Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Well, I really wanted to win this one, but we never quite got over the hump. And watching it you could just see the accumuation of paper cuts that did it. Some big cuts -- we are one of the worst defensive teams in the league just as we have been ever since the Maloofs fired Rick Adelman for not coaching defense 7 years ago, lol (here's hoping for a radical readjustemnt of that philosophy under the next regime). And as usual no good game goes unpunished in Coach "Smart's" brilliant substitution scheme. If I were on the team I would chuck up a terrible brick not quite everytime I touched the ball, but let's say 4 out of 5 times, and then make every 5th one (the 1 you make confuses poor Coach Smart and he has to wait 5 more minutes to see if it might happen again), and I could virtually guarantee msyelf 48min of playing time over the poor schlub behind me trying to play a team game. But also just little things. The wrong turnover at the wrong time. A forced shot just when you almost were ready to come back. An unwise pass. A soft foul. A missed rebound. Tonight Tyreke, who played a great game otherwise, missed 4 FTs etc. We were in this game. We had our main guys playing pretty strong games, but the Grizzlies are pros and we are a young team that just finds ways to kill ourselves. Not big dramatic ways this time. Just an accumulation of little errors that stopped us from ever really going on a big run and which all add up to a loss.

For your entertainmnet:
We've seen that kind of thing during his summer scrimmages, but the defender there was none other than Tony Allen, as in First Team All Defense at SG the last two years Tony Allen.

Salmons ( D- ) -- the sort of game that will make you question yourself for questioning the Salmons oversized role last time out. Was back to the roleplayer this time out, unfortunately his role was being bad and racking up giftwrapped Smart minutes anyway. And the bad was pretty much on both ends this time, as this time Tony Allen was largely looking silly good against us against John while Reke was often on Prince. Showed good defensive hustle in the early going, but just never looked quick enough to stay in front of Allen, who might be an All Star if he played all 82 games against us. Of course compounded it on the other end of the court where he stepped back into the shadows...and stumbled around in the dark and fell down the steps. Missed all of his kickout threes and did not finally hit his first, and only, jumper until late in the 3rd. Highlight of the night was a solitary play where he did set up Reke nicely on a backcut on the semi-break, but that was about it. Still managed to rack up more minutes than Jason, who scored 15pts on 7-11 shooting, and only 1 minute less than Reke, who scored 20pts on 10-17 shooting, because, well, he is John Salmons, and we love him. --Brick

Thompson ( B+ ) -- Thompson's scoring was very nice once again tonight, with JT going 7-10 before missing a shot in the lane during garbage time. Six of his seven hits were layups, tip-ins, or dunks, including a layup and a dunk on two consecutive transition plays to close out the first half. He didn't have any assists but he did make one very nice pass from the perimeter to Tyreke in the low post where he eventually earned foul shots (missed, but that's not JT's fault). Defensively, I liked his work quite a bit tonight. In the first half he forced three misses on help, helped force a 24-second violation, and even (apparently) convinced the refs to call a travel. In the second half, nobody even scored on him, and he forced Gasol into two missed jumpers. One of those was not only a particularly ugly example of a force, but Thompson grabbed the board and shot it up court for a Tyreke layup that brought us within one. Unfortunately, that was our closest approach and perhaps more unfortunately, Smart benched him for a 13-minute stretch at the end of the third and most of the fourth when we really could have used him on the floor - simply because of four fouls. JT's only real downside tonight was his low total of 6 rebounds - not terrible for 28 minutes of work but not great, and worse when you realize that two of those were in the last minute or so of garbage time. --Capt.

