Awwww....Kayte, we love you too!

Boxscore

Stats: 35min 23pts (10-13, 1-3, 2-2) 4reb 1ast 0stl 1blk 1TO
Summary:

Gay ( A- ) -- this was a long way from the struggling Rudy who has been here at times this season. In this one he finished everything, got out on the break, took passes from Rondo and remained highly efficient throughout. In fact fro most of the game if you had tuned in knowing nothing about the Kings and tried to guess who was our star, you would have likely said Rudy. Now on the flipside our twin-SF frontline simply wasn't getting it done on the glass. Even Omri, who grabbed a respectable number, was getting outhustled and muscled by Trevor Booker, who is no bigger than either Gay or Omri, and Favors for o-reb after o-reb -- in fact for much of the night the best offense the Jazz had was to draw Cousins outisde, miss a shot and then let their bigs out muscle our forwards for o-rebs. But Omri at least grabbed 10 himself. Rudy? Rudy grabbed fewer total rebounds than either Booker or Favors did offensive rebounds.

Stats: 41min 19pts (7-16, 3-8, 2-3) 10reb 4ast 1stl 0blk 2TO
Summary:

Casspi ( B+ ) -- our other starting SF has himself a strong game too. He wasn't mega-efficient like Rudy, but the bulk of his points actually came off of four 3pt plays -- 3 threes, and a +1 that he started his game off with. But he played a good floor game until several mistakes late in the game made when he was actually TOO unselfish, and passed up shots he should have taken, leading to rushed shots or turnovers by others. And of the two starting SFs he was the better guy on the glass, although there were notable stretches early, and then in the 3rd when he wasn't getting it done and Trevor Booker would be wading in and standing right shoulder to shoulder with both Omri and Rudy and yet winning every board battle. In fact in the late 3rd in a strange sequence that seemed like we weren't sure if we wanted Boogie to leave the game or stay in, we eventually finally resorted to pairing Boogie and Kosta together on the glass to finally get control of things. It wasn't a perfect game in any aspect, but it was strong across the board play, and with his threes he did what you have to do as a counter when you're a smallball PF.

Stats: 37min 23pts (8-14, 1-3, 6-10) 12reb 6ast 1stl 0blk 5TO
Summary:

Cousins ( B ) -- the big guy put up about as quiet a 23-12-6 game as you are going to find. After the terrible trip, really wasn't forcing things at all, and indeed may still have not exactly felt up to dominating. But he wasn't settling. I saw somebody complaining about how much time he spent outside, but actually this was about as close to inside Boogie as we have seen under Karl this year. There were several more threes of course, but mostly he was judicious about the outside stuff, and we gave him a number of postups, from which we largely got good things to happen. but there was no push to dominate with it, and for most of the game he just lied back, contained Favors, and was a solid presence in the middle without ever being the most important guy on the floor. When the Jazz came to double, he was a willing passer racking up assists out of the post. While the additional passing did bring a return of the turnovers, most of those were in the open court or from up top trying to create too much. Late in the game helped us seal it with maybe the first sustained burst of interior attacking dominance of the game. But as I said, for the most part this was a ho hum, quiet take it for granted 23-12-6 rather than a truly dominant one.

Stats: 26min 10pts (4-6, 2-4, 0-0) 2reb 2ast 2stl 0blk 1TO
Summary:

McLemore ( B- ) -- played well enough that his eventual banishment to the bench while the other starters continued on for big minutes seemed odd, although I think the answer may be on the defensive end of the floor, where Ben's stubborn refusal to keep contact with his men aided a 35pt night by the Jazz SGs. But before his disappearance in favor of a largely ineffectual Collison, Ben had some good moments in the early game on the offensive side of the ball. He started the game off hitting a buzzer beating 3 to save a possession Added several layups and a good rebound, and hit another three in the early 2nd. But he got quiet thereafter, I don't think ever scored again, and while it may not have quite been the normal Ben disappearing act, Burks and Hood won the battle in a big way form that point on, and Karl began experimenting with the other rotation options.

Stats: 37min 17pts (5-8, 2-3, 5-7) 7reb 13ast 2stl 0blk 6TO
Summary:

Rondo ( A- ) -- let Neto blow right by him several times early in the game, which just shouldn't happen. But was playing his normal game directing the offense, and this time out was both hitting his threes as well as occasionally squirting on through to the rim (easier with no Gobert). He also came up with a few more great hustle plays, including a great steal at the the end of the half to get us one extra shot. There was some slop, in the 3rd in particular, that helped keep the Jazz in it, but more moments of brilliance, including the Sportcenter friendly around the back dribble and dish to Gay in the open court in the mid 3rd. At the end of that quarter showed the headiness again coming up with a well timed +1 to push the lead back to 10 and slow a Jazz run as we had started to struggle. And down the stretch of this thing even hit FTs.

