For those of you that watch the And1 basketball tour, "Seven and Sum Change" is Byrd

Prospect
From today's Bee:

Beyond the familiar faces, 7-footer Rashid Byrd could bring some unexpected flair to training camp, which starts Tuesday and leads into the exhibition opener Oct. 9 against Seattle at Arco Arena.

Byrd, 26, who played at Eastern Oklahoma State Community College and made a 2005 showing in the Seattle SuperSonics' summer league, enters with the underground fame of having played on the And1 basketball tour. He's an athletic big man (7-foot-1, 240 pounds) who was dubbed "Seven and Sum Change" on the street-ball tour and hailed for his dunking repertoire.

Seven and Sum Change? Lord, grant me strength. I am simply not impressed with the vast majority of And1 players.

Streetball is practically a diffenret sport than organized ball. I can be blown away by guys athleticism and creativity in one setting then be overwhelmed by what a knuckel head is in another. (Rafer Alston/Skip to Mylou comes to mind)

They are just different. But in the end being a stand out in the AndOne tour means very little in terms of NBA potential. I can name half a dozen hall of famers who would have been a perfect fit for the AndOne had it existed in their day, but I cna also name a half a dozen more who would never have even gotten a look.

Precisely. And I, as King fan, am not that excited about one of the streetballers possibly becoming a King.

:)

If a guy is over 7 feet tall and can't even make unopposed dunks, then I don't think he should present himself as a basketball player.

Wasn't Rafer Alston one of the strongest of the And1 group?

At least he comes with a nickname.

Don't all the streetballers have nicknames? A nickname, IMHO, should actually be SHORTER and easier to say than your real name. "Seven and sum change" just doesn't trip lightly off the tongue. Why not just call him "Tall guy"?

hey guys yesterday rashid, green and shakur were all shopping for shoes in folsom mall the nike store and i had a pic w/ them :-)

Rashid played briefly in China, I found this article from SLAM that mentions him during the writer's tour of the b-ball world in China. This writeup is about a game between Shanxi and Guangdong Tigers. God Shamgod (remeber him?) and Byrd played for Shanxi, while Yi Jianlian played for the Tigers.

The writer's opinion of "Seven Foot and Sum Change" is well, read on:

The atmosphere in the Shanxi arena was pretty electric, owing almost entirely to the presence of Guangdong, who are treated like the ‘96 Bulls here....

There are stringent rules about how much foreigners can play – a total of five quarters per game for both guys combined. It’s not really an issue for Guangdong. Because of their strength, Americans Jason Dixon and Terrance Green are role players. But Shanxi is so weak that they really need Shamm on the floor. His teammate Rashid Byrd doesn’t offer so much and that’s being kind. Actually, he is now a former teammate since he left the squad within two days of this game after a series of disagreements. He is a 7-foot plus center (hence the nickname Seven and Sum Change, which is what he went by as a player for And 1) who has some real skills but not a lot of desire.

When I discussed ‘Shid with his coach he made an ugly face, then made his fingers into a zero and held it up near his temple. Through the transalator he said, “If Rashid listened and played like Shammgod, we would be much better.” No doubt.

.......

Rashid came out and I followed him, figuring it was time to go back. Later I would learn that the team owner – a lunatic who sits on the bench berating the refs and telling the coach when to make subs – was talking the team for over an hour but Rashid told him to **** off and left.

That's not good.

That's REALLY not good.

I have a VERY hard time imagining our signing an unmotivated player who has been compared, unfavorably, to God Shammgod.

On the other hand, this trait of his might actually come in handy! :D Nobody else seems willing to do it...
