I really like the May signing... if it goes down even more so if it was Ike vs May for that last big spot.

What it really boils down to was an undersized PF vs an undersized C

May is bigger and will be a very versatile 5 and a better 4. with the height of Hawes, JT, and Greene, May will def be spending time at the 5.

May is a talent no doubt. he's had problems... Weight and injurys, and Larry Brown as a coach... but for one year at under one mil. this is a great pick up. His weight is under control and hes had plenty of time to heal up.

Think so?

I was thinking that 6'9" is maybe an inch shorter than most good PFs are these days. And Cs I think of as bigger, e.g., if you look at the top 10 rebounding centers in the NBA last year, they have an average height of just over seven feet (7'0.2"), and none of them are as short as 6'9". Off the top of my head, I'd be hard pressed to name a starting NBA C who is that short. So I was thinking of May as an only slightly short PF.

I guess we'll see.

well hes not a starting 5.... obviously

but we just like alot of teams have a "small ball" second unit... and May at 6'9 and with his 260lbs is a decent backup 5... its better than shelden Williams at 6'7 or Ike at 6'7

Actually May is shorter than Shelden Williams. But I agree with your point that May can be a very good 2nd unit guy.

what? WOW!!! your right!

dont know who said it on here but someone but him at 6'9... i repeated it but i got it from someone else... but looking at the combine results your RIGHT!!!

well May certainly looks more athletic than the huge bulky tank that Williams is... because Williams was built like an over grown dwarf i guess he just seemed shorter than May... funny!

I'm quite positive that Sheldon Williams is much more fit than Sean May. Not saying he is a better basketball player, but Sheldon is a solid 15-20 pounds lighter than Sean May, so your logic is a little flawed.

I'm sick of people referring to Ike as being undersized. His body is as wide as any PF in the league, and he's better than May. Kings should have signed Ike instead of May.

I bet it came down to $$$ - one year at vet min vs. $4 mil± asking for multiyear deal. Not that he would get that, but they wanted it and were pushing for it. I bet, despite the agent's assertion otherwise, they had at least some discussion on it.

And how is 4 mil for a multiyear deal bad? That's my point. This team has no qualms about absorbing KT's contract and paying him 8 mil to sit on his ***, but they have serious reservations about a scoring big off the bench for 2 mil a season.

The Kings haven't renounced any of the FA's. So, technically they still have their Bird Rights to Ike & McCants & Booth. And, with only 12 people under contract (counting May)(not counting Brockman) it's still possible for the King to resign them. Assuming that they don't price themselves off the team.

It's not that they have no qualms, they just can't do anything about it.

They were willing to take on his deal in a trade, knowing it was longer than Webber's. They CHOSE to absorb that overpaid, longer term deal in order to get out from under Webber's deal. So they traded one financial problem for another. And yet, they don't want a quality big off the bench for 2 mil a season.

All of your arguments stem from a conviction that Diogu is a quality NBA big, a conviction that our front office may not share, that his three previous employers may not share, and that so far no team has demonstrated tremendous conviction about during free agency. And maybe you are right, and they are wrong. But either way you can hardly subscribe motives to the Kings in not resigning Diogu when they simply may not share your talent evaluation.

You're really equating a move from 4 1/2 years ago with one today?

Well, unfortunately at that time, Geoff believed KT had more potential (either as player or trade bait) than he actually did.

Any chance he turns into a good player?

The question is will he actually play. The book on him is that he isn't on the floor either because he's injured or ate too much while he was injured. Yeah he's got skills. But he might just be the guy that gets paid $800K to watch 82 games from courtside seats. Heck I wold do that for half the money. ;)

im sick of people thinking ike has any ability because of 2 games! that were at the end of the year!.... and one was against minny without al jefferson!... get it together!!!!!!!

paying May for 1yr at less than 1mil.... BEST DEAL FOR THE FUTURE AND NEXT YEAR!!!

No, they wanted $4 mil a year, not total. They wanted his offer picked up.