Bench

Stats: 25min 6pts (3-8, 0-3, 0-0) 0reb 1ast 0stl 0blk 0TO
Collison ( C- ) -- missed his threes and played a lot of minutes without getting much accomplished, presumably just because his name was penciled into that rotation spot by the schedule. Down the stretch he made a minor contribution, hitting two of his little pullup jumpers. But that was about it. No rebounds, a single assist, and Rodeny Hood feeling perfectly comfortable bombing threes.

Stats: 20min 10pts (3-7, 2-5, 2-2) 1reb 2ast 0stl 0blk 0TO
Belinelli ( ) -- didn't do a whole lot, but what he did do was well timed.

Stats: 18min 6pts (3-5, 0-0, 0-0) 4reb 0ast 0stl 1blk 0TO
Koufos ( ) --

placeholder...

I'm going to have to go with Rudy. He is showing excellent poise and has been dominating downlow when there isn't a huge presence lurking. Showed alot of composure out there and was money on the low block.

its beyond me how we havent won more games. Well it isnt but Its so frustrating with the squad and talent we have.

We lack consistency across the board.

We currently have without being overly positive: The best passing PG in the nba, The best big man in the nba, One of the best but inconsistent SFs in the nba and squad depth.

please stay healthy and just play hard.

I noticed some time late last season that, during virtually every home win, the Kings play Ludacris' "Stand Up" in the arena, on their last offensive possession. So now, when we have a game in the bag, it's time to Cue Luda.

the kings played pretty well tonight. i'm still infuriated by the defensive schemes that this team employs, but overall, i was pleased with the offensive execution--the team largely played inside-out, which is the best way to make use of a big like demarcus, particularly with omri casspi in the starting lineup to drain a few timely three's. and i was also pleased with the team's defensive effort. the scheme is certainly nonsense, but the effort was visible, and that's a start. having lost WCS for 4-6 weeks is going to be a major bummer, though. it'd be nice if cousins and koufos could share the floor together for stretches of the game, but they haven't yet proven very effective side-by-side. with these small ball lineups, and with demarcus still not at 100%, the kings' rebounding advantage is just going to disintegrate...

Not much we can do with WCS out

On another note, Ben should be shooting at around .425% (from 3) after the stats get booked tonight, after going 2/4 from 3. I'm really liking what he's doing so far, with a couple hiccups in the road. Seems to be improving as the season goes on, and looks more active as we roll on as well. Probably learning a thing or two from Marco. Actually i'm 100% sure he is.

Team played well hopefully this is not the typical false hope game which there have been plenty off. I don't get why Cousins for a whole game does not stay in the paint on the glass hes got the best hands in the Nba he could easily put up 20/10/5 without ever taking any form of jump shot just with basic effort. That today was the most complete game hes played all year in terms of making everyone better and he didn't force anything around the rim.

Just simplify his game and stop bailing teams out with jumpers. Doing so increases his and the teams efficiency and it allows him to save energy where he can lockdown the opposition big man.

Rondo, Ben, Casspi, Gay Cousins actually works very well for the most part I would say against MOST teams as long as Cousins is working in the post, especially with Casspi and Ben both shooting the three ball at a great clip, Rondo being much improved from there and Rudy being solid. Gay, Casspi and Ben can generally switch those three positions on defense and fare well for the most part. You lose a little rebounding power but Ruy and Omri are both pretty competent there, Booker and Favors are just really good offensive rebounders. I could see Karl sticking with that lineup even when WCS comes back, Casspi has certainly earned the 30+ mpg on a consistent basis role, what a bargain that contract is.

I said its going to take 3 wins in a row before I feel good about this team or have any confidence going forward. That's one down. Two to go.

Even though numbers were modest Ben looked really good tonight. The whole dynamic of our team changes when we have a real SG on the floor instead of a guy just running up and down. I would like to have seen Karl ride Ben longer instead subbing him out at 4:00 mark. Guy had a game going. Give him a little extra run.

Cousins did a better job most of the night not forcing plays. Then he got tired and inspired by Rondo and tried to be Rondo and end up with 5 TOs mostly unforced. Still bruising in the paint and just outclasses Favors who looks so heavy footed and unskilled by contrast.

The game turned when we went big with 2K and Cousins and crashed the boards. 2K was great defending in the paint in that stretch.

Next game is set up nicely with NYK playing tomorrow night in Utah.

