Sacramento stays at No. 10; Portland, Seattle rise to top

On the Sacramento surface, everything went as expected.

The Kings, who entered Tuesday's NBA lottery in Secaucus, N.J., in the 10th position for the June 28 draft, were still there after the pingpong ball combinations had fallen. But the Kings' happy medium was nothing compared to the unexpected elation up the coast, where Portland beat the odds to land the top pick and Seattle was awarded the second selection.

The Trail Blazers, who entered in the sixth position and had a 5.3 percent chance of finishing No. 1, will have their choice of Ohio State center Greg Oden or Texas talent Kevin Durant. And the SuperSonics, who face more uncertainty about their future in their city than the Kings, gladly will take the "other" player who is seen as a franchise changer. Atlanta will pick third.

Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie, whose team had just a 1.8 percent chance of winning the first pick and a 2.12 percent chance at No. 2, was glad to have avoided a backslide even if returning to the playoffs might have become even harder in an instantly improved Western Conference.

"I don't feel as good as Portland or Seattle, but I obviously don't feel as bad as Memphis or Boston," Petrie said.

Not only did Memphis enter with a 46.5 percent chance of finishing in the top two yet wind up picking fourth, but the Grizzlies' coaching search might have become more difficult. It was widely believed that Hall of Famer Larry Brown would wind up as Memphis' coach if Oden was coming to town.

Brown already has interviewed with owner Michael Heisley, who is looking to make splashes after his team finished with a league-worst 22-60 record.

"I don't like the draft lottery, never liked it," Grizzlies president Jerry West, who is leaving the organization when his contract ends June 30, told reporters in New Jersey. "It's not sour grapes. I just think it's a terrible system, and it needs to be addressed. Every other league in the other professional leagues, they all draft according to how they finish in the season."

The three teams with the league's worst records -- Memphis, Boston and Milwaukee -- were all disappointed, as the Celtics will pick fifth and the Bucks sixth.

For the Kings, the process of compiling a wish list of talent continues.
Per a rule change this year, draft workouts for teams can't begin until after the pre-draft camp in ends June 4. Still, Petrie and basketball vice president Wayne Cooper spent much of the season scouting on the collegiate level and made a recent trip to evaluate the European scene in anticipation of what Commissioner David Stern called one of the deepest drafts in decades.

Petrie said he likes 15 players and that he would be open to obtaining a second pick via a trade. The Kings do not have a second-round pick.

"If on draft day there happened to be a player there we really liked that we might be able to acquire, we would do that," he said.

As for the first pick, the Kings might be able to add to their front line with the likes of Georgetown center Roy Hibbert or Florida forward Joakim Noah, or maybe expand their point guard contingent should Ohio State's Mike Conley Jr. fall that far.

"I think you can get a good player (at No. 10)," Petrie said. "Whether you can get a great player ... is hard to say."

As for the coaching search, Petrie said he had a formal interview with Kings assistant Scott Brooks on Tuesday. Petrie will meet today with former Kings assistant Elston Turner, the last of a group of seven that included former Miami coach Stan Van Gundy, New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus, Houston assistant Tom Thibodeau and Los Angeles Lakers assistants Brian Shaw and Kurt Rambis.

I wouldn't get my hopes up about Petrie trading up. I suspect he's talking about possibly trading to get a second round selection, or another pick after our #10. But I also think that's just more Petrie talk. It's a lot like saying "both teams played hard, man. Both teams played hard."

;)

"I don't like the draft lottery, never liked it," Grizzlies president Jerry West... ..."It's not sour grapes. I just think it's a terrible system, and it needs to be addressed."
are you ****ting me jerry? you got what u deserved for tanking to the max this season... you wouldnt be saying this if you got number 1

Every other league in the other professional leagues, they all draft according to how they finish in the season.
if this was the case, then some teams would've probably had a 1-81 record, considering how good the top two picks are in this draft...

That is the amusing thing with people complaining about the how that awul lottery encourages tanking -- the NBA is the ONLY one of the major professional leagues that has a system which in any way DIScourages tanking. In every other league, the temptation is much worse since they just go in pure reverse order. Tank like the Grizz, get guaranteed of #1. (the balancing factor being that getting that #1 is only rarely as significant in the other sports as it is in the NBA.)

Oh, sure, Jerry.

Karma in action, folks. Three worst tankers got what they deserved.

Granted, it's still better than what we got...

And wow, that's a lot of picks for Philly.

I heard a rumor he will but I haven't seen anything official.

