I'm glad someone else caught this. The announcers brushed upon it in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs. Beno'd defense was the entire offense for the Clips. They scored at will when they went at Beno. His defense is HORRIBLE! He allowed his man to get bye him every time down the floor, causing the entire Kings defese to overcompensate and shift to defend Beno's man. OUr bigs were getting fouls on Beno's man. Beno couldn't guard anyone on defense. Your defense is only as good as your weakest link. BENO is that weak link. You can see when he is scoring, he helps the team. BUT when he is not scoring, Beno is a detriment to the team. In comes Jeter (pronounced Jet-UR) and the whole scene changed.
All of a sudden, Pooh was keeping the PG in front of him and playing defense. All of a sudden their offense immediately slowed down to a crawl. They were no longer getting free drives to the hoop. It was like night and day. I hope that Westphal learned a very valuable lesson on the court last night. I hope he learned that Pooh Jeter can play better defense than Beno (not saying much really as Beno plays NO defense...), and that Jetter can also give you some offense if the ball movement is occuring. I am sad to say that PW didn't acknowledge that Beno was hurting them until it was too late, and that cost the Kings the game. If it was known that Beno was going to play horribly, Jeter might have gotten more minutes. There is no one else on the bench who can play either guard position worth a crap. A veteran PG or SG would look very helpful in trying to guard other teams on a nightly basis. Beno is either struggling mightly on defense, or is too lazy to play good defense. I think the reason that Papavich in San Antonio gave up on him is because of his defense. He HAS to play both ends of the floor if he is a starter! I say more time for Pooh and much less for Beno U_rich (no "D") .
This has a lot to do with the lack of money spent to bring in a vet PG on a one year offer and have someone as a real backup to Tyreke. Tyreke and Beno both don't look healthy, so having a vet PG now would have been ideal. As it is, the Kings have not spent the money even short term to keep the Kings competitive. In fact, sticking with Beno this season is an admission of failure by the Kings front office and coaches. You cant keep running Beno out their every game to start knowing the guy plays lousy defense. Beno is just not a starter. Maybe if the Kings were to acquire another PG in a trade or perhaps as a free agent, they would become better defensively and be more competitive in games. A one year contract would not hamstring the owners. But the owners need to be committed to wining. Part of a commitment to wining is the willingness to spend money. The Maloofs haven't shown any desire to field a winning team. Maybe when the CBA is signed the Kings will become more interested in putting a winning product on the court.

I agree with this statement, which pretty much just regurgitates what many other people in this thread have been saying: the problem isn't our 3 point shooters, it's the position they are in when they shoot it.
Over the past month (since someone first brought this theory up) I have been watching our shooters and the passes they are receiving. They are pathetic. A substantial portion of the passes are out of reach, or the player has to reposition himself to step up and shoot. This isn't even considering the passes that are prefaced by 20 seconds worth of dribbiling and are therefore incredibly rushed, resulting in a hurried shot as the shot clock expires.
There are people on this team that can shoot the 3. Until the root cause is fixed we could bring in Ray Allen at his prime and he would still suffer a significant reduction in fg% with the way our offense runs. We need to fix the root problem and avoid the bandages.

Does anybody else go nuts when they see Reke falling away on a jumper? I know he's aware of it and has been told over and over, but he still does it on over half of his jumpers. Even uncontested, he's falling away. I just don't get it. STOP FALLING AWAY ON YOUR JUMPER REKE!

I've been going nuts since preseason on that very point. I'm surprised I can put together a sentence I've gone nuts over it so much. He and Garcia appear to have practiced the Las Vegas High Kick shooting form during the offseason. Instead of improving their shooting form, they have worsened their shooting form, or at the very least cemented a poor shooting form, by continuing to practice the wrong thing. Now, they have to unlearn what they have so assiduously learned during the off-season. It looks like Tyreke doesn't have as much of the kick, but he sure has enough of the residual fall-away to continually come up short. Garcia makes me want to scream. Here you are - a veteran - and you come into camp with that shooting form? That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I seriously think I won't be able to watch Kings games next year if I see this idiocy repeated. If these guys can't even practice right, then what's the point?
I see things as you do. It has been, is, and will be hard to watch sometimes but that is the price for having such young, inexperienced group. Some might not make it big but I think some will. I expect it to get better, as it already has, and we will get some wins and lose some tough ones. I go to the game tomorrow night against the Wizards. I really looking forward to it. I've seen some doooooozzies so far. And so far I haven't brought them much luck. Be different tomorrow night. Don't remind me I said this later.I don’t know, maybe I don't see it like everybody else, but I like the guys that we have and yeah they do need to grow/become more consistent/improve/etc. but I like the potential that I see in them and I love when I see them clicking on all cylinders.
Good post. Rough edges and dealing with ordinary defensive pressure as well as other things lead to despiration too soon. All this leads to bad plays, bad shots, bad passes, bad positioning on the floor. Confidence and calmness should grow and eventually improve many of our problems. Guys that make these bad passes, shots, moves, dribbles are capable of doing it much better. It's just a tough road getting there. Also a little more concentration by the individual players on doing what will improve team play is called for across the board. It's coming, it's just slow.

Point of order:
Technically, it is an 80's song, but it is NOT an 80's One Hit Wonder.
A song has to be significantly popular in the US during the 80's to qualify as an 80's One Hit Wonder, and this song wasn't popular in the US until Benny & Joon, in 1993.
Good classic selections on the other 80's Fun Songs, but most of these aren't One Hit Wonders, of course.

Lebron's still falling away on the jumper seven years in the league - it will never go away. One can just improve the percentage.
Not true when you look at individual stats -- we're worst at three point %, but not worst in the other offemsive categories.
However, we are the only team that is among the 4 worst in all offensive categories -- three point %, FT %, FG %, and points. Also 2nd worst for point differential. I'd therefore argue that you're right.

The problem is that we don't have a team. This team has no identity. So it's hard to build off nothing. Imo, they should bring in a good name player or two and go from there. The team right now is not even up to rebuilding mode standards. When you rebuild, you have to have a direction. The Kings have no direction.
I think we have a very clear direction as far as the roster goes. We have a very balanced roster, with Tyreke and Cousins as the inside-outside #1 and #2 options, and solid roleplayers around them in Dally, Greene, Omri, JT, Beno, Cisco, etc. The problem is that there is no direction in the way this team is being coached. There are no coherent plays, no offensive or defensive strategy. Everything is about reacting to what the other team does, resulting in the opponents knowing what's going to happen on the court while our players are completely clueless. From the way the coach has been using this roster, you wouldn't know that we have such a balanced one. An outsider might think we're short on SFs when they see JT, Landry, or Tyreke at that spot. They might also think we lack size and inside presence when our starting PF is a 6"7' dude who can't defend or rebound. Said outsider might not realize that our average age would barely allow the players to legally drink alcohol, seeing how we NEVER run on offense or apply pressure on our opponents on defense. We have all the tools, but it seems like our coach is in favor of using a hammer to knit a sweater.

I watched the 4th quarter of this game again last night and I was impressed by the play of Pooh, Casspi and Cousins. The Kings are going to turn the corner soon!
