Girls is nice. Girls is great. But they were always intended to be an occasional spice, not a nightly event.

We looked dead tired all night, even during the first half where we hung around. And then when the Grizz pushed in the third, we just collapsed. And something needs ot be done about our rebounding. Maybe a healthy and in shape Reke can help a bit, but the issues run deep.

Ok, and so now without further ado let me introduce a new concept in Kingsfans grading: The Kingsfans Grading Consortium. Let's call it an experiment in the democratization and timliness of the grades in these threads. Its a small cabal to start, tonight I expect only two posters to join me -- Bajaden, and Capt. Factorial. Others have been contacted and may appear in the future. We'll be divying up the grades, putting more eyes on the game, and getting the grades out faster. Or at least that's the plan. We'll see how it goes.

Tonight the Grading Consortium is:
Bricklayer
Bajaden
Capt. Factorial

And oh yes, we got blown out, so we'll decorate the grades as per usual when we lose by lots.

Salmons ( B ) -- If I were using a sliding scale, based on the rest of the team, he should get an A. But on a night when the rest of the team looked like they were playing in mud, a B is the best I can give. Salmons was the best player on the floor for the Kings tonight. No offense to Salmons, but that says more about the rest of the team than it does him. He scored the first basket of the game for the Kings. Had his second shot blocked by Gay, but it was all John in his matchup with Gay the rest of the way. He got a gift of a wide open three on a broken play, and ended up with 13 pts on 5 of 9 shooting in the first half.
He started the second half with a 2 pointer coming off a screen, picking up right where he left off in the 1st half. He came back later with another 2 pointer off a screen at the top of the key. The rest of the time he made life miserable for Rudy Gay, who struggled all night against Salmons. On both ends of the court. All in all, it was a good game for Salmons, who appeared to be one of the few Kings with energy. Salmons didn't see much of the 4th quarter. By the time he would nornally come back in, the game was already over. -- Baja

Thompson ( B- ) -- junk baskets again for exellent efficency in the early going. Follows, running the break. Threw in a post move and a pass to cutting Salmons as well. Kept not getting rebounds cleanly and trying to just knock them out of there, and then eventually losing the rebound battles altogether. Maybe more time in the weight room is called for. Knocked down another open shot in the early third, but we were getting pummeled inside on the glass in particularand he was eventually pulled, never to return. Spent most of the night gaurding Gasol, and did a solid job against him. Gasol got a lot of his numbers against TRob and Chuck. Bottomline here is JT is playing very efficiently on offense, jsut exactly what you would ask for. But he used to outwork people on the glass, and now he's getting outworked. And with so many poor rbeounders maongst our smaller guys, he simply has to be strong ont he boards for us to compete in there. --Brick

Cousins ( D ) -- you know, tired is often an excuse. But it can also be the truth., And from the very beginnign of this one Boogie just looked tired. Adn as we all well know, Boogie is a perfect conduit -- whatever he is feeling from moment to moment will be right there in front of you to see. Was actually playing some good physical defense on Randolph in the early going, but on offense it looked like he was having to force himself into aggressiveness. Settled for several long jumpers and they were short off the front of the rim. Kept on hitting the floor like he did not have his legs and this was a sloppy old style looking DeMarcus game. Settled in and begant o get mor phsyical, win some of those rebounding battles, but it seemed to come in little spurts rather than long stretches. Showed some intelligence after his jumpers looked tired wnd short, and drove instead and kicked to Cisco...who of course brickd it. Began to ge frustrated after half, with the refs, with himself, but durvived it, and seemd to almost visibly suck it up for one more burst of action, getting ont eh glass and tryign to slam inside to getto the line as the game spiraled wildly out of control. Best way to describe this would just be "did not have it tonight". And neither did we. -- Brick

