Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Ok, 5 notes:

1) good game, we can play with good teams

2) every single game there has to be one guy who mysteriously gets played and played and played by Keith Smart despite lousy production or all logic. Tonight it was Marcus Thornton who capped a 2-13 shooting night with a selfish play on the game's final shot to finish us

3) BTW, pick and roll, pick and pop, whatever. Our guards are simply too selfish to run it for anybody but themselves and deserve a good hard slap. Late in the game it bit us and bit us hard, as first IT ran one with Cousins, got doubled, leaving Cuz wide open, refused to pass it, and got bailed out by a foul call as he was about to be trapped in the corner, and only hit 1 of 2. Then to finish the game Cuz sets the pick for Thornton, and Marcus, having the play drawn up for him, is of course 100% bound and determined to take that shot and be the hero while Cousins stands open 10 feet away from him, and so he doesn't even get a shot off as Gasol smothers the selfish right out of him and blocks the shot. Selfishness kills.

4) Meanwhile inconsistency as always rules for us, as our two best players from the last game (Reke and JT), were two of our worst this time out. Not only that, IT actually passed the ball this time.

5) Tonight I would like to announce the expansion of the Grading Consortium idea for the final few games of the season. For each game we are going to have prominent posters pass through as Guest Graders so that we can have a full 5 person Consortium every game out. If we all survive the BOG vote in a couple of weeks, its something I want to experiment with for next year. Tonight we'll be joined by hrdboild and Rainmaker, although they kind of got the dregs this time out, many dregs played a major role, so it kinda worked out.

Salmons ( F ) -- John started this one out looking lazy and disinterested -- letting defenders drive by him uncontested, camping out in the corner on offense. Twice he was the only defender on the fast break and didn't even attempt to contest. His only positive contributions of the quarter were a nice defensive play on Prince in the post and a credited steal when Marc Gasol passed the ball right to him and he heaved a full court hail mary to IT. Smart mercifully let Salmons ride the bench and think on his sins for the remainder of the half while the three guard lineup of Douglas, Fredette, and Thornton improbably led a 10 point turnaround. Came in to start the third and played all but the last 30 seconds of it. Looked active early, handling the ball a lot but without much success. Hit Cousins in the lane for a layup and finally got a tough layup to drop himself to complete the 1-4 shooting night. And that was it as he again watched a full quarter from the bench. He did have the 2 assists and should have had 2 more as the misses were gimmes. But the biggest impression I have of this one is that he repeatedly found himself in position to make plays defensively and chose instead to stand aside and watch. There's no reason why Salmons shouldn't be doing the same things out there that Toney Douglas is. It's primarily a matter of effort and Salmons does not have it right now. 0 rebounds in 20 minutes from the SF position means your head's not in the game, and that's what swings it from a D to an F for me. Better luck next time John! --Hrd

Thompson ( D+ ) -- Thompson had a pretty rough go of it this afternoon. His jumper was not on (0-4) and his rebounding (only 4 in 19 minutes) was definitely a step down from his recent production. The rebounding can largely be chalked up to the Memphis bigs, who were really muscling JT around. Things weren't helped by the officials, who made (in my opinion) three very bad foul calls on JT - the worst of them being an offensive foul in the lane when Randolph was mauling him. But despite JTs poor offensive game, his defense was pretty good. He only allowed 8 points on 10 shots, holding Randolph to 0-3 and Gasol to 0-1 and two free throws. Unfortunately he had two real fouls in addition to the three questionable ones and he left the game for the final fifteen minutes while Smart went smallball. So his D was good but he didn't really get anything else done and didn't play down the stretch. It's probably a bit much to ask for three "A"s in a rows, so I suppose it's not too shocking.--Capt.

