Gilbert Arenas blogs about other peoples business

If it was a fan, it would be funny. If it was a sportswriter, it might be funny. But this guy is making fun of other NBA players and that's not gonna be appreciated, IMHO. I don't like Gilbert Arenas anyway, though, so I couldn't possibly care less if he sticks his foot in his mouth all the way to the number on his jersey.

I hear what he says though. These players are not all that, and they turn down $12,000,000? That's an anomaly.

Gilbert strikes again

Arenas is now trying to defend his earlier comments by, oh wait, using more players name (even Chris Webber gets mentioned this time for not taking the Europe contract).

His point may be valid - his arguments, funny - but as VF pointed out he is not a fan or a sports writer....he's a peer of the people he's criticizing. That's just being plain immature...and I'm pretty sure Gilbert is not the most popular player around the league right now.

Then I was saying the same thing with Chris Webber. We talked about everybody. The Chris Webber thing, he had money and he turned it down and now, where is he at?

Dad: “Well, he’s resting.”

Me: “OK, same thing with Sprewell. He’s resting. Resting right out of the league.”

He doesn't seem to understand the Webber situation. Webber isn't looking for money, he wants to win an NBA championship. You can only get one by actually playing in the NBA, so taking the Euro offer would eliminate any chance he has left, basically playing himself right out of the league. It's up in the air whether Dumars will actually pick him up, but they've made a move that looks like it's clearing the way for that. It may happen, it may not, but at least the door is still open.

All this talk of contract will make for an interesting summer for Gil. He's probably lost a few potential millions due to the injury already.

not sure that he really cares about being popular. criticizing peers can be constructive, and it's up to the guys being talked about (deng, iguodola, okafor) to take the useful bits out of arenas' comments. that's a sign of maturity.

my favorite part of the blog though:

We used to have a team gift exchange and they started getting mad at the gifts I was giving out. I gave Larry Hughes a bobblehead of me one year. I’ve also given out highlight tapes of myself. I give big, signed pictures of myself so they can look at me over the summer. You know, big ones that they can put on the wall or put it in the family room. That’s the kind of funny gifts I do. I don’t want to go out there and spend no money. I thought rich people were supposed to buy other rich people funny stuff, but they stopped doing the gift exchange because I wasn’t playing by the rules.

Are you suggesting that Arenas is the mature one out of this process?

nah, just that it's an opportunity for those other guys to take the high road rather than feel wounded or snipe back. arenas is a loud mouth, but what he says does have truth to it.
Just because something is true, doesn't mean a person is required to say it out loud. Self-censorship is your friend.;)

ah, very true. :)

i think though that the people in this thread who are against what arenas is saying are reacting more to the manner in which he's saying it rather than to what he's actually saying. because at the heart of it, his messages are 1) don't overestimate your worth, and 2) the opportunity can be fleeting if you happen to get injured.

This is poignantly ironic, given Arenas' present situation.
