Free Agency has started !!

You read it wrong.
Quote from Coon's CBA FAQ (http://www.cbafaq.com):

"new midlevel" you described is called "Room Mid-Level" and it will be available to Minny if Batum signs the reported offer sheet and Blazers don't match.
Darko is set to make $5,228,000 this season so his amnesty will create cap space needed to sign Roy.

No. I have bolded the relevant bit above. Because the T'Wolves started out this free agency period with cap room, they do not get the full MLE. They will have access to the "Room MLE" described above, which is approximately half the size of the standard MLE, if they spend up to the cap. However, the reported contract with Brandon Roy is twice the size of the Room MLE, so they would have to make other moves, most likely amnestying Darko, to make the cap room to sign Roy to that deal. They cannot in any way, shape, or form have access to a full MLE this season.

i see now, thanks for clearing it up guys

This is dead on, absolutely correct! You can't have your cake and eat it too so to speak.

Actually that's not true. The MLE has a cap hold even for teams under the cap. #26 under cbafaq

26. How do exceptions count against the cap? Does being under the cap always mean that a team has room to sign free agents? Do teams ever lose their exceptions?
If a team is below the cap, then their Disabled Player, Bi-Annual, Mid-Level (either the Taxpayer or Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level, whichever applies to the team) and/or trade exceptions are added to their team salary, and the league treats the team as though they are over the cap1. This is to prevent a loophole, in a manner similar to free agent amounts (see question number 38). A team can't act like it's under the cap and sign free agents using cap room, and then use their Disabled Player, Bi-Annual, Mid-Level and/or trade exceptions. Consequently, the exceptions are added to their team salary (putting the team over the cap) if the team is under the cap and adding the exceptions puts them over the cap. If a team is already over the cap, then the exceptions are not added to their team salary. There would be no point in doing so, since there is no cap room for signing free agents.

So being under the cap does not necessarily mean a team has room to sign free agents. For example, assume the cap is $58 million, and a team has $51.5 million committed to salaries. They also have a Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception for $5 million and a trade exception for $5.5 million. Even though their salaries put them $6.5 million under the cap, their exceptions also count toward their team salary, increasing their total to $62 million, or $4 million over the cap. So the team actually has no cap room to sign free agents, and instead must use its exceptions to sign players.

Teams have the option to renounce their exceptions in order to reclaim their cap room. So in the example above, if the team renounced their Traded Player and Mid-Level exceptions, then the $10.5 million is taken off their team salary, which then totals $51.5 million, leaving them with $6.5 million of cap room which then can be used to sign free agent(s).

Ray Allen has informed Boston that he has decided to sign with Miami, league source tells Y! Sports.

Woohoo! Go Miami! If you don't love big markets, you don't love NBA basketball.

But that only exists if you're not very far under the cap. If the total of your salaries + exceptions ever falls under the cap, you lose the exceptions. Poof. They go away, and they don't come back. (Except for the "Room MLE" which magically appears if you spend back up to within the Room MLE of the cap.)

So technically, had the T'Wolves held on to all their FA cap holds and not opted out of the unguaranteed money due to Brad Miller and Martell Webster, they would have had an MLE available. But in order to have the cap room to make the offer sheet to Batum, they had to go $11M (or wherever the offer starts) under the cap. Those exceptions went away when they got far enough under the cap to make the offer sheet, and they won't come back. I guess there's a remote chance that before July 11 Batum tells Minnesota that he's NOT going to sign, and since technically nothing has happened yet Minny would never make the offer sheet, and they could stay close enough to the cap to get the MLE. But the instant that offer sheet is signed, bye bye MLE.

Once again I agree, and this is why I hate this moratorium period, where just about everything is a maybe this or a maybe that. Until someone signs on the dotted line, nothing is in concrete. For all we know, JT may have already agreed to what the Kings offered, or turned down the offer out of hand. It would be nice to know one way or the other.

I've always wondered if Petrie and the Kings know what a great PR tool they're wasting by not giving their fans at least an indication that they're out there trying. I think the fans would be a lot more forgiving if they at least knew the Kings made offers and attempted trades. Instead of looking like nobodys home.

I don't have an answer to my question: do you think the average fan pays that much question to the off season movement or do the simply get into basketball mode at the end of the season and see who's on the team? We are not average by any means.