Cousins ( B+ ) -- notice how even with the expansion to a full 5 graders this time, that I saavily mange to appoint to myself the only two starters to deliver halfway decent games? Saavy + experience for the win! And for the night, Boogie was the man for us. Now being the Kings not infrequently the team, the coaches, resident trolls and dimwits of all kinds forgot about that for spells. But in the end that was the way of things. And really it was from the very start of the game -- Cuz got off to the good start, basically the only King to do so, starting the game with a big dunk down the lane, hitting several jumpers, and scoring 11 of our first 16 points before picking up his 2nd foul just before the end of the quarter with the old Bibby face foul vs. Kobe -- this time it was Marc Gasol delivering the elbow to Cousins' face, in the wide open court, and getting the foul called on Cousins for it. Calls like that make you wonder what the hell, and I do mean what the hell, the refs are looking at. Returned to the game in the mid 2nd but really wasn't the centerpiece as Douglas, Jimmer, even Chuck Hayes were all contributing to one of those random Kings reserves blowups we get once in a blue moon. Unfortunately when he's not terribly involved in things Cuz has a tendency to do dumb things, as he did in picking up his 3rd foul on a dumb play trying a wraparound knockaway on Gasol 30 feet from the hoop. That meant he started the 3rd having to back off on defense and let Gasol/Zach do what they wanted, but on offense you could tell he wanted to take over and made several aggressive plays inside before again getting smacked in the face by a Grizzlies' elbow, and then a shoulder to boot. Unfortunately that damaged his calm, and he picked up back to back turnovers trying to do too much, the first of them after grabbing a d-board and then refusing to give it up, going full court until Gasol stopped the silliness at the rim. Nonetheless by the time he left the game again, here was this startling stat: Boogie was 7-12 from the field. All four other Kings starters were 4-23 combined. Yikes. Was ignored for a while after he returned to the game in the mid 4th, as we were smallballing, and on this team guards gotta be guards, which is to say exhibit their godgiven right to chuck up junk without reprecussions. But when we finally rediscovered him, he was big down the stretch scoring inside, knocking down two FTs, and hitting the jumper to put us up at the 45 second mark. Unfortunately when we went to the well one last time at the 20 second mark, Gasol blocked his shot from behind, and the Grizz went the other way, and on the final play of the game, there was no way Marcus (2-13FG) was going to give up that last shot to DeMarcus (9-15FG) unless you shot him, and maybe not even then. Hence we lose again. --Brick

Evans ( D ) -- Tough night for Tyreke. Nothing was falling, and at times, it because of poor decision making, and other times, or at least one time, by recieving a pass in a spot that was totally untendable. Such as his first opportunity of the game, when he was passed the ball with few seconds left on the shot clock right under the basket and surounded by four defenders. However, he did have a few open shots, and missed all of them. He did manage one basket, and that came off a miss by Cousins that he rebounded and put back in. His other three points came at the foul line, where he went 3 for 4. Tyreke just didn't seem to have that fire in the belly tonight, and in the second half, after missing a corner three, he hardly touched the ball and didn't take another shot another shot in the game. He did manage to take an outlet, and then get tied up by Tony Allen, who also won the jumpball. He went to the bench at the start of the 4th quarter, and returned with just over 5 minutes left in the 4th. In short, Tyreke had little impact on the game, unless you count his lack of impact as impact. Its a shame, because this is a night when his normal contribution would have probably won the game for us. --Baja

Thomas ( B- ) -- now last time out with IT I got semi-forced to give him a B grade despite deep discomfort with the way he played that game. 5'9" guys claiming to be PGs with 20-1 shot to assist ratios generally have a word associated with them: Losers. but 29pts is 29pts, and I felt compelled to give it a reasonable grade. And then we come to this game, and the situation is almost reversed. Much that was one dimensional and ridiculous last time eventually got rounded out this time. And if the numbers overstate that roundedness, and if things eventually began to swing selfish again as IT still threw up the 2nd most shots on the team, it was still a much better attempt at playing a complete game this time. Struggled for about 3/4 of this one on offense, as he just was not able to get around Conley, and even blew an open court layup after making a tough catch of a long outlet pass. But he was doing a better job of passing on the night, albeit on several occasions rather reluctantly after his own lane was cut off. Lost minutes in the second as Douglas really began to have his effect on defense and Jimmer came to life offensively. In fact did not hit his first shot (notably a catch and shoot three from the corner (i.e. good shot)) until the beginning of the 3rd. Followed that with a good drive and dumpoff to JT for the finish as he began to have more effect on the game. Had a big offensive rebound in the mid 3rd inside of Conley and got fouled, and had one of his better rebounding efforts overall. Nice job getting an open court steal to close the third and cut the lead back to 6. In the early 4th was working well with Douglas, but started to become more Isaiah oriented before being removed for Jimmer. When he returned in the 4th as part of various smallballing dumb lineups, was all IT all the time, and just pissed me off again in the final 2min as he ran a side pick and roll for himself as usual, had both guys go with him to trap him in the corner, and rather than passing it back to the now open Cousins, you know the way the play is designed to be run and is run by every smart basketball player on the planet, he tried to dribble out of it so he can shoot himself. It is fortunate I am not a coach. And down the stretch it was more overdribbling, although on one play he did finally, with half the team waving at him to move the ball, hit Cousins for the go ahead jumper with 45 seconds to go. Anyway, here's my diagnosis: maybe somebody said something to him, maybe he looked at the film and said damn dawg, whatever. But he seemed to start this one with a more PGy mentality...and then get gradually more full of himself as he went along until the end it was back to the same problems. Is what it is. Despite the 5-14 shooting though, overall I was more comfortable with this game than last. He did other things, for a while at least. --Brick

