Going the Extra Mile (Joe Maloof interview)

I didn't see anyone post a link to this, but if it already was then I apologize.

Some interesting key notes:

Joe Maloof wants to put together a "ticket package for our season-ticket holders, to bring them out here for four or five games. All the top draft picks are out here. I’ve seen (Greg) Oden twice, (Kevin) Durant, our guy (Spencer Hawes) of course, and your Corey Brewer. The way it’s set up with the venues here at UNLV and the talent we have here, it’s just great."

Joe Maloof answered questions on the "glory days" Kings, including the Horry shot.

Joe Maloof on how much owners should be involved in the basketball operations of their franchise: "There are two different parts to an NBA franchise: the business part, and the basketball part. We try to balance the two, but in reality, our decisions are going to be based on what’s best for our team on the court, not business wise. Four out of eight years we’ve paid the luxury tax, and we’re not afraid to pay it. We want to put the best basketball team we can on the court and not worry about the money. We’ll worry about that later."

If they're not afraid to pay the luxury tax, then why don't they go out and spend some money to bring in players that will be a part of the future? It's all talk....

I agree w/ the above.. They have pinched pennies the last four years, and it has caused the team to lose a lot of talent. There were some salary moves in recent years that have just not made much basketball sense. The Kings need to figure out where they are going.

I'm not going to complain about the Maloofs not spending more. The team has had one of the highest payrolls in the league for years. I don't need nor want my team to buy their way to a championship.

Ummm....I want my team to win, I don't care how they do it. I'm a Forty Niners fan. Eddie D spent A LOT of money in the glory years, and I can't say I care much, since they had some of the best football teams ever ever assembled from top to bottom.

Me too on the 49ers. I guess I'm thinking more along the lines of the Yankees or Knicks. I'd prefer the Kings have a high payroll (well, I would when it was a good thing for the team), I just don't want crazy billionaire owners buying a championship.

Why not? You like the teams as it is now?
Of course!

No wait, of course not. But how much I like the current team has nothing to do with whether I want them to buy a championship.

It's really not a big deal. If the Kings bought a championship I would still be thrilled, since just spending a lot of money doesn't guarantee you anything. My point was just that I'd prefer to focus on what moves are being made rather than how much money is being spent, since in general the Maloofs are spending a good amount. If that ever changes permanently, then I might start complaining, but for now the amount of money they spend on salaries is fine by me.

This again?

I think it's pretty clear the Maloofs were willing to spend the money when they really thought it might get us into the NBA finals. But it didn't work and people are whining about how much the Maloofs are spending?

I think it's more important to get rid of the current albatross contracts we have before we clamor for them to spend millions and millions more.

You can bet that during the years when the Maloofs were spending a lot of money on players (and we had that great run of years in the playoffs) that they were bringing A LOT of money back in from the fan support. The Kings jerseys were the most sold in the NBA and attendance at games back then were true sell-outs.

When a team pays the luxury tax, they are hoping to have good enough players to take them deep into the playoffs. Every game that they play in the playoffs is extra money to them. Parking fees, ticket sales, concession sales, clothing, etc are brought in with every home playoff game. I'm sure all of the accountants are thrilled when there is a series that goes to 7 games because everyone makes more money.

The catch is when you spend all that money and your team ends up not working out for whatever reason.....Or when you are like Dallas and get knocked out in the first round of the playoffs :)p sorry, I couldn't resist rubbing that in!).

Why would the Maloofs even consider paying LT during a rebuild season? It makes no sense what so ever. You pay the tax to win but untill you are signing a serious impact player it's pointless to talk about and down the road you still have to pay HUGE for those impact players when they become overpaid vets on a team that has no real franchise player... which is EXACTLY where the Kings are now. Too bad the brain trust upstairs did not realize this when they started to "rebuild on the fly".

Bibby was woth the near max he got not so much for his individual play, but for how he fit into THAT line up. When an ageing Vlade was on his way out giving the second best passing big man in the NBA a mint made compleete sense, but once you trade the franchise player with the max contract out of the team; all you have left are OVER PAID role players and I am sory to say that now the team ends up between a rock and a hard place. They HAVE to get a franchise type player to build arround, all other trades for any other purpose is pointless. You can only get that franchise player for certain by trading for him or signing him as an FA... the draft is no gaurentee. So Petrie needs to some how either trade for enough expiring contrats to land the big fish or some how convince a team to let one go for a handfull of bait.

Boston pulled it off but it literlly cost them their future. If I am GP I am looking at the 08 and 09 FA's and making some calculations, then having a fire sale. If my fossiles and kids "lose" me into a 1-5 pick GREAT I might get lucky and land a true young franchise player, if not I at least get a young starter on my way to BUYING a franchise player. In the mean time the only reason to pay the tax is if I have to take a REAL bad big contract for one year to move a turd like KT.