I really don't want to sound negative at all, but I think one of the main reasons why we won was because Utah literally had no one to match up against Cousins and Gay. This is not a bad thing at all. Favors is a bit smaller than Cousins, and he doesn't have the power to match up on him. (Which is also why he struggled on offense, he had trouble against Cousins' size). On Gay, they had Hayward who has the length, but he doesn't have the size. Rudy powered him 8/10 in the paint and around the rim. He stood no chance, and they actually put Burks on Rudy a couple of times before they saw that he sucked worse, and put Hayward back on him.

Today was an example of us exploiting their matchups.
For the most part, it was:

Neto on Rondo
Hood-Ben
Hayward-Gay
Lyles-Casspi
Favors-Cousins

On the defensive side, we actually put Casspi on Hayward a bit in the beginning of the game. Casspi is just as quick as Hayward is, AND he has the length. Hayward is a player who doesn't use a lot of his size to power, but he uses his quickness. We saw Rudy and Ben occasionally guard him too.

So we basically exploited their lineups with Gay-Casspi-Cousins..a smaller lineup.

I think the lineup would work great against a smaller team.

Rondo and Cousins played good tonight, but Rudy is the guy who gets my vote.

He's been criticized a lot this season, some of it justified, some not. I'll be the first to say that l've been pretty hard on him. Meanwhile, the guy never makes an excuse. Class act. I'm done being so damn negative with this team.

Truth of it is, we really need Rudy. Just like the rest of this squad, if one cog is out of place everything goes to hell. Rondo and Karl are definitely forming a bond. DMC will get healthy which in turn will in turn let Rudy be the Robin we deserve. Casspi will continue to be the heart of this team. Our bench is more than solid. Karl will find away. In Vlade I trust.

One game at a time. Go Kings.

As a negative, griping, cynical SOB who never has anything good to say, but says stuff anyways....

.... I approve this message!

Ws are awesome. Lets get some more, and maybe even I'll get positive and optimistic again!

It was a toss up between Rudy, Omri and Rondo for player of the game but I had to go wth Rondo for two reasons.
1: invoking the spirit of white chocolate
2: making free throws

I have to say Rondo has become my favorite King. I love his attitude. He exudes calm and confidence. He's been there, done that and it shows.

Rondo gets my vote tonight for being the great floor general that he is and knocking down those clutch free throws! All I want for Christmas is to get a good, long win streak going. Got #1 today and let's go for #2 on thursday!

I 2nd this.

I knew that Rondo is a very intelligent guy and I don't mean that thing called BBIQ. Rondo has more of the latter as well than pretty much any player in the NBA. I was scared when the Kings signed him, because he can be problematic towards his teammates as well - the so called locker room problem. However, I have been more than positively surprised by his commitment towards the team. It looks like he has everybody's ear and players really admire his vision and like to play with him. When I saw Rondo's reaction to George Karl's trust concerning his free-throws, I understood that here we have a two way relationship that will take this team up big time. One of the great signings of the year in the NBA!

It drives me crazy, absolutely crazy, to see cousins park himself above the 3 point line on every offensive position. It's a waste. It doesn't make any sense to me.

My wife nudged me in the shoulder in the 4th and asked "is that right? Cousins only has 14 points?"

Why do you think I've been pleading for him to get under the basket?!? And when he finally moved into the paint he couldn't be stopped.

I said its going to take 3 wins in a row before I feel good about this team or have any confidence going forward. That's one down. Two to go.

They won't. There's no way with the defensive scheme that's in place. Good teams win some games due to good offense, some games due to good defense and other games due to both good offense and defense.

The Kings can only win games on good offense alone. Only a couple times this year have the Kings played legit good defense for a game. Usually the "good defending" games we have consist of teams bricking completely wide open three pointers. Most nights that make it seem like our team is playing good defense is actually because the other teams offense isn't clicking. All other teams have to do is run a screen and they either A) have a complete mismatch or B) have a wide open 3 pointer that they can take a few seconds to think about before pulling the trigger.

Impossible to win on a consistent basis with the scheme that's in place because lets face it, the offense isn't going to click every single game. Good teams can win even when they're offense isn't working. This team cannot.

I really enjoyed watching Rudy last night. When he's aggressive and attacking the paint NOT settling for jumpers he's like watching Dr. J throwback highlights.

Awful perimeter defense will hold us back. That needs to be fixed. Still don't get why our guards are helping in the post

I think we got to get over that kind of thinking. I very seldom write anything when I watch games, but I always keep the box score open. In this last game I was very impressed about the fact that all the starters were in double figures almost simultaneously. That is a very good sign of team ball. Cousins has his very notable impact on the Kings game regardless of his point score. In our minds we have switched between DMC's stats line and winning games. We should take a closer look at the Spurs. They don't care about stats lines. They only care about playing good BB and winning. We should follow suit.