Stats: 17min 0pts (0-3, 0-3, 0-0) 1reb 2ast 1stl 0blk 0TO
Garcia ( D ) -- in the early going made a very nice unselfish pass on the break to give Cousins a layup, but was quickly beat back down the other way by Allen. And just continuies to not hit anything. Was flying around on defense in the early 3rd. But when you cannot any shots at all the very best you can do is play somebody to a tie, and that's if you stop them every single time. He did not. -- Brick

Ginny Weirick

Stats: 29min 9pts (2-12, 0-7, 5-6) 2reb 4ast 0stl 0blk 1TO
Thomas ( D- ) -- Recorded three assists in the first five minutes and then didn't get another until a garbage-time home-court dime to Travis Outlaw (who took two dribbles and 5-6 steps before shooting) with 30 seconds in the game. Did not participate much on offense in the first quarter. Got dribble picked by Conley early in the third, then went into hero mode, first taking a bad three, then put his head down to take two dribble drives in a row as soon as Brooks showed up at the scorer's table. Stayed in hero-mode when he came back in, forcing up three shots in two possessions and innumerable bad threes once the game was out of reach.

Defensively made two nice stops against Tony Allen drives, but crashed the offensive boards too aggressively in two consecutive possessions resulting in two Memphis fast breaks. Didn't hustle back on a fast break in the third, leaving Conley open for a preventable three. Wasn't a complete liability on D because the Memphis offense focused elsewhere.

Overall, didn't run offense terribly effectively after the midway point of the first, and spent most of the second half in ugly hero-ball mode. --Capt.

Johnson ( D ) -- If JJ hadn't made two baskets in the game, he would have been invisible. He had zero impact on the game, and both shots he made were forced shots that went in. His first, a floater that hit the backboard and bounced in. His second, in the 2nd half was a fall away jumper that got the lucky roll. His claim to fame in the game, was allowing Gay's first basket of the game. I don't want to pick on him to much because he had a lot of company. But he's normally a high energy guy, and tonight he was sleep walking most of his minutes. -- baja

Stats: 23min 8pts (2-5, 2-4, 2-2) 1reb 1ast 0stl 0blk 1TO
Brooks ( C- ) -- Came in to start the second quarter with Kings offense still not running through the PG position. Started slow but hit two big threes, then hit an open Tyreke under the basket with a killer bullet pass for his lone assist. Late in the second and in the third made several nice passes trying to run some semblance of an offense, but his targets couldn't connect. Once the rout was on, started pounding a bit and then took a terrible 27+ foot three with 10 seconds on the clock. From that point, the three-guard lineup was on and there was no saving anything.

Defensively, played Conley/Bayless too loose when off the ball for the majority of the night, but the Grizz either didn't attack it or made mistakes on most occasions. Got burned to the hoop once by Conley (missed) and once by Ellington (passed out). As for IT, the Grizz generally didn't attack IT on offense.

Overall: Not very involved on either end, but hit a few good shots and at least tried to run an offense from time to time while the game was within reach. -- Capt.

Fredette ( F ) -- well..don't know what to say here. After a while you're just tossing insults at the guy. Struggling would be too kind a word for this slump. And with Reke and Thornton coming back, it could not have come at a worse time for him securing future minutes. In his last 4 games he's now 2-19 for a total of 10pts 0rebs 2assists, and 7TOs. Its really bad right now. Some of it is the opposing teams. They are paying attention and he's getting smothered. Happened again tongiht, and again he ended up forcing attemtps on drives for misses and turnovers. What made it even worse in tis one was that Wayne Ellington was just bombing shots in his face the other way for ridiculous production. Bottomline Jimmer has to be better, much better, than this to continue to deserve minutes. --brick