Cousins ( A- ) -- strong game for DeMarcus missing only bigger rebounding numbers, although you did not reallly feel him missing too many he should have got. Was teaming with Reke in the early going to give us an early lead, and looked like he had finally figured out the Marc Gasol connundrum, mixing in jumpers and drive attempts in pretty comfortable combination making the most of his mobility advantage in the matchup. But eventually got in foul trouble again on an unnecessary foul with little chance of it being anything else trying to defend on the break. Or more likely just trying to work out his frustrations. So we lost him, a few minutes later it was important for Smart to get Reke his nightly half hour of first half rest, and we relinquished the lead and never really regained control of the game therafter. When he returned for the later stages of the half the Grizzlies began guarding him with Zach Randolph, and things took a decidedly chippee turn as the two brahma bulls were really banging bodies out there, with Cuz probably trying too hard to serve notice to Randolph and mixing erratic jumpers with very aggressive drives getting right on the rim. Wasn't just bull in china shopping though, as was keeping his head up for passing opportunuities, and made several. Some impatience and forcing of shots in the late third as he again got more determined to win the mano a mano with Zach, but was moving very well this game, racking up numerous steals and one going full court all on his own as the Grizzlies just never stopped ball or seemed to consider it a possibility a 270lb center was going to go coast to coast on them. On one play frustrated Gasol enough after he finished through him for the +1 that Gasol picked up a technical. Looked good after returning in the 4th. Got to the hoop repeatedly and then just reached out and swiped the ball from Gasol up top and galloped the other way. Went back and forth, forth and back between B+ and A- on this grade, but should be noted that many/most of Gasol's numbers came againt JT and Chuck, while Cuz was often on Zach, so it let me squeeze this upward despite the middling board total. --Brick

Evans ( A- ) -- This was a night that Tyreke came to play. It wasn't a perfect night, but it came close. He only had 3 assists, but not for lack of trying. I know of at least 3 other passes that should have ended up assists, one to Hayes right under the basket, that were missed. He started the night by blowing right past Prince down the right baseline and laying it in. Prince tried to repay him at the other end, and Tyreke had none of it. Once again, almost all of Tyreke's points came at the basket, as he had trouble getting his long range shot to fall. He did hit a nice 16 footer coming off a screen at the left elbow. Both his assists in the first half were passes in traffic to JT under the basket. He also had a beautiful circus shot where he did a spin move past two defenders and threw up a shot high off the glass that went in. The second half was more of the same, but he was a little less effective. He missed two three's to start, but followed with a beautiful reverse layup on a nice pass from Salmons. The downside of the night was missing all his freethrows, 4 in total, with 2 coming at a point when we really needed them. But all in all, it was a very good night for Tyreke, who also added 7 rebounds, and zero turnovers. --Baja

Thomas ( C ) -- not able to beat Conley with quickness early, and missed 3 threes on kickouts as he was generally ineffective. Finally got his first shot to drop on a jumper over Prince on a switch. Still not terribly effective later in the half, but was able to draw several fouls of a questionable nature before the break, including one that critically sent Conley to the bench with 3 fouls. Got more offensively aggressive in the early third, which was both a good and a bad thing as the mixed results indicated. When Conley went to the bench, was able to really pester and harass Bayless as a ballhandler, but maybe was making it if anything too personal, as there was something punkish about it and IT seemed to be forgetting about the team game to invent a grudge match. With Cousins involved in a similar pissing contest with Randolph at the time, we were not exactly functioning like a smoothly oiled machine. When Brooks' minutes carried over with the starters returning in the 4th and he again showed the ability to step back and let the main guys be the main guys, thought it was probably a decent decision for the offense that he was just left in to run things the rest of the way while IT watched. --Brick

Thornton ( C- ) -- I suspose that some of you might think my grade is a bit harsh, but I'm not a big believer in one on one basketball, and tonight, once again, Marcus couldn't help himself. Yes, he did score 15 points, but he did it on 4 of 12 shooting, which by my calulations, is 33%. Yes, everyone can have a bad night shooting, but Marcus has been having quite a few this year. He started the night by missing an open three from the left corner. He followed that by driving past Tony Allen to the basket, missed, but was fouled, and made both freethrows. A bit later, he came off a screen, and badly missed a 15 foot fallaway. From this point on, he started forcing shots, overdribbling, and seldom passing the ball once he had it. He did have a few nice plays, one a backdoor cut on a pass from Brooks. But he had zero assists, and 1 rebound, to go with 2 turnovers. Marcus looks lost to me. Like he's trying to figure out how to do what he does, but in the flow of the game. It appears that he's either very hot, or very cold. --Baja

