Hi, Kings fan... this is Angela Tsai, and I just wanted to write a response to those who've written about me on this site, and put a human touch to the face you see on television. This face happens to read what you post.

First off, I may not agree with what you say, but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it. BUT I'm a big believer that integrity behind words -- whether they be in a blog comment or a face-to-face conversation -- is paramount.

I ordinarily wouldn't respond to such comments on a blog like this, but I do believe that as a fellow Kings fan, I have a right to defend myself here in a sincere and intelligent way.

I've been in Sacramento for a little over a month now and absolutely love my job. No bull, coming from a tried-and-true New Yorker. Now, when I first got here I didn't have any live game experience, and I'll be the first to admit that I've definitely had to adjust to that. Since I started, I've received constructive criticisms from my directors and fans alike, and have been working hard on the technical game aspects of the broadcast. I may not be as extreme of a basketball expert like my esteemed colleagues -- a former NBA coach (Jerry Reynolds) or a broadcaster in this market for 20 years (Grant Napear) -- but I've got definite opinions on the game, I'm learning every minute and I bring a breadth of hosting experience talking to NBA players and personalities to the table. And like many of you, I am a FAN.

And yes, I am a new face -- and female to boot -- in a sports world dominated by men, and that's sure to provoke turmoil (as seen on these boards). I'm realistic -- I'd be remiss if I didn't expect a certain amount of hostility or chauvinistic comments about my appearance etc. So I'm not concerned about that. But here's the thing: in the brief time I've been here, Sac fans have proven to me how adaptable and supportive they are in times of good AND bad. I know change is scary, guys, but would you still love your Kings if they weren't dynamic, if there weren't stories constantly fueling your message boards, if there wasn't drama?

I absolutely value the power of the internet as a basis for community-building, which is why sites like these have the power to do a lot of good. I may be new to Sac and represent change, but I'm a fan of the Kings and want to hear what you have to say about the team. I'd love to hear from someone who's got a passion for sports, for broadcasting, and most importantly, for finding the important and compelling stories of those around us.

Let's get into the meat of why we post on sites like this. Let's argue about why a running team like the Suns can have a stellar regular season but will never be able to win a championship. Or how Reggie Theus ultimately may have big shoes to fill, but he is carving his own path as a rookie coach. I am absolutely open and thrilled to talk to fans who want to know what my journey's been like, and I'd love to learn the same. We've all got something to say.

I've seen games all around the league in almost every NBA city, and what's blown me away is the loyalty, passion and knowledge that Kings fans bring to Arco each and every game. And that's evident on sites like these -- despite the criticisms, if you didn't care, you wouldn't post. It's as simple as that. I genuinely trust that this season will just get better and better as Theus & Co. continue to develop an identity. Again, no BS: I'm really proud to be a part of this Kings fan community, and hostile words aside, I know you are too.

Welcome to the #1 Sacramento Kings Online Community. We're very glad to have you touch base with us and appreciate that you took the time to do so!

As someone who has been just a little critical of your initial performances, I'm willing to pull in the claws and give you a fair chance. After all, as you say, it's about our Kings. And I've been one of the faithful since 1985.

Again, welcome!

(And just so you know - I'm more like you than you may realize. I'm a female moderator on a sports message board and that, too, is not too common but you'll find there are a lot of female members on this forum and it's no problem at all. It's about the basketball and it's about the Kings!)

:)

Hrmm... Takes character to step into the lion's den like this... Especially after what some of us have said about you. Welcome to KingsFans.

Well, Angela, that was a very very well written post. Hopefully, we will all benefit from the "character" (as Slim says) that you displayed.

WELCOME TO KINGSFANS.COM!!!

Let me be the first to say:

This thread is useless without pictures :D (J/K)

Now that that is out of the way, welcome to the board!
I wish I could understand the circumstances involving the criticism that you have been getting, but unfortunately here in Calgary (Canada), I don't get much Kings games on TV.
Worst part of it is, I gave up my front row tickets to the Calgary Flames hockey game tonight (gf hates me for it) so that I could stay home and watch the Kings vs. Rockets game tonight.....Unfortunately, I just found out that it got cancelled, and their showing UFC instead.....
Very pissed off at the moment.

Very cool, Angela, that...

... you wrote such a impassioned, well-written post to us, some of which who had pretty disparaging words about you. I really cringed with some of them, though I am guilty of a, I suppose, "chauvinistic" comment complementing you on your beauty, so, for that, I'm sorry.

Any chance that you'd be able to post some insights to the team, the players and the coaches? Or are you bound contractually to not make insider comments on fan boards?

Welcome to Sacramento, Angela. This town--like any other town--has its sinners and saints.

I have a long and fun history with New York. One time on a frozen, snowy Christmas morning, I decided to go for a long run, starting at 0600hrs. I started out from the Atrium in Greenwich Village and ran right up the middle of 5th Ave in the middle of the traffic-less street, then ran through Central Park path that ran through a dark tunnel (I was rather nervous to run through that, I'll tell ya), then back down to Greenwich Village right down the middle of Broadway. No traffic, not a car moving, not even a big-O city -bred Norway rat. It started to snow during the last part of my run and I was wearing only long-pants tights and a tank-shirt. Crazy, I know.

Then I couldn't get back into the Atrium, as it was locked, so had to wait outside in the cold while shivering with my sweat to get back in. What was I think'n?

guys, but would you still love your Kings if they weren't dynamic, if there weren't stories constantly fueling your message boards, if there wasn't drama?

Well, I would like if we were as boring as the Spurs

and figuratively speaking - You do have balls

I'll say welcome to Kingsfans and hope you enjoy your stay, we have a good bunch.