Hayes ( B ) -- Yeah, I know! He only scored 4 points, and how can he get a B while Tyreke who scored 5 pts gets a D. Well, Chuck impacted the game while he was in there. I'm actually amazed at how well Hayes plays defense at his height against 7 foot players. He is the immovable object on the court. And tonight, he became Mr. Shotblocker, with 2, count them, 2 blocked shots. My god, the world just turned upside down. When you add in 9 rebounds and 3 assists, he had a very good night, and was a major part of why the Kings had a chance to win this game at the end. One of his baskets was a putback of a JT miss, and the other one was a very nice move in the post to score. Two of Jimmer's baskets were a result of passes from Chuck. I have a lot of thoughts about Hayes that I'll go into another time. I have tremendous respect for what he does. He's the consumate professional that absolutely gets the most out of his talent. Well done Mr. Hayes!

Thornton ( F ) -- Thornton simply could not hit a shot this afternoon. He hit two threes in the second quarter and that was the sum total of his scoring. He ended up 2-8 on threes (including getting stuffed by Gasol to end the game) and 0-4 at the rim, so it's a bit curious how he earned 31 minutes. Still, smallball will not be denied and the funny thing is that defensively, outside of getting beat by Randolph in the post he wasn't really a liability on D when he was defending the SF. Daye didn't even attempt a shot against him, and Prince only went at Thornton three times - all in the post, resulting in one miss and two turnovers. That's not to say that Thornton had a stellar defensive game - he had two notably bad plays, one where Tony Wroten completely broke him down for a layup, and one where he simply took his eye off of Pondexter in the corner, who made the easy baseline cut for a dunk. Thornton just has a knack of not getting challenged often on defense when I'm watching despite what sure looks like a lazy stance. Anyhow, stopping Prince in the post three times is not enough to make up for the terrible shooting.--Capt.

Aldrich ( C+ ) -- Aldrich didn't score out there, missing a layup, having a dunk attempt blocked, and clanking a deep hook shot. With only two rebounds in 15 minutes, he just did not get it done on the glass. The only things he brought to the game were defense and a couple of nice screens. He was causing the Grizzlies a lot of trouble in the paint, blocking two shots and only allowing 7 points on 9 shot attempts. At the end of the third quarter he got low and challenged Mike Conley's drive, knocking the ball loose so that he didn't get a shot off. Overall he was a big part of keeping us in the game by not giving the Grizz easy shots, but a little bit of offense and rebounding would have been nice to see. --Capt.

Douglas ( B+ ) -- This was arguably Tony's best all-around game as a member of the Kings. When he entered the game we were down 32-24 as Memphis had all the momentum and it was largely his defense and overall activity level which sparked the team and led us to dominate the second quarter. He was disruptive, pressured the ball, got in passing lanes and made life difficult for Conley who scored only 2 points against Tony in the period(the Douglas and Jimmer pairing actually held Conley to 4 points in the 2nd, while he put up 21 in the other three periods combined). Douglas closed the first half very strong where in the final few possessions he pressured Conley in the backcourt almost forcing a turnover, then on the ensuing possession picked off a Gasol pass and took it in for two at the other end, then stole the Memphis inbounds pass with 4 secs to go and spoon fed Marcus for a layup which he blew at the halftime buzzer. Tony's all around game came to fruition in the 4th quarter. While the box score only shows two assists, he had 4-5 passes which easily could have ended as assists including a nifty bounce pass through traffic to Cole who missed the dunk and a nice transition pass over the top again to Cole who again missed an easy one at the rim. Hit a couple timely threes but it was his defense which really stood out. Douglas broke up a Memphis fast break with a steal, later picked Conley's pocket at halfcourt resulting in a Jimmer corner three, then pressured Conley into throwing the ball to the cutie sitting next Grant and Jerry in the first row. The only poor play which stuck out from Tony on the night was when he forced the issue while driving into a crowd late in the 4th and was called for a charge. But Tony showed his value tonight as a defensive minded role player who was extremely active all night on that end, didn't force the issue on offense yet was a threat and had to be accounted for.--Rain

