Nik seems to just have an aura that makes the guy he's defending suddenly play better.

It's called the "rookie bubble". Play too close and it's an automatic foul. Play back and they just shoot over you. He'll figure it out eventually the little tricks you can get away with to get the calls you want (or don't want) though it probably won't happen this season.
