Kings President of Basketball Operations, Geoff Petrie spoke after the Bonzi Wells press conference regarding the Kings and free agency over the rest of the summer. Below is what he had to say:
Geoff: “We’re still involved in negotiations with Darius (Songaila) and Mo Evans and we’re also looking at what other players are out there and what’s going to happen after this amnesty program rolls down on the 15th. Those are ongoing things that I really can’t tell how they’re going to play out right now. We’re still looking to add or keep people on our roster.”
On Darius Songaila
Geoff: “Our preference is to try and keep him—that’s our preference. Because of restricted free agency, our negotiations are ongoing. We’ll have to see where it goes.”
“We have what they call Early Bird rights with Darius, because he played here for two years. When you have Early Bird rights you can pay up to the average players’ salary, which is the same as the mid-level exception, so we don’t have to use our midlevel exception either to resign him or match another offer.”
On the progress of negotiations with Mo Evans:
Geoff: “They are about the same. They are looking at what they’re other options might be, he’s also a restricted free agent. They’re just ongoing.”
“You can say that you’d like to do this person first or this person this second, but the nature of how things actually happen doesn’t allow for that. We have interest in both of them—we’re also looking at other potential situations, but there isn’t anything imminent at the moment.”
On how the summer has been for the team:
Geoff: “Potentially, I like what we’ve done with our wings and our backcourt with Francisco and Kevin. We anticipate playing them minutes, but they’re young players and there is going to be a learning curve to see how fast that goes. Their abilities, their length and their quickness—over time I think that’s really going to help us.”