Hayes ( C- ) -- Chuck needs to remember that he's not an offensive player, because he made two ugly mistakes in this one during his second stint - the first a travel trying to make a post move and the other a very low-percentage half-hook. He was pretty effective setting screens and passing today (including a very nice pass from the high post to Brooks for a layup and grabbing a loose ball and hitting MT23 for a 3) so I don't know what he was thinking trying to create his own offense. His rebounding was effective in the first half (4) but completely ineffective when we could have used it in the second half (0). Defensively, he did his standard job, including one play in the third where he forced Randolph into taking a retarded jumper at the end of the shot clock. He also forced Gasol into a very tough fadeaway in the fourth, but Gasol hit it. A pretty average game, but he gets knocked down a notch for trying to be an offensive hero.

Brooks ( B- ) -- had a strong stretch of play in his first half stint, including a nice steal in the backcourt and following assist to Thornton for a three. Woke him up and he followed with two quick scores, the second one on a nifty pass from Hayes and then delivered a neat needlethreading bounce pass of his own to a slashing Thornton. And this time out the strong play actually resulted in second half minutes (Smart's always interesting substitution patterns had Jimmer mysteriously replace Brooks after half last game despite an effective first half stint). Of course when he returned in the second half, Brooks had to be shaky in his opening minutes trying to run the reserves, because otherwise there wouldn't be any intrigue. Turned it over, almost did a second time, had to throw up an off balance prayer against the shotclock etc. But was left in when Reke and JT and Cuz all returned, and out there with the starters his game stabilized and he was steady at PG down the stretch, and even contributed with a really quick move to get to the hoop and cut the lead back to 8 at the 3:20 mark. Chopping off half a grade though for the defense, where he showed no particular ability to stay in front of Conley as the low scoring Grizz of course became high scoring with us in town. --Brick

Garcia ( INC ) -- To be honest, I'm just being kind here. He did play 14 minutes, and he probably deserves a grade. My problem is, I had an entire page of notes on Tyreke. I had 3/4's of a page on Thornton, and I had three liines on Cisco. How the hell do you grade that. Its like he was in the game, but invisible. He started off the game and the 2nd quarter by hitting a three. The only other two things of note he did, were a badly missed three with the clock running down, and a terrible inbound pass that was picked off. He did have 2 boards and 1 assist. And once again, my eyes saw him block a shot, but apparently the offical scorer didn't. --Baja

Robinson ( D ) -- It was yet another night where TRob's hands problem was evident - he dropped a pass for a layup out of bounds and was unable to corral an offensive rebound down the stretch and fumbled that out of bounds too. On top of that, he went 1-6 from the floor and several of those were not good shots - a block in the lane, a missed tip, a missed putback, and a missed layup. The especially galling ones are the putbacks, because he's so effective at getting offensive rebounds and then he just throws them away by putting them back up at the basket. On the bright side, he did actually kick out his first offensive rebound of the night to MT23 for a triple, and I'd love to see him do that, say, every time. His defense was pretty aggressive as has been his par for the course lately, actively fronting bigger players and getting pretty good results. During his second stint he mostly guarded Randolph, who didn't even get one shot against him (though he did foul Conley twice, once on an offensive rebound and once unnecessarily on a perimeter switch). During his first stint, on the other hand, when he was playing behind his man Davis scored on him twice (once on a drive) and Gasol hit a jumper over him. --Capt.

Good effort imo on the road, we need to get some help @SF and a couple shooters who can defend there spots, The Gasol vs JT match up was a not a good one we needed Cousins vs Gasol when we were defending them. Some silly turnovers but again on the road against a team thats great on D not a bad effort.

Gasol/ZBO frontcourt to much for us right now. We either need a front court to match their pts or a defensive big to guard Gasol out 10-15 ft out from the basket.

people really do tend to forget how exceptional tyreke can be at getting to the rim when the floor is spread adequately...

If this team was built properly around the talents of Tyreke Evans and Demarcus Cousins, we would see that EVERY game. So nasty.

