George Hill

Joerger made some comments about Hill be a "systems guy" when he tried to explain Hill's lack of effectiveness. I'm not exactly sure what that really means though.
I’m going to propose a hypothetical defense of Hill. Hill succeeded at both Utah and San Antonio which are very pass centric team basketball kind of teams. He has good basketball IQ and moves well on and off the ball.

Kosta is that kind of player but ZBo is not. If you go to NBA.com ZBo has the highest usage of regular Kings players and Kosta has the lowest. Almost half of Zbo’s usage. With ZBo if you throw him the ball he can often get you a bucket but the man often isn’t going to pass it out or hit the cutter. His assist percentage is almost half of Kostas.

That type of player is a horrible mix with Hill. It’s okay for Hills assists (he had 7) but death to his scoring because Hill isn’t a Kyrie that can take anyone off the dribble. Hill is the type who would make a pass, make a cut, make a layup. But if that pass back never occurs then Hill doesn’t score.

Many of the Kings players fit that model. Bogdan, Buddy, Justin. It’s not an accident the team had 14 assists in the second quarter and that many of those players look better in the second team playing with Kosta and not ZBo.

Seeing this Knicks game, dude looks shot.. He has lost his confidence, but that may have started with the complacency and snow balled into psychological. I just will be pleasantly surprised at this point if it changes in a Kings uniform

Maybe Hill would do better coming off the bench, like Buddy has.

The pressure would be off of him to be the primary scorer in the starting unit and moves Fox into the starting lineup.

It may get his shot and confidence back up if he is playing against other teams 2nd unit.
A 9 year vet and highest paid player on your team shouldn't need to "get his confidence back". He's playing like ****, plain and simple and it's on him to step up.

Curious question for the locals: what have Grant/any other local media been saying about Hill's play?

Just because a player is the highest paid player doesn't mean they can't go through a tough period.

As a coach, he is responsible to help the player get through it.

Sometimes a temporary or permanent move to the bench can help get a player to play better long term.

Pro sports is a business. Pay people a lot and you expect results. So far Hill is a bust. Beyond disappointing. There is time for him to respond, but he needs to get with it or he is going to get traded.

Don’t worry about Hill, he will come along as the team around him comes along. Bogs is getting acclimated, Buddy is struggling to be a reliable scorer as he has in the past, Temple knows he’s stop gap, Willie continues to look for a game, Zbo is a scorer first, a team player second. It seems a lot more difficult to get that bunch to click together than the kids and Koufos in the second unit. It’ll come around.

We should pay Temple as much as we can without hampering signing our own guys. That's the price of being a hack of a franchise for so many years.

At the rate he's playing, we might actually have to attach something to dump that contract.
I don't know if it's that bad, but we've come a long way from the "Hill will help a ton now. But, if Fox is ready now, the Kings can readily flip Hill for a 1st rounder at any point between January 2018 and the February 2019."

He's in Sacramento because most of the teams with cap space didn't want to pay him that salary. You can get out of the last year, but next season is pricey at 19 million.
He's an injury risk.
He's playing very poorly.
He's probably signed his last contract of significance.

I'm generally in favor of riding out this entire season because he has to play better. But if he's crummy most of the year, he's a rough contract. A team would be taking on $19 million of 18-19 salary for a back up point guard, who had real questions as to whether: he's physically still got it; and/or he's mentality, financially, otherwise still in a spot where he can get it back.

take a look at the teams he's played for. San Antonio, Indiana & Utah were all half court offenses and now that the Kings want to push more, that's simply not his forte. He is a half court PG and Joerger stated from day one of training camp that he wants this team to run, no?

Do we have a trade ban with the Knicks?

I’d seriously trade him for Noah, Ramon Sessions and another pick..

Yeh Noah is a bad contract but would serve as a backup to WCS.

Koufus should be traded to a contender

I don't see Hill as a scorer or an assist man playing with the Kings. He can handle and play defense, but he is not much of a leader and missing in action on offense.
At this stage, Bogdan and Fox are the best leaders, followed by Randolph. They can all play on the offensive end.

I would dump ZBo before Hill. Hill plays a style of cutting and passing that fits the rest of our players not named ZBo. We would function better using Boston’s offense and ZBo isn’t a good fit for it.

Hill appears much more comfortable as a 2 playing with Fox. His offense has perked up a lot.
He just looks more comfortable period. Hopefully whatever off-the-court issues may have been affecting him have been resolved.

My only problem with Hill is that he over dribbles at times. He drove me nuts last night in the second half dribbling away the shot clock and then ending up with a highly contested, and sometimes wild prayer shot. I realize he's playing off the ball, but that doesn't mean he has to throw all of his PG skills out the window and try to be Michael Jordan. Just saying!
