Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
let+the+fugly+begin.jpg

That was just aggravating to watch. This is the second time this season at least that this team has come off of a potential momentum shifting win that might have shifted fan attitudes and just squelched it with an ugly game.

Changed my mind on the theme., This was ugly, and I am a little late getting started here. So I hereby declare this game was too ugly to earn a theme.

Official Boxscore

Casspi ( C- ) -- this was an odd game, was ineffective as everybody else, but unlike the other guys who were just brick brick briccking, Omri just never seemed to get the ball in scoring position. I could go back to watch it again to see if he was just being chased off hsi spots, or had tired legs and wasn't getting to his spots, or was getting to his spots but was not geting the ball (although I don't remember much of that)....but I have no intention of watching any part of this fugliness ever again. Got into quick foul trouble along with the other 24 guys involved in this game, and was having problems wiht Wallace's quickness all game lone.. As a SG in the late 2nd caused a few problems, posting up little Augustin, drawing a foul. Kept getting beat by Wallace off the dribble into the third, and somehow, someway he has got to figure out how to become a better defender. Like last night in Portland, got his entire burst of offense -- in this case a big ole 2 hoops -- on a quick burst in the third as Reke found him on back to back plays for a cut and a leakout. Missed the threes he got. So basically not a contributor on offense or defense, which leaves the glass. And there at least he gave us a little something, tying for the team lead with 8.

Thompson ( B- ) -- fugly in the early going but began to get hustle and effort boards inside as the 2nd quarter went along, and in this ugly affair, was actually our most productive statline in the first half wiht something like 7pts 4rebs. Got a three point play on one end in the early third, but made a defensive error and left Najera open to hit a three on us the other way that instantly negated it. Showing his normal lack of touch around the rim, but also his normal peristence going over the Bobcats to collect his misses and mop them up. When he was at center got pushed around on the glass by Kwame however. Sloppy unsmart play late in the game after coming back for Cousins. Forced a bad pass to Daly in the post, missed a short little flip, slammed a jumpball too hard for Tyreke to catch up to etc. Better than most of what we had going tonight, but that's not to say particularly good.

Cousins ( D ) -- in the past two nights DeMarcus has played a grand total of 35 minutes, and has picked up 11 fouls in those minutes. Which would be a tremednous, and tremendously ill timed step backward, but I just can't blame him that much for this one. These refs were completely ridiculous. I hope they went home last night to find out that their wives had left them. For their brothers. And taken the dogs. Think the refs were in DeMarcus's head fromt he beginning as as he looked unfocused and sloppy in his moves right from the get go here. But again, I consider even acknowledging that there are refs -- whether it be through flopping/cheating or through miserable whining and complaining to be mentally weak and pathetic, and yet this was so bad that I actualy could not realy blame DeMarcus. The way the game was being called how could he or anybody else play wihtout one eye over their shoulder waiting for a random whistle for accidentally sweating on some guy. Had a couple of little good moments, including a nice outlet pass over the top of 3 Bobcats to a streaking Reke, and a nice looking Duncanesque banker high off the glass from the side that it would not surprise me to see him develop -- he's got that kind of natural talent. But was not on the boards and looked tentative agiant a team with nobody really to stop him. He was getting pushed aroudn on the glass again, and while DeMarcus is very strong, this is where he really needs to work in the offseason on becoming just a physical monster -- guys like Pryzbilla and Kwame are every bit as big, and more solid as full grown men rather than kids with a little softness on them, and he has been getting moved a bit of position of late. There was a little life of a sort int he third, when he picked off an outlet pass and figured out how to make the refs pay-by-tweet system work for him, jsut slamming inside without much thought of doing anything other than jsut slamming inside, and waiting for the whistle happy refs to blow and blow and blow and send him to the line. Did not last long however as the phantom calls swung back around against him, he picked up his 4th for apparently invading somebody's personal space and effecting his chakras with his power bands, and the minutes were few and scattered from that point until he fouled out midway through the 4th having lasted only 20 minutes through the madness.