Robinson ( B ) -- this was actually a hard one to grade, and if the fourth mmeber of the Consortium had had time this first run through, would have been interesting to see what he did with it. Instead, its me again, so let's see: a real mess coming on off the bench in the first half. Just forcing and forcing for ugly ugly turnovers. And then they brought in Gasol and it was just no competition. He got pulled, went to the bench, walked by the coach who did not look at him, and not one guy even reached out to slap hands. Came back late in the thrid wiht the game spiraling, presumably as a desperate attempt to give us rebounding which neither Jaosn nor Chuck were doing. Started off the half shaky again, getting scored over by Speights, actually hitting a long jumper after the Grizz just begged him to take it at the end of the third, then making a bad decision to pass on an open shot, wait for the defender to smother him, then take the same shot contested. Did not go of course. But then, and here is the difficulty, then something suddenly changed. Finally had a moment in the early 4th, got a steal in the backcourt, an offensive board and follow, and all of a sudden he was a different player, all energy and hustle on the boards, and was overwhelming the Grizz reserves in there on his way to a career board night. Didn't get any better on offense, still struggled to finish and when he went back and tried his 1 on 1 drive thing again it again did not fall. But found a way to be productive bouncing aroud the offensive glass for big results. So what to do with this? Terrible when the game was on. But found a niche to big numbers in the garbagetime (should be noted the Grizz were cycling starters through for large chunks of that garbageitme, so slightly less garbagey) and notched a career board night. Its possible a "+" could be stuck on here. I am sure it would have been had it still been close when he blew up. Still, a promising moment for him. Just wish he could stay focused on playing that way. --brick

Hayes ( D+ ) -- 3 guys who have completely gone south on us in recent games are Cisco, Jimmer and Chuck. We're just getting huge bundles of nothign out of their minutes. Chuck came iuna nd did almsot nothing again. Some physical defense on Gaosl on a couple of possessions was the good of it. Getting pummled on the glass the bad. Having our genius coach, while our backups were dying, actually draw up a play out of a timeout, and the play is a pick and roll designed for Hayes, whiel the Grizz had their massive starting frontliune back there to meet him, the comical. Got 2 FTs on a play where any big man not small enough to audition for the Wizard of Oz woudl have got the dunk and given Reke an assist. I'll slap a "+" on this D just for giggles to try to separate it a smidge, but its delciate enough that if splits that pair of FTs I probably go straight D. --brick

Evans ( C ) -- FINALLY into the game late in the half after the coach simply refused to play him as out scrub guards choked the led away. Looked a little heavy and sluggish to me, but immediately helped on the glass and with passing. Gave us one of our few sparks and he and Brooks resumed their working relationship setting each other up. Kind of forced to shoot a few times in this one, but was clear he was not comfortable doing so yet and wanted to pass. In much quicker in the third, gambled for a steal on Allen, and missed. But did a nice job tying up Rudy Gay on the break for a jump ball. Still not looking as quick as he can, but but began to force the action to the hoop in the late 3rd. Seemed set up to get his legs back with a long garabgetime run, but our wizard of a coach decided that Travis Outlaw would get a lot out of instead. Whatever. Anyway, this was ok for with it was. It was nice to actually have some real talent on the floor for spurts.--brick

Biggest disappointment? THE WHOLE TEAM.. Whats the deal with 14 assists 14 TOs?

I can't blame it on Evans because he only played 12-13 minutes.

Yes you can, where there's a will there's a way. Did you know that Evans caused TRob to miss the open layup at the end of the game because Evans let out some bad gas? Evans has also been slipping tapes that play "I am a bad shooter" under Garcia's pillow at night. It is also none other than Tyreke Evans, who has been bribing Keith Smart to feature Travis Outlaw in our offense, and who blackmailed Petrie into signing Brooks in order to take away IT's starting position.

Re: Poll

I voted for Honeycutt just for laughs since he was horrible like so many Kings tonight. Actually, couldn't decide between Thomas and Cousins for biggest disappointment.

Boogie for me. Tonight was his first real test against an upper-echelon frontcourt to show he turned a corner and he faltered again. Being able to only Feast on the Aaron Gray's and Tyler Zeller's of the world won't make us a playoff team and won't help Boogie's cause to be a franchise player. He's got to learn how to deal with physicality and fast.

I think you have to vote for Cousins today cause of his recent play and where he leads we will try to follow.

