George Karl

I knew this thread was coming, and I love it. Do your thing, VF21!
  1. Don't know how much of this we can attribute to GK, but I choose to believe that he had a lot to do with it. He's a proven coach, and I'd like to believe that the players bought in to what he had to say. After that first timeout, they seemed to have a fire lit under them, and that's what we need.
  2. Andre Miller was a bleeping wizard out there. I know he's not very athletic, and he's been with the team for ONE day, but it seemed like every time he caught the ball, he knew exactly what to do with it. Truly impressive. Watching a true floor general on the floor was a very welcome sight. I LOVE the idea of him mentoring our guards under GK, and I can't say enough about how sneaky sharp that trade was. If you could put Miller's brain into Collison's body...
  3. I renewed my season tickets when we signed Karl, and I'm glad I did. If we can cut WAY down on the turnovers, which I think we will, I'm optimistic.
We won, we looked a lot better, and life is good. Even if this season is dead, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Let's win every damned game we can, and as Brick would say, screw the draft pick...it's been handcuffing us for years.

Go Kings!

Anyone have the introduction tonight? I missed it :(

I am uploading the video I shot from the upper deck now. Will link to it when it is done. I live in the country so the interwebs speed is a bit pokey compared to most.

Love George Karl. He's got a special kind of presence about him. He's the rare type of coach/leader that inspires his players to perform at a high level. I really believe this team is capable. We saw it the first month of the season when they were winning despite having a brutal schedule. When Malone was fired the team went into the dumps and weren't excelling. There was no leadership. No passion. Heck, I had no passion as a fan. I haven't fully watched a game in weeks. Now I'm excited again.

Look, I'm as excited as anyone that maybe - just maybe we finally have a veteran, proven coach like many of us have been begging for for years to head this team, but -

George Karl is not a wizard.
He can't simply wave a magic wand and turn Omri from a bumbling scrub who can't dribble the basketball into a wizened assassin on the floor. He can't force the team to want to play with effort and want to win.

Many of these players did not want to win or play hard for Ty Corbin. When they wanted to win under Malone, the team was a serious threat in the league - now, they may be again simply because they WANT to play well now.

This first win was about the players more than the coach.

The only personnel difference was Andre Miller, who actually SHOULD be credited to George Karl, not PDA who most people are actually thanking for that.
Ironically, Karl's biggest contribution so far was having Miller come here for him. And make no doubt, there's no way PDA makes that trade without Karl on the sidelines. Perfect example of how a coach can contribute to veterans coming here.

this is a defacto result of hiring a permanent coach. They have to play will effort cause he will be here next year and the players may not.

Or just a competent one who knows how to put players in a position to succeed. If you go out every night knowing you are likely not going to win, it wears on you. Heck, it wore on the fans, and we aren't the ones participating!

I agree with this. Miller is Karl's first personnel move.

I think you can have both of these emotions without being wrong. Everyone in the building is obviously in the honeymoon phase. Karl has breathed new air into the dead legs of our personnel. Everyone's playing harder for the new coach.

You only hope that while the honeymoon period wanes, the players are getting coached up properly and buying into the system. Ideally it would be a quick try for fast points, with a more traditional inside/out if the defense is set. I can't tell you how amazing it is to see someone out there that understands angles and sealing off of opponents in order to get your big man the ball. Miller needs to rub off on our passers because it's been ridiculously pathetic.

You keep your big man fed, his energy level up, his emotions on the positive side, and you come away with a DMC that's engaged defensively and one that will run back as well. That's Andre's value. Karl will tell, Dre will show.