Stats: 15min 13pts (3-7, 2-4, 5-6) 1reb 0ast 0stl 0blk 4TO
Fredette ( C+ ) -- Jimmer did most of his damage in the 2nd quarter where along with Douglas and Marcus they sparked our offense and turned the game around going into halftime. Defensively, other than getting caught guarding Conley in the open court and getting blown by he held his own. Did a pretty good job moving his feet and closing out on 3pt shooters. Offensively however it was a mixed bag. Started by hitting a transition three, well taken with his feet set behind a screen and earning a trip to the line after iso'ing and drawing a foul on Tony Allen, one of the best perimeter defenders in the league. Later in the 2nd had a sequence where he looked like IT/Reke splitting the double team off the dribble up top and hitting Douglas for an open three he missed, then got the offensive rebound, iso'd again against Tony Allen and earned another trip to the line after getting Allen to bite on a hard pump fake. A mistake Jimmer made which is something he's struggled with early in his career is he jumped in the air without having a clear shot or someone to pass to and threw the ball out of bounds. After half however could not produce near the same impact and his main contribution was hitting a corner three off a Douglas halfcourt steal. I wavered between giving Jimmer a B- and a C+ as he along with Douglas changed the complexion of the game in the 2nd quarter, hit his one open shot in the 4th and overall played a relatively smart game and wasn't a defensive liability. What brought the grade down into the C range for me was Jimmer has 1 reb, 0 assists and 0 steals along with being sloppy on the ball as he had four turnovers on the night. Has to find a way to impact the game in other areas. But a good effort by Jimmer. --Rain

Memphis seems ok with only scoring 90 points and winning...just sayin'.

start Toney Douglas @SG seriously just get rid of Salmons hes a waste of space out there, I don't care if Reke has to play SF, the team is better with Douglas on the floor and Salmons of it.

I thought Toney D was the player of the game for us, that defense and the shot making was something else.

id rather he start over Nate Robinson 2.0.

but him over Salmons is still better than Salmons on the floor

As for the poll. i voted Salmons. he continues to bring us nothing but clanked shots, and still takes many minutes from people who SHOULD be playing big minutes.

hell, not just tonight, he's been stinky poopyhead of the month!

Didn't see the game, and won't view any games until I know for sure the team is staying but what a joke of a line from Evans... Is it too much to expect our "top tier" players to have some semblance of consistency and just be solidly good players (not stars ofcourse)

...3) BTW, pick and roll, pick and pop, whatever. Selfishness kills...

Truer words may have never been spoken. And what causes the selfishness? Blatant and rampant utter stupidity on the part of the coach.

If you do not watch the game, you shouldn't even attempt to comment based on the stats. To paraphrase your own words, is it too much to expect our posters to actually watch the games before they make accusatory statements?

I don't think Tyreke was as bad in this one as the stat line indicates. He was aggressive early, the shots just weren't dropping for him. Then he got the typical Smart freeze-out in the second -- though somewhat understandable this time because our bench played us back into the game. Douglas gets most of the credit though and I think we might have been able to build a lead had Tyreke replaced either Thornton or Jimmer midway through the quarter. In the third Salmons and IT were dominating the ball and in the fourth he mostly rode the bench again. The pattern with him this season is that he needs to get into a rhythm early and see that his shots are dropping and that just didn't happen tonight as Douglas was so effective in his limited minutes that Smart mistakenly thought his small-ball strategy was the difference maker and largely forgot about Tyreke and Demarcus. Unfortunately the Grizzlies didn't play their best ball and got away with a win on our home court anyway. Salmons and Thompson were not effective in any way out there, Thornton blew a really good chance to win at the end, and Tyreke was mostly just an after thought. Personally I'll criticize Evans when he makes dumb mistakes but the lack of assertiveness thing, well you could build a case that Smart has conditioned it out of him by now.

My last game in the seats this season. Exciting game. Tough loss. In those last few seconds we might have done better with a lineup of Cuz, JT, Outlaw, Tyreke and Aldrich. By that time I was well sick of our 1s, 2s and 3s each being defended by taller, 3 inches or more - it was tough to get a decent shot off. Aldrich doesn't shoot very well but at least he would have got one off.

I'm looking forward to next year and hope a little more money is available to acquire one or two key players.

Mostly happy with tonights game. Mostly.

They mostly come at night. Mostly.

Anyways...Reke for poopyhead of the night. Gotta hold the guy to a higher standard. Salmons is almost always a poopyhead (and this is coming from one of his rare fans during his first tenure with us), Thornton stinking doesnt surprise me in the least either, and JT was due for a stinker...We know how he is.

Disappointing, but hard fought.... Another one for the "games we could have won if we had a coach with an IQ higher than the number of letters in his name" list.