Hard to say. Its a bit of the chicken or the egg thing. Its hard to prove that fans aren't interested if you don't give them something to be interested in. I read a lot of the other teams newspapers around the country on a regualr basis, sometimes on a daily basis if searching for info, and the majority have something about their team on a daily basis. Now some of it is manufactured by the paper through interviews etc. But a lot of it is manufactured by the team as well.

Now there's no doubt that the Bee could do a better job than it does, but I don't expect them to regularly manufacture stories. Some of that is on the Kings PR dept. I just think they're missing the boat.

Most fans that I talk too are NOT like us during the off season. They start paying attention either during the pre season or when the season starts.

This has probably been posted somewhere else, but just in case:

#NBAKings are close to an agreement on a new contract with PF Jason Thompson according to a source.

Remember those days?

Seems like half a lifetime ago.

I like how some of the same people who were angry about the Kings potentially signing RA are now furious that the Kings didn't sign him. Make up your damn mind.

Here's a recent tweet from Jason Jones:

Spoke w/ Geoff Petrie, who could not go into detail but said he is "pleased" w/ negotiations w/ JT, looking forward to signing him July 11

Hopefully its not an over the top extension. I like JT and would like to keep him since there are no better options for us out there but the last thing we need to pay him big money which limits our ability to re-sign Reke and Cousins.

I am sure JT will get a reasonable deal from us.

That's a good point. I have not heard a single rumor of JT talking to any other team. If he's not getting other offers then signing him to a 6M+ per year contract in another bidding war against ourselves, when we have the opportunity to match any offer anyway would again hurt us. The market dictates the price. If JT isn't receiving any other good offers, which we don't know but we've heard nothing, then we're again risking overpaying one of our own.

That Chuck contract just looks worse and worse.

I think JT is well worth the $6 million. If we get him fro that price, I am happy with that. He is worth more than Chuck and not quite as much as Thornton. $6-7 million range is legitimate for JT especially considering what average players are getting in the FA these days.

Just because we ****ed up with Hayes, Salmons and Garcia does not mean we have to be below the market for good players that we need to sign or re-sign. What we need to look into is way to cut our loses with these horrible contracts while there is still some chance. Houston might still be interested in Hayes. Salmons might have some interest from a contender considering that the final year of his deal is partly guaranteed.

Of course if we had owners who were financially sound, Salmons would have been amnestied a long time ago but since we don't, we need to be creative in shedding the salary mess somehow. Chuck Hayes might have some interested from Timberwoles as well since Adelman knows how to get the best of him and they were interested in him at MLE money last year.

Having said that, I get the feeling that the front office is not interested in moving Hayes which is a scary thought.

That is a pretty good get for us! He is a very good 3rd big man (though would like more shot blocking either from starters or that role) who can play both PF and C and can be a very solid spot starter on a winning team.

Considering some of the ridiculous salary being thrown around during this free agency period, we could not have done any better.

There are more attractive options still on the table right now for some of the teams. If Indiana decides not to match Hibbert, Thompson becomes an option for them. Dallas and Phoenix are also possibilities who are attending othe matters for the moment.
I hope it will be a front-loaded deal.

just a question i've been wondering and wanted to see if anyone had any guesses. magic turn down the trade of dwightmare for rumored brook lopez, marshon brooks, and multiple draft picks. yet the latest rumor has the 3 way trade of lakers getting d12, cavs getting bynum, and magic getting varejao and picks. now i can understand dwight for bynum but that was nixed due to both not wanting to extend. but why would the magic go for this trade as opposed to the nets trade. only possible thing i can think of is nets and magic are in the same conference or maybe nets draft picks will probably be late due to adding dwight to a loaded roster. but cavs are in the same conference and will get better if you add bynum to irving thus lowering the draft pick. so in the end i just dont see why magics go with the rumored 3 team trade. analysts say you dont trade a super star in dwight for lopez who isnt an allstar, but no one questions them getting varejao? imo lopez/brooks/multiple nets picks>>>varejao/multiple cavs picks

Ask Memphis why they let Gasol go to the Lakers for less than nothing and you might be on your way to an answer. My best guess involves incriminating pictures of key front office personnel and farm animals. ;)
