants did this week it's that the eventual gratification of breaking through and toppling these smug Lakers players and their smug fans will be that much sweeter because of the pain. Lots of miscues in this one, but lots of inspiring play from the Kings as well. It's gonna be a fun season.

PS -- Dalembert gets to stay. His timely blocks almost make me as happy as Tyreke's circus layups.

good games: beno, garcia, dalembert, tyreke (when he was in)

decent game: landry, cousins, thompson

bad game: head(terrible decisions in the open court, but played good defense in 4th), casspi, westphal

Luther Head was just awful tonight. Brick after brick. Very disappointing. Cousins held his own against Pau- not bad for the rookie. Kings had a very bad streak late in the 2nd quarter when they missed 16 shots in a row. The Kings need to hit their FTs; they missed 9 tonight and they need to cut back on the threes when they're not falling. They missed 16!! The Kings at times played too rushed/excited. If Tyreke doesn't have foul trouble the game might have been a lot closer. It sucks that we lost but the Kings didn't give up and were only 7 points down at one point in the 4th. I was jumping up and down when Cisco pulled Kobe's arm. That was great. I absolutely cannot stand the Laker fans over-celebrating and pulling at their Flaker jerseys. I saw the game on ESPN and there seemed to be less of the riff-raff tonight compared to other games. I hate the Lakers and their bandwagon fans. Go Kings!!!!!!

heads defense on Kobe was absolutely the best you could ask for.... he had some very good layups off of drives... but those 3 balls.... ??? WTF!!! so horrible... if he never shot a 3 this game i'd give him a B grade...

Same here. You'd at least expect you sharpshooter to hit rim.

F- for Luther Head's jumpshot.

How do you make any shots when you jump up and move about 4 feet to the side or forward while in the air everytime? There were a few times where it looked like he didn't even have grip of the ball when he shot it.

Today's game kind of shows you that the coaches have to make a choice at some point about Tyreke & Beno. We cannot have Tyreke guarding kobe or other top 2 guards because beno is too small for them. As much as some don't want to admit, Tyreke is really playing SG with Beno on the starting line up. I know PW calls Beno a shooting guard sometimes.

I liked Cisco starting at SG before the season and I still do. I know we don't have reliable back up SGs so thats our main concern right now. We need another defensive 2 guard that can shoot to come off the bench with Beno as the 2nd unit backcourt.

i felt like a rape victim tonight.
they played a good intelligent basketball, they moved the ball well, they played a smart in and out game.
well, every thing we didn't do.
Kobe (wow..) killed Tyreke. Casspi was lost in the offense, Kobe strangled him, Landry tried to force Gasol and Odem insdie (with all the respect, bad idea), DMC looked like the rookie he is, and in the seconed half tried more shots from beihnd the arc then from the paint.
is Donte injured? he should have played Kobe this game.
in the seconed half i had a de ja voo, from last year, when we played our "one pass and boom" offense.

For my two cents you gotta have two big's on the floor when you play LA. Both Dalembert and Cousins stayed with Gasol and that left the basket being guarded by Landry facing Odom. The stats have us out rebounding the Lakers 49 to 43 but it sure didn't seem like it. And only going 6 for 22 from three point land was huge. We needed a lot from Casspi and Head but they only combined for 9 points. JT grabbed 10 boards but still has a problem making that 2 or 3 footer. Yes it was a loss but at least it wasn't a blow out.

I liked that we played hard and all but LA looked like they weren't really trying out there and they decided when it was time to shut the lights off for the night, they kindly and quickly did so. I'm just out of my mind frustrated that we can't stop anybody what so ever. I don't know what Reke was guarding Kobe for and why he doesn't play d with his feet and stop reaching so much. I don't know why Cousins shot 4 three pointers!!! Are you kidding me? Get in the low post. Casspi playing only 22 min. was a little puzzling, I guess it's because he couldn't stop anybody from scoring. Head getting all those opportunities to shoot = W.T.F. That is all [end of rant].

Sadly I didn't get to see the game so I can't comment on too much of it - just base it off the box scores. The only real glaring stat that stood out to me was Tyreke's 5 pf, sounds like he was guarding Kobe all night... Which really sounds like a job for Francisco and Donte... which brings me to the next thing that stood out - no Donte Greene again sadly. For whatever reason Head is getting minutes I think would be better served for Donte and Casspi. I'm not sure what the infatuation is with Head ( he never seems to play the way we would rather him play just sit on the perimeter and hit J's but I could be wrong this game) it seems like he's always trying to run the offense. Hopefully some adjustments will be made in the future to where Cisco can start along side Tyreke and allow tyreke to further develop his playmaking ability and work some with Cousins'. This would allow Beno to come off the bench in either position and run the offense and be our spot up shooter - but we'd be pretty solid in our backcourt D I would think. And get Donte back in the games please!

The score was close but the game was not as close as most people seem to think. In the second quarter the Kings got back into the game against the bench. After taking the lead (I think at 45-42) the Lakers starters came back in and completely stifled the Kings offense.

In the 4th when Sac made another run was against mostl bench players. Game got within 10 and LA's starters came in and shut the door.

Main things I noticed:

DeMarcus' help defense is lacking, it consists of a hack. The Kings rotation is bad and they don't fight through screens. They gave up far too many alley oops.

Tyreke scored at will but got frustrated and essentially took himself out of the game with a stupid frustration foul in the early 3rd after a turnover. Our offense looked solid when we moved the ball and I liked the consistent effort throughout the game on the offensive end.

Luther Head played horrible offensively and looked completely lost but played great defense versus Kobe in the second half.