Hope to see you grow into your new position, no one starts a new job and is perfect, we're all just passionate about everything Kings.

Anyway was a nice first post and took a big person to come and here and kind of confront us, believe it or not we do wish nothing but the best for you...like it's been said we just love our Kings.

Again we have a very friendly community which I'm sure you know and will continue to find out.

Welcome again which I've said maybe too many times...

Angela: Welcome to the group and thank you for posting your thoughts. I know we all appreciate your post as it was well written and came from the heart. Please feel free to post any time.

By the way, would you accept a friend request on MySpace? :D

I should be your first friend as I was backing you up many times.
Dont believe me? Go look in the Angela Tsai flame archives. :D

Anyways, I think you should really indulge in this Kings board. You may very well become the first courtside reporter with a fanbase interaction.

Plus, you will have the first hand account on what the fans think on many NBA and Kings topics that you can incorporate in your reports.

eh eh?

Welcome to the community, Angela. Like Citrus said, it takes a lot of guts to step into the Lion's Den, and I have to give you respect for that.

I've been critical of your performance. It ultimately stems from the fact that I want my courtside reporters to have some substance and show some passion, not just be eye-candy, and I wasn't sure I was going to get that with you.

But this post certainly gives us some insight as to who you are and what your perspective is... If you can exhibit this kind of passion in your on-court personality, I think a lot of us will warm up to you quickly. I know I will.

I hope you'll continue to drop by and keep in touch with us.

Is there any way to know if this is really you or not?

Are you on a vacation? I haven't seen you in several weeks on a Kings broadcast.

First off, I may not agree with what you say, but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it. BUT I'm a big believer that integrity behind words -- whether they be in a blog comment or a face-to-face conversation -- is paramount.

So true.

And like many of you, I am a FAN.

So when will you be back on TV?

And yes, I am a new face -- and female to boot -- in a sports world dominated by men, and that's sure to provoke turmoil (as seen on these boards).

Actually, I don't think your being a female is an issue for anybody. We love Kara Lawson. There are plenty of men on the broadcast that we criticize as well. There are many very successful women in sports broadcasting.

Personal comments can certainly be uncomfortable, but in a role that puts you on TV, those kinds of comments are to be expected, right? Again, I don't think there's anything chauvinistic. Women comment on men's looks all the time.

I absolutely value the power of the internet as a basis for community-building, which is why sites like these have the power to do a lot of good.

I didn't realize sports fans forums were about "doing good". Most of the one's I've ever seen are more places to let off steam and share the pain or joy with fellow fans.

I may be new to Sac and represent change,

Welcome to Sac, by the way. What change are you representing?

but I'm a fan of the Kings and want to hear what you have to say about the team. I'd love to hear from someone who's got a passion for sports, for broadcasting, and most importantly, for finding the important and compelling stories of those around us.

Well, we all have a passion for sports here so you've come to the right place.

Yep, that's what we do here. Join on in.

Great!

Glad to see a strong lady sticking up for herself. As one of the few who actually stood up for you from day one, I hope you have a long and rewarding career here. See you at the games.

Interesting from a member of the Kings organization to actually pay this site a visit. I sometimes wish that higher management would check out kingsfans or other blogs so there wouldn't be as much disconnect between fans and ownership.

As being new to the Sacramento community, you might not know the past court side reporter for Kings games (you will if you read the whole post). Simply, the size of the shoes that you are trying to fill was too large.

Personally, I've only seen one of your court side reports, not brilliant or stellar in my mind. From what I've heard and seen, I think that you could ask harder/more meaningful questions. Then again, none of community really knew who you were beyond the tiny court side clips. It would be interesting if you could continually put some real material here. Then we'd know how much you care about your job, how articulate you are, and where your prospectives come from.

I had to come down the hall from the other room just to say thanks for posting Angela, that was an impressive answering salvo.

Welcome to Sacramento and thanks for stepping in here. :)

Just to clarify a bit? It appears Ms. Tsai has posted this same message on a couple of Kings boards. One of them, as it happens, was much ruder than we ever thought of being.

Just to keep the record straight that although we may have beeen and will be critical we were not anything close to the comments made elsewhere.

Great post Angela and welcome to the greatest message board on the planet. I dont think you did a good Job at all as sideline reporter and couldnt wait until they replaced you but i know that is a very tough job and you deserve another chance.

My only real complaint was that she did an interview that carried well over into the game and didn't stop. I don't know about anyone else but I don't pay for satellite TV to see courtside interviews DURING a Kings game. I'd rather see the action on the court and listen to the chatter during the breaks.

Where has Angela been:confused:

I heard her on Kings Talk the other night racing with Henry Turner and thought it was one of the cutest things?

Wow, you weren't kidding. I went to check it out and now I wished I hadn't.

That makes more sense. I seem to recall that generally speaking the criticisms here were just that, critiques of performance and not character attacks. I was going to point that out to Ms. Tsai, but if she was making a general statement about internet posters in general then I guess I don't need to. It would be nice if she had the time to differentiate between the different posters on the different boards. But still, the effort to give us a peek into her point of view is very much appreciated.

Sorry if this is a little off-topic.

I'm an ASA major at UCD, and just wanted to know what your time with AZN tv was like before helping out with the Kings organization. It's always refreshing to see a new face round these parts. I'd say more encouraging things, but you kind of get that picture from being around here with all these great people. Thanks for being human (what with the posting on here and all).

That's my biggest complaint and it doesn't just apply to Ms. Tsai's reports. It happens on other sports channels, too.

I was critical, too, Angela, but am more than willing to give you a chance to grow into the job. It took a lot of nerve to post in here and elsewhere. I'm impressed. Welcome to Sacramento and welcome to this board. I wish you success in your new job.