Truer words may have never been spoken. And what causes the selfishness? Blatant and rampant utter stupidity on the part of the coach.

Certainly Smart isn't giving any meaningful direction to his guards, especially IT. I wouldn't be surprised if he is encouraging IT to shoot. I am going to uncharacteristically present a non-basketball defense. IT's career in the NBA is far from guaranteed. Without looking, I think his contract has one more year on it and it is team's option. Whether that is right ot wrong, IT is more likely to stay in the NBA if he scores than if he assists. That's the nature of the NBA and in particular who is going to be impressed by a 5'9" or 5'10" PG whose defense is almost non-existent who piles up assists. It could easily be said that any short person could pile up assists. IT may be trying to score and show off his offensive skills to stay in the league and my guess is that the 2nd rate guard, Smart, is encouraging him. It's not good basketball but it may be IT's career that's at stake.

IT is a great offensive threat and I would hope that he if he gets a contract and calms down, he will look for assists far more often than he does.

I mean really, who better is there to give the ball on a roll to the rim than Cuz?

Just a thought.

Douglas, IT and Cousins. Those were the impact players. Nobody else. Cousins could have had more of an impact in the first half, but he kept throwing it to the other team. He has more TOs than assists in the average game. Not good. It's those non-forced TOs that offset the good plays. You wonder why he can't see the floor. He seems to have the potential, but the concentration sure isn't there on an every game basis. It was nice to see a Jimmer sighting just to know he's still alive.

Anyone remember the guy we drafted in 2011? The shotblocking center who we promptly traded?

Why the hell is Douglas not in our starting lineup? He passes when he needs to, scores when he doesn't, defends like a monster and is generally better than the starting PG we currently, feature, who stole Reke's heart and makes him look heartless.

If your just judging the results, which is what I have to do when grading, its easy to make Tyreke the whipping boy. But in the second half, he went a little over 7 minutes without taking a shot, and only touched the ball twice. Its extremely difficult to make up for a poor shooting 1st half, if you not involved in the offense in any way in the second half, and not by choice. I'm not making excuses for him. These are the times when he needs to demand the ball. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be in his natural make up.

As a side note, the Kings stink when they're forced to play in a halfcourt offense. The guards become selfish, dribble around for 22 seconds of the shotclock, and then either throw up a wild shot, don't get a shot off, or, pass the ball to someone else with one tick left on the clock. On the last play of the game, Thornton came off a pick set by Cousins, and instead of kicking the ball to Cuz, who was open at around 14 feet from the basket, he tried to play hero against the 7 foot Gasol and lost. Thornton has little or no court vision. In an earlier sequence, he drove into the key and passed the ball to Douglas, who was immediately closed out, when he had Jimmer wide open on the other side with no one within 15 feet of him.

I believe the Kings took around 22 three point shots in the game, and made 7. That tells me everything I need to know about our offense. Its guard driven, when that many shots are three's. This team desperately needs a competent PG. IT is very good in an uptempo game, but he struggles big time in a halfcourt game, especially when he's being guarded by someone taller, and just as quick as he is. The reason is, he has one mentality. To prove he can do it, despite the fact, the results show he can't. The key to success in any endeavor is know what your limitations are, and live within them. Sometimes its better to be crafty, than it is to be quick. I'm sure he'll learn that at some point.

Ahhhh, maybe you were watching film of another game by mistake. Cousins only had 1 turnover in the game last night.. While I do agree with your analysis in general, it doesn't apply to last nights game.

I'll have to go back and watch the first half.

The Kings played well enough to win with one big if. If they could stop the Grizzlies from having lay-up drills against them. Are the Kings feet stuck to the floor? Do they need flubber on their shoes? Slow to react is an understatement.

Games like these are very encouraging. It shows we got talent to hang with some of the best in the game. We're just fighting too many uphill battles at this point; stupid coach, not enough defense in general, and a lack of an offensive system. Tough, hard-nosed playoff teams aren't going to let us run them into the ground. We need an offensive structure. The good news is we are a new coach, a few veterans, and a Tony Allen-esq wing away from being a playoff contender.

It's also nice to see Chuck have a great game. He's just another guy who's been horribly mismanaged by Smart. A good coach would find a way to utilize his defense and b-ball IQ.

with as much as Tyreke is jerked around by Keith Smart, its amazing he still finds the will to even play the games.

for example, since you didnt see the game, its worth noting that Keith Smart used Tyreke at the Power Forward position in the 4th quarter, then benched him for Chuck Hayes

He didn't use him at the 4. He used a 4 guard line up......that isn't the same thing.