Georgetown center Roy Hibbert will return to college for his senior season, The Washington Post reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

In April, Hibbert told the Post his odds of returning to the Hoyas were 50-50, and said his projected position in the draft would help him decide. The glut of talented big men coming out for the NBA, including likely No. 1 pick Greg Oden of Ohio State, Joakim Noah and Al Horford of Florida and Yi Jianlian of China, may have convinced Hibbert to continue his college career.

"Do I want to go eight through 14, or do I want to go top three next year?" Hibbert told the Post last month. "That does play a factor in my decision.

... I wouldn't want to be at the end of a bench on an NBA team, not being able to develop and show what I can do, so another year [at Georgetown] would be great, obviously."

Underclassmen have until June 18 to withdraw from the June 28 draft.

Guess he took a look at all the mock drafts and saw himself being projected at the 10 spot with the Kings and didn't like what he saw. :D

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Ah crap, we're screwed at #10!!! Who's left for us out of big guys there, um...yeah, exactly!! Oh well, GP sure has his work cut out for him now. We might as well get ready for another 6'3-6'7 tweener to add to the TEN that we already have! Crap!

Funny, werent we competing with Portland right before season ended on the spot they ended up taking? Great job Kings, as always, bad karma will always equal bad moves. :\ This is grand theft! Portland and Seattle had to business being were they were. THEY ARE NOT BAD TEAMS. Im seriously pissed off at this.

So wait does Petrie mean he wants to trade for another lotto pick or a second rounder?

I e-mailed Amick to get clarification. This is what he said when I asked him Petrie was referring to a 1st or second round pick:

The answer is yes. I think he's going to look into getting another pick of any kind, be it first or second round.

If Petrie likes 15 players, I assume he would work to get another pick in the top 15. But that's just my own crazy logic. Unless of course the 15 that he likes are not the consensus top 15, which is totally Petrie....and most GMs for that matter.

Come on people.....did we have any business getting the top pick and would people be screaming it's not fair?? Doubtful. Portland finished 1 game behind us and Seattle 2 and they got lucky plain and simple.

I think the Lottery is a joke anyway and they should just take the 2 worst teams and flip a coin to see who gets the first pick and everyone else falls in line.

Maybe the 10 for Philly's 12 and 21 (if Philly really likes someone they think will be gone at 12).

We need a star. Flat out. Trading the 10 away fro lesser picks might well net us an extra NBA caliber reolplayer or whatnot, but so what? We can load up on roelplayers and be bad forever. We need a young star, and are already in significant danger of nmot being able to find him at 10. It gets much much aharder the lower you sink.

Better to look to trade our vets away to nab another pick (or two). Especially as you get into the teams in the midteens and up, there are alot of them that might rather have a vet who can help now than a rookie.

Oh my, that really hurts. Just as bad as if we had gotten aced out and sank to 11th.
My sentiments exactly(as expressed in my above post)...it just sucks all the way around. Hopefully GP goes back to his roots and pulls off a couple of shrewd deals with some other teams like back in the day. We sure as hell need SOMETHING to happen, if we just stand pat...Arco will be pretty quiet, and alot less crowded next season.

Thanks kingster. I think Petrie's going to be making a bunch of deals on draft day.

It would be about time, I'm tired of the kings being a quiet team. The blazers made a ton of noise last year's draft and they're much better now than they were then.

I think the lottery's design is barely adequate, but it could be a lot worse.

In most years, tanking isn't a big problem, so the uncertainty about draft order is enough. In unusually weak draft years, it's overkill, but nobody cares very much since there's little at stake. In years with obvious superstars, it isn't enough, and some people will be screaming no matter what the outcome.

I think it performed very well this year. It was a slap in the face to the year-round tankers, yet there were no ridiculous outcomes. I'd have been more upset if Boston and Memphis had gotten #1 and #2 -- or if the Clippers and '6ers had. The NBA lucked out. They couldn't have done much better if they'd rigged it. *cough*

Little consolation for Kings fans, to be sure, but we have nobody but the front office to blame for the last year.

It's interesting looking at these picks. Only 2 centers out of the bunch. Sene is a total ? while Bynum looks to be getting better and better, but is not quite there yet. Six of the above are 6'7 guys that are swingmen (2), forwards (2), or shooting guards (2). One, Fortson, is a PF. 4 out of 10 are busts, 2 are stars - Pierce and Johnson, both of whom are in the 6'7 category. Terry is good. Bynum still working to be good, but probably will get there in a couple of years. I remember the year Pierce was drafted. That's when we picked Jason Williams. Pierce dropped lower than everyone expected.

i dont really see the past picks as relevant. its a whole new group of guys every time. the only thing a gm can do is work em out, and identify their talent as best as he can. otherwise, what are they paying him millions for?