Even the coach. How difficult would it be to set up a play called, let's see, Tyreke, and just hand him the ball at the three point line. Everyone else clear out. That's essentially what was done his entire rookie year and even when people knew exactly what was going to happen, it took a year to start to be able to stop it. Mix it into a few other plays so it wasn't predictable when he was going to do it and we'd have a replay of what he did tonight.

What is so absolutely absurd about our coach as he has one of the best seats in the house and he got to watch what Tyreke did in the 1st quarter. 10 points. So then what happens? Smart sits him down until 4 minutes are left in the 2nd quarter. Grant says that at that point Tyreke seemed to have lost his aggressiveness as if the long sit had nothing to do with it.

It's not like Smart is against big minutes. Early in the year, JT of all people was regularly given minutes in the high 30's and in at least one game played 40 minutes. We also have seen him play Cuz a lot of minutes. So why not Tyreke? Probably because he feels constrained to two things: #1) he has to play MT a bunch of minutes no matter what and #2) he plays units, the starters and the bench. Does he not think that these guys are clever enough to mix and match depending on the circumstances? Doesn't he think 4 bench guys could adjust to having Tyreke be the 5th man? Does he think he will hurt MT'a feelings if he doesn't get a lot of minutes. MT, BTW, was having an off day. Is it so unique to play a guy, especially one of your stars, extended minutes when he is hot. Tyreke played 21 minutes. He could have played 40. In that 40 minutes, he might not have lost his aggressiveness, Grant, and gone for 40. Who knows but we will never find out. Is there a rule that no King should be humiliated if another is hot and takes his minutes.

What was he doing as an assistant in the NBA? Jotting down stats? Didn't he try to learn how to be an NBA coach?

I am flabbergasted as I like people to make sense even if I think they are wrong. In some ways, it is what I did my entire professional life. I swear I can make no sense of Smart. Imagine what it must feel like to be a player.

Will JJ see any more minutes in a Kings uni? Is next game Jimmer's turn? We know the answer to this. I will be incredibly angry if the Kings don't stay here and this is what we had to tolerate in the final year. It's as if we and the players are being punished for some as yet unnamed crime. I sure as heck feel like I am being punished. We pay money to watch this. I cannot get my head around owners who think that fans need to put up wth this although it is becoming clear that some very rich people are totally unable to understand what the rest of us go through.

Agent23, of course we would see it whether some people cannot accept reality or not. We have two unique athletes and one has the biggest reputation as being a problem child and the other has been forgotten.

All I can say is this: at the start of the broadcast, most teams would have a text box showing their coach's name and win record, or something along those lines. For example, Greg Popovich - however many time COY, W-L, career winning %. You get the idea. Against the Rockets? or one of the recent games, ours read "Keith Smart - hit game winner NCAA blablabla 1987". With credentials that astounding can we really question his coaching?

so so annoying that Reke doesn't handle the ball more.

he does and racks up quick points and great open looks early on then there was a big stretch where he hardly touched the ball at all.

haven't forgotten about his amazing ability. we had lots of players to space the floor his first year. spencer hawes basically a 3 pt shooting center..

Hey, he's not the only one on the floor, other guys would feel left out...

Smart is a crazymaker. I'll leave it at that.

Too bad about the Kings probably not trading anybody because of the impending sale. Thornton has got to go. The only reason for playing him tonight would be to augment his trade value, but that seems highly unlikely.

Memphis is a very good team. And they have a very good coach, who doesn't get enough credit.

This team reminds me of the niners the year before harbaugh took over, so much talent that they should be performing better than they are yet the coach keeps handicaping them by misusing them or not putting them in situations to suceed. We may not get as far as the niners did when they finally got a real coach but it sure seems like this team is only a coach and maybe a piece or 2 away from at least contending strongly for a playoff spot.

Lionel Hollins is an excellent coach! Its only because they don't have one of the NBA's "darlings" on the their team that he doesn't get his due for being a top tier coach.

ive kind of used that reference before too. i said i think with new coaching this team could change overnight much like the Niners did when Harbaugh took over