It was nice to see reke out there again and he was moving the ball it was a pain to watch our small guards leave him out of every play they could and ignore cousins when they could also.

Recent conversation with Mac got me interested in a little project. How would Cousins and Robinson compare in their first 30 games as professionals?

Usually don't like per stats, but for the sake of this comparison, I put both guys on a Per/30 min scale. Cousins was at 25 MPG his first 30 games and Robinson at 15

Thomas Robinson:
9.1 PPG
8.1 TRB
1.25 Steals
0.81 Blocks
1.25 APG
42 FG%
2.56 TO
3.75 Fouls/game
8.6 shots attempted

Cousins:
13.6 PPG
9.1 RPG
0.81 Steals
1.7 APG
0.744 BPG
41 FG%
2.88 TOV
4.8 Fouls
12.7 Shots attempted

While PER stats are purely hypothetical, it might shock a few people to see how similar they are if they were given the same role as rookies. Give Trob the same amount of time/shots as Cousins got as a rook and we'd likely be looking at very similar production from both guys.

Purpose of this is not to compare the two players, but to get people to understand that rookie bigs take time to acclimate to the NBA game. No one should be worried about Robinson 30 games in. Where we start to worry is if we don't see improvement 100 games into his career like Cousins did after struggling the first few months

Thing is just from watching Cousins you knew he was ultra talented (and had good NBA size) atm I just don't see that from T-Rob I'm not a fan of stats they don't mean much to me, I watch the games and from that make an opinion and I'm really not impressed with anything T-Rob brings that made him a lottery pick so far. Just cause its early in his career does not mean he can't show hes a very talented player in limited mins. Can he get better sure but we in a lot of ways just don't really need/have much use for him on the team atm.

Tbh im far more interested seeing what Honeycutt can be at the SF than I am in what T-Rob can @PF

TRob is putting a lot of his stats up in garbage time, while Cuz was one of the main focuses of our offense in his rookie year. And as Andremiller07 said, there's really no comparison in terms of talent level. TRob hasn't shown good handles, good hands, an ability to get to the rim, a post game, an outside game, good defense etc. There was a good mix of all of Cousins' assists from his rookie year on YouTube. We haven't seen anything remotely close from TRob. Now you are basing your opinion on Robinson's play at Kansas, and that's all fine and dandy, but as far as I'm concerned he has not shown me any special potential star talent at the NBA level.

This is the problem with people who totally disregard stats and "go with their gut" and are in awe of the "wow plays". Again, the purpose of this is not to draw a comparison between the two players as I think Cousins will end up being the better player in the long run. It does not change the fact that Cousins was fairly atrocious his first 30 games in the NBA and actually hurt the team by being on the floor during that stretch with his atrocious shooting numbers, High foul and TO rates, and poor defense. You can scream "potential!" and "Star quality!" all you want, but he didn't show it during that stretch of games.

Now, Cousins made the necessary adjustments and has started to tap into his potential (although still has a way to go). He made his adjustments after his terrible rookie year and is starting to make a case as one of the top young bigs in the NBA and rising stars. It remains to be seen if Trob makes those same adjustments, but he needs the minutes and game sample size to show whether he can or not.

I just don't see how you're righting off Trob as a potential star player when we have living and breathing proof on our team with Cousins and JT that it takes young bigs time to grow into their skill set and potential.

Its not about wow plays/gut feeling or stats its who has the biggest impact on the game when I look at games in general.

Impact on game>wow plays/stats

On a side note it just seems like in losses (and in some wins) we got to many players trying to do things they are ethier not good at or shouldn't be doing at all under any circumstance.

Cousins: shooting mid range jump shots, I ask why? while you have a decent looking stroke/feel hes been horrid this year from mid range. Why not post up or drive in particular on players like Z-Bo the one time he went strong at Z-Bo he got a and1 lay up, matter of fact theres not a player he shouldn't drive/post up on if hes going strong. I can't remember the last time I saw him use his half hook which when used has been his money shot. If he wants to shoot more mid range jumpers work on it in the off-season not during games. When we win its cause Cousins has his big *** planted in the paint creating for himself and others and even if he misses in the paint it opens up easy garbage buckets for JT. I honestly don't care how many times he misses if he goes strong to the rim, hes going to put pressure on defenses and draw fouls no matter who is guarding him weather it be Tyson Chanlder or Tyler Zeller.