Udrih ( F ) -- you know, I looked at this grade and looked at this grade, and finaly just said, you know what? Yep. Beno was jsut terrible last night. It might have started in the second half in Portland, where he really struggled. But it was game long here. In fact he basically got his game highlight early in the first quarter on a nice change of direction on a breakout spinning Augustin around and around and laying it in. And then things got ugly, and it just killed us. As much as we sucked tonight, all Beno had to do was just hit anything he normaly hits, and we could easily have won this. But just..wow. And it wasn't only that he kept missing and missing, but he was just struggling in all aspects of the game, from decisionmaking, to dribbling, you name it. Kept on forcing bad drives into traffic and not coming close. Unfortunately I think maybe playing hoping to get bailed out by one of those magic whistles rather than just converting. Kept ion missing wide open threes on kicks as well, as all of them were well set up, his feet were set, and just...nothing. Finally got one of his short stop and pop jumpers to fall to start the third...and then promptly resumed sucking. Of course the cherry on top came on defense where he was blown by by Augustin on muiltiple occasions as he slashed inside and broke down our defense. Got a solitary hit in the early 4th, but just kept on missing little shots he should hit as we just never NEVER could convince any of our guys to hit even just 3-4 shots in a row for a mini-run.

Evans ( C+ ) -- you know, this was not what anybody could call a good game for Reke, but there was one thing about it that made me pretty satisfied, and that as the impression that Reke was trying to be the rock in the sea of chaos. During the worst of the Nov/Dec struggles Reke looked lost out there, lost in his own private sea of pain and not only not leading us, but actively draining us as other guys tried to pick him up. That's exactly the oppostie of what you look for from a star. Well in this game he was never really on, but throughout the game you could see that whatever his own struggles, he was trying to set people up, trying to get things going, trying to light a spark -- he was worrying about getting the other guys going rather than the other way around. Did not work of course, but I think he actually did a pretty good job setting up the offense here and could easily have had 10+ assists on any sort of normal night. But nobody responded, and the bricks rained from all directions. Reke came out still thinking he was hot with the jumper from the other night, but was quickly convinced otherwise as he was not only missing badly, he actually airalled two of them to sort of announce the ugliness of the game we were about to watch. Found Greene for an alley oop, which was about the only thing anybody was able to hit. Was having to really fight Stephen Jackson's superior size in the post (he's 6'8"), and picked up fouls doing it. Then had to pay with his hands in is pockets but these refs were just dying to blow the whistle. Started to use quick hard drives to draw attention and kick, but nobody was hitting anything. Finally got a couple of jumpers to fall late in teh half, including our only three of the entire night to cut the lead back to 10. Picked up his 4th foul on a phatom call almost as bad as the phantom call that took out Cousins a few minutes before. Kind of gave up on his own offense there for a long while, but the setting up other people finally paid some brief dividends in the early 4th as 2 or 3 of them een consented to hit those shots and we closed ground on a Cats team that was anythign but impressive, but just not as hirrid as us. Came up with a hige block on the break at the 2:45 mark to save a hoop, raced down the other way for the layup in traffic that could have cut it to 5 and given us one last burst of energy...and missed it. Bobcats go back the other way, lead is up to 8, and a moribuud team is just done. Had one more moment after the Cats tried to get all shaky and give us a shot in the final minute -- after Landry got a three pt play to cut it to 7, the Cats made a terrible turnover and Reke slammed inside, got to the line, and hit both FTs to make it 5 with 35 seconds to go and once again for the millionth time in these last 6 weeks give us a gambler's chance.