Hate to bring this up but May is 6'7" without shoes. The same height as Brockman. Diogu is 6'6.5" without shoes. May has a 7'2" wingspan, but Diogu also has a long wingspan. The point being, that height wise there's not that much difference between them. As for being undersized for a PF, well thats debatable. Since most of the PF's around the league are in the 6'6" to 6' 8.5" range. So maybe the normal is less than we would normaly think.

we covered this already im not the may expert and was misinformed... yeah they might be the same height but one is much cheaper and just as talented(MAY)

Technicaly correct. Williams is 6'7.5" without shoes, and May is 6'7" without shoes. A half inch is a half inch.:)

So if your willing to admit that they made a mistake with KT, and his contract is an albatross. And, they have been criticized adnauseum about the bad long term contracts that they have absorbed. Why do you now want to criticize them for rejecting the idea of possibly taking on another big contract for more than one year. I would think you would be apaulding them for finally learning their lesson.

Other than that not being the case of course.

The average is about 6'9". I would have to find the article, which would not be easy because I do not remmeber the source, exact time or methodology, but I think it was 6'9.25" for an average listed height a couple of years ago. And most of the really good ones are at least that height -- Bosh, Dirk, Duncan, Pau, Aldridge, Garnett etc. all 6'10"+. There are a handful of good 6'8ish shorties -- Boozer, Jamison, Brand etc., but its certianly not helping their careers. We can of course play the shoes on/shoes off game, but that is not terribly relevant and doesn't get us anywhere as everyone is at roughly the same relative height either way, and its relative height which would matter.

How can any reasonable person equate the situation with KT and the possibility of a short term deal under 4 mil for Ike? THIS IS NOT ANOTHER BENO CONTRACT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HERE. That is beyond stupid to equate the two. Ike can be a big off the bench who can produce for a very reasonable salary, NOT a LONG term deal for a VASTLY OVERPAID player whose contract and production (or lackthereof) will hamper the team's flexibility for the future. This is not a long term deal. This is not a MLE or high salary player. This is the idea that May was chosen because the Kings don't want to spend under 3 mil a year for a quality reserve big despite their willingness to spend far more than that on guys left and right prior to this.

I would think you would be apaulding them for finally learning their lesson.
I thought you were smarter than that. Apparently, you aren't. Anybody who thinks the idea of trying to negotiate for a short term multiyear deal for around 2 mil a year is in any way similar to a KT, Beno, Moore, etc contract is out of their mind.

Just because they didn't sign the QO doesn't mean the Kings can't enter negotiations when he became a free agent. They didn't, and have made it clear by their non-action that they have no desire to negotiate for a deal to retain Ike. They choose May over Ike. But this is getting a bit off topic. The Kings chose May over Ike, which was a bad move IMO because Ike can produce off the bench at a reasonable price (seeing the limited options in FA), and May won't. I'll leave it at that.

Look, your ENTIRE response, and on and on and on response, is predicated on you having an apparently rather vastly higher opinion of Ike than the Kings do. And that is fine and all. But all of the aspersions about how this makes the Kings cheap and whatnot are ridiculous. Have you ever considered, maybe, just maybe, that they don't think he can play? Right or wrong. That they are just not convinced he is WORTH your "little" $3mil a year contract or whatever?

Its really not that hard to figure out where they are coming form here. more difficult I suppose if you consider it absolutely inconceivable that anybody could come to that conclsuon about Ike, but our front office is not the first to do so. And again, maybe they are right, maybe they are wrong. But its not a cheap thing if you don't think the guy can play. Unless you are suggesting its good strategy to spend millions on a guy they don't think can help.

Why should the Kings pay a player who has been a bench warmer his entire career? Even if it is not for the MLE, $4 million in this economy is not something that owners want to throw away. Ike had 2 good games last year against a bunch of nobodys. He may end up fulfilling his potential elsewhere, but to assess his value to the team based on inconsequential games at the end of the season is ludicruous.