Jimmer: Catch and shoot it, if you have to take more than one dribble don't do it when Jimmer takes more than 2 dribbles the play normally becomes useless and ethier is a insanely hard shot or a turnover.

The PG's: forcing there way into the point and making it hard for themselves to get a good shot or make a decent pass, just make a simple pass let Cousins/Reke/Salmons do the penetration and you stay out on the 3 point line waiting for the open look. The other thing which really annoys me that the PG's don't do is they are both as quick as it gets and when have they ever picked up a oppostion PG and dogged them full court? It only seems they are quick on offense, both with that quickness should be trying to take time of the shot clock and wear down oppostion guards its not like Brooks/IT are playing extended mins and have to save there energy.

Robinson: other than rebounding the way hes going, he really shouldn't be doing anything outside of that in this point in time, but yet he goes hero mode non stop.

Players need to do things they are capable off and are there strengths, if the coach is too much of a idiot to point it out surely the player himself can see it.

You think so huh?

I would say you have totally lost persepctive on Thomas Robinson except I worry that you never had any. Recent comments, and encouraging comments, indicate even HE doesn't think he is going to be a star. There has not been one extended moment of star stuff from him from the moment he left college. Not a game. Not even a half that I can recall. There have been some flashes of good active roleplayer stuff, so that remains in play as a possibility. But its the only way he has ever significantly impacted a professional game.

I could put up similar stats, in fact better stats than TRob has put up for dozens of rookies who also never had/have a chance to sniff DeMarcus's fumes. By this point in the season we had already seen dozens of moves by Cousins that basically no other center in the game could perform. In fact I was convinced of it by the end of summer league. His potential brilliance was obvious. There's never been any of that with TRob. There are good reasons why he doesn't shoot more. His offensive role is limited, and even still it may be too expansive. He's very likely not in training to be a star so much as in taming to be a roleplayer.

Here's some guys, of various degrees of serviceableness, several fellow rooks, several former Kings, several possible comparison points, and their per 36's (sorted by FGAs if that is the new issue):

Udonis Haslem 11.0pts (.459 .000 .765) 9.5reb 1.0ast 0.7stl 0.5blk 1.5TO on 9.0FGA
Gustavo Ayon 10.6pts (.536 .000 .619) 8.8reb 2.4ast 1.8stl 1.5blk 1.5TO on 8.6FGA
Meyers Leonar 10.2pts (.546 .000 .886) 7.6reb 0.4ast 0.7stl 1.7blk 1.4TO on 7.2FGA

Now did all of those guys have the potential to be stars too? Indistinguishable from Boogie? If so than basically ANY player drafted has potential to be a star. But we know better. You watch players, you watch what they can do, what they can't do. You watch their size strength,, who they get their numbers against. Of all the guys on that list only Hawes ever flashed any star level stuff as a rookie. Sullinger might have a little goto post option in him eventually. Otherwise TRob's numbers are largely indistinguishbale from "just guys". NBA level players, but not stars. And more importantly, when you watch him play that's what you see.

Conley's post game comment: ''It's nice to get a relatively relaxing win like this one.''

You never want to hear the term "relaxing" after a 48 minute basketball game.

Markieff Morrs 13.7pts (.399 .347 .717) 8.2reb 1.9ast 1.2stl 1.2blk 2.1TO on 12.8FGA

Dejuan Blair 15.4pts (.556 .000 .547) 12.7reb 1.6ast 1.2stl 0.9blk 2.7TO on 11.9FGA (almost too good for this list)

This is the problem with people who totally disregard stats and "go with their gut" and are in awe of the "wow plays".