Bench

Landry ( B- ) -- in and forced a 1 on 1 post move for a brick, was really forcing some ugly 1 on 1 stuff throughout the early going, and yet was the only King with more than 2pts at the end of the first quarter. The little offense he was able to provide was important with nobody else able to get anything going. Had a little burst of effectiveness as a SF in the 4th as we went with the monster Cousins/Daly/Landry frontline -- could see Wallace struggling to bang with him during those minutes. Got a late 3pt play with us down 10 and a minute to go. Cut the lead to 7, and Reke would make it 5 a few secods later, but not enough. Not sure how he managed to grab only 3 rebs in 30min with so many loose balls around out there, but he's special that way (his per 40 reb rate of 8.5 is straight out of the Shareef/Mikki handbook and just a smidge behind Chase Budinger (8.8), Vladiimir Radmanovic (8.7) and Corey Maggette (8.6)). Still has to get a grade of some sort here for being basically the only player on the entire team functioning at a reasonable level of efficiency offensively.

Dalembert ( C ) -- in a game wihtout any offensive rhythm, it was difficult to spot Daly in for much of the game. Not that he was that terribly effective when he was in. And one of the league's better rebounders again was only middling on the boards while Kwame Brown in particualr muscled our big frontline guys out of the way on the glass. Had his most effective spell as he ran through the bulk of the 4th as we went big with two center and 1 Landry lineups. Might have been the most effective we were all night as we overwhelmed the Cats inside, but Daly himself, while anchoring things, never got very productive.

Jeter ( C ) -- didn't really get anything accomplished in his early stint, but was at least able to push the pace in a moribund game. Took a bad 1 on 1 shot that fell in the late 3rd, then drove and threw away the pass on the final play of the quarter.

Greene ( C+ ) -- some good defense and an alley oop from Reke, but man has he lost the thread on his jumpers which weren't even close. And this time unfortunately he was taking them, as I am guessing here that Westphal or somebody on the bench told him after his reluctance to shoot last time that he had to shoot more/show cofidence. Excfept this is not the way to gain it. Took a bad alley oop pass from Reke in the early second and while he couldn't convert it, he recovered the ball and hit a tough tough little fallaway hook thing. Some good defensive stops mixed in justified his minutes, as he did a much better job on Wallace and friends. Came up with a big spinning three point play with a minute to go in the 3rd for his final score. Just the play that Westphal routinely pulls him for, but he made this one and it cut the lead back to 4 and could have given us a shot at winning this game if we had been remotely competent on the night. But then missed a three, and after a few muddled minuts int eh early 4th we started experimenting with Landry as a power SF looking for answers. This was ugly offensively, but really in the little ways around the edges Donte probably had one of our more effective stints on the night. He rebounded, had a few good plays offensively, and had off and on impact on defense. He's just entirely forgotten how to shoot.

Jackson ( INC ) -- for all intents and purposes I have no notes on his 4 min of PT, but the boxscore says he notched 3 assists in those 4 minutes, which at 6'9" puts him squarely in the Magic Johnson tradition.

Refs ( F ) -- while wishing to avoid any incitement to violence I will just note that if anybody happened to run into these tools in a bar after the game last night, and just happened to kick them in the nads, you are my friend. It was just Refschool 101 for how you do NOT referee a basketball game, and 3 short guys with whistles were basically able to ruin an NBA basketball game and make it as much fun to watch as paint drying. That's not a claim of bias or them cheating us. Its them cheating the game, and the fans. By just being tweet happy idiots when the game would have run just fine without all the interference. This game can actually be played without any refs at all. 99% of all the basketbal ever played anywhere in the world is that way. Maybe it should be 100%

I notice that when Beno isn't hitting his shots we usually don't win. At this point we're not good enough to win games with Beno missing good looks

I have a hard time accepting the fact that the team that just took a dump and fell back in it against the Bobcats is the same team that looked so efficient and full of energy against Portland. It is like they went out after the Portland game and partied all night long drinking. The team that played well against Portland bears no resemblance to the team that stunk the place up at Arco last night. How could they possibly shoot that poorly the entire game? Wide open shots were missed. Bobcats defense was pretty good, but the Kings rushed everything and looked totally out of sync in the process. VERY FUGLY game! Very disappointing how the Kings handled the back to back games. Even with the second game of the back to back at home, the Kings looked totally lifeless.

It seemed like they were exhausted from playing the night before, but that is no excuse because the Bobcats had played the night before as well. How is it that a team full of young athletic players comes out the second night of a back to back and look that badly? It MUST be a lack of discipline. That is the only way to describe the debacle that occurred against the Bobcats. This Kings roster does not have many dependable veterans. You could really see the difference between the Bobcats veteran players and the Kings players. Veteran players are ready the 2nd night of a back to back. They dont use that as an excuse to stink up the joint.

The Kings have a very long way to go for their young players to learn what it takes to be a consistent winner in the NBA. Just no defense for the way the Kings played last night against Charlotte. You can see why the Kings need more veteran players to solidify the lineup. Relying on rookies and 2nd year players does not seem to be working very well for the Kings. Hopefully this offseason, the Kings can bring in 2-3 free agent players who can be relied upon to play consistently on a nightly basis. Too much youth can be a bad thing.

You could really see how outmatched the Kings are when you notice that they have no veteran presence to help out in the back court to help stabilize the team. Petrie brought in CBA scrubs to back up the 1 and 2, and it really shows. The Kings also do not have a consistent 3 who can make wide open shots on a regular basis. Once Tyreke and Beno started missing shots, the Kings were doomed. Beno has been very good this year but Evans has been very up and down. Kings need veteran players to help our rookie players get over the hump. The Bobcats played very good defense, but the Kings played right into their hands by settling for tough contested shots instead of moving the ball around and executing their offense. The Kings offense looked ragged and haphazard at best and were easily shut down by the Bobcats.

I think Jordan could have suited up and scored 30 against the Kings defense last night. Just a very ragged and un-veteran like performance by the Kings all around. The young players on the Kings have a long way to go to become a consistent unit. They showed a little improvement in Portland, then totally let the game get away from them at home. With a free agent vet or 2, the Kings could perhaps find a way to become more consistent. I believe the Kings need a quality 3 and a red hot shooting 2 in order to compete better against teams who clog the lane and force you to take outside shots. The Kings just dont have enough shooters to stay in the game if they have to score outside of 15 feet from the basket. Other teams just shut the Kings offense down by playing zone and clogging the lane to prevent Evans from driving to the hoop. If the Kings dont make their outside shots, they fall right on their faces. They need consistent outside shooting to loosen up the middle.

When the Kings do decide to spend some money on free agents, they need to look for a dependable veteran 1 or 2 that can hit his outside shots consistently in order to keep the defense honest. Too often teams just sag back into a zone against the Kings and dare our back court to shoot. Beno had an off game for sure but no one stepped up and made up for Beno's poor play. Evans didn't step his game up, he actually played even worse. He missed a stupid amount of layups and jump shots. When your best player goes 6-18 and does not get to the line to score, your team is going to lose. You can't shoot 36% the whole game and expect to win. Lets hope the Kings play better going forward and learn how to get other players involved when their main scorers are in a slump. Hopefully playing the Lakers will get the Kings going. If they play the way they did against the Bobcats in LA, the score will be another fugly lopsided one.

Horrible offense, tried to pick up the defense late and started over-committing and giving up long jumpers and offensive rebounds. Young mistakes, but more than that, stupid mistakes that you know better than to make. Zero timeouts by the coach to get his team settled, to slow a run, to buckle down defensively. Nothing. And horrible, awful, ridiculous decisions on offense, whether it was bad shots or turnovers (which are worse than bad shots).

Aggravating is putting it kindly.

This just made my day.

I recorded the game, because I was a the city council meeting in Sacramento (arena discussions). Apparently that was a good choice. Left Sacramento in time to catch the post-game radio show on the way home. When I heard, not only that it was a loss, but that there were a million ref calls that meant there was never any flow, I arrived home and just deleted the recording. Watched something else till bedtime. Maybe I should feel a smidgen of fan guilt for not watching it.........

nah. ;)
