The charade has gone on long enough. People have been saying for years that the Maloofs might be "tying Petrie's hands" and not allowing him to work. What if he is just a terrible general manager?

From the coaches he has hired to the roster he has assembled, it is clear that he is no longer competent in running a basketball team. The product on the floor is miserable, the coaches brought in are completely incompetent, and the lack of action is pathetic (though sometimes good for the Kings, considering some of the horrid trades he has made).

Petrie's only bright spot is his drafting. So, he should be a scout. Not a general manager.

This team is a mess. The captain needs to go down with the ship.

I agree completely. We've been at the bottom of the NBA for the last five years and Petrie is the person most responsible for this team's putrid state.

Since GP now works for cheap and Smart has been retained on the cheap - let them just switch jobs. Petrie can coach the team he designed for remainder of this season and Smart can take over as interim GM to make various trades and draft selections he needs - resuming his duties as head coach next season. Then, Petire can finally retire from the organization and Bill Walton becomes new Kings GM

Firing is not the issue... any 6 year old can do that. Hiring is the real problem. Given the coaching searches since Adelman left, the brain trust is short a few brains. I would love to be optimistic here. But given the track record of Maloof decisions, expect the worst.

Beno was the pg we needed and John Salmons was a guy we already had. We're using a 5'9" pg to run the team because our sgs and sfs are all chuckers. Just bad.

Sure, GP has not put together a good team for years. Is he not spending money because he has been told not to? Or is he just doing a poor job as a GM?

I honestly think it was that the Maloofs have told him not to spend too much money...

I guess we will have the some sort of answer by the trade deadline. If we pull off more of the same crappy moved of helping teams get under the luxury tax by taking on garbage with some cash coming our way or just sit and do nothing, it pretty much suggests Magoofs are pulling the purse strings.

Petrie has pulled off a blockbuster or 2 in the past but his reputation has to be wearing thin as he has made maybe 1 good deal in 5 years coupled with some absolute stinkers. His FA signings have been disastrous as well which is not helping matters.

Money obviously plays a part in this debacle, but when you look at the team that Petrie has constructed, that all on Petrie. This team is full of low IQ, fundamentally flawed players who don't fit with one another. Do I expect Petrie to build a championship team with the lowest payroll in the league? No, but is piecing together a functioning team with players that complement each other too much to ask? Looking at the Jazz and Pacers, I don't think it's impossible to build a competitive team with a low salary.

this trade deadline was always going to pass with relative inactivity. with an extended date of march 15th, the deadline was pushed into march madness, the most important time of the year for college ball and, consequently, the most important time of the year for nba scouts. on top of that, the offseason really isn't that far away, and most teams will probably go conservative and stand pat, rather than trade for trading's sake, a la golden state and milwaukee...

that said, i give petrie one more offseason and trade deadline before i break out the pitchforks. one more. i'll grant that the kings got a bit unlucky last offseason. i'll suggest that dalembert never wanted to return, and was determined to get a payday somewhere other than sacramento. i'll maintain that the kings were close to snatching andre kirilenko away from russia, but the rewards of playing for a losing team in the nba were not as enticing as playing on top of the world for his national team. i won't excuse trading beno udrih for john salmons and the right to move down in the draft so the kings could pick jimmer. that was too much of a ****-up to let slide. but the rest could just be a case of small town luck...

so petrie's got an offseason to begin righting this ship, otherwise evans might be gone whether the kings want to re-sign him or not (without compensation to all those who would prefer it this way), and cousins could be swift to follow 'reke's lead out the door, and the kings are back at square one after seven years of rebuilding. its time to get smart, GP. and i'm not talkin' 'bout your lame *** excuse for a head coach...

Right now, I am pretty peeved that we didn't draft Biyombo. I had been clamoring for him for a long time before the draft and he's already showing how good he can be and he is still extremely raw. He would have been the perfect piece for our team.

He was allowed to spend 3 million a year on Outlaw. That certainly was a great pickup, wasn't it? Good work, Petrie.

I remember an article saying that he took a huge pay cut a couple years (or more) ago. Never said how much he is getting...of what I remember.

Back then we didn't know that Dalembert wouldn't be retained for a long period. Honestly, drafting Jimmer was a pretty decent decision IMO. But we shouldn't have given up Beno and taken back Salmons for it. Knight would probably have made sense too. Assuming we kept Beno and Daly, any of Knight, Jimmer or Leonard would have been decent picks. Think how simple our offense used to be. Evans driving, kicking out to Casspi or Garcia, or dropping it off to JT. Cousins finding a cutting Beno or Tyreke on a backdoor. Those used to be our signature plays and we ran them successfully many times a game. Naturally our offense was a little stagnant, I admit that, and that was largely Tyreke's fault. But he's now moving the ball a lot faster and more willingly, and I believe that he has developed in that area. Jimmer would provide a very dangerous outlet, which would force teams to not be able to simply pack the paint.

Sure, playing with a fast tempo gets you easy scores, but it also ends up giving the other team more possessions. When you let teams constantly shoot above 50% that's not a good idea. If your defense is good, then you can have a successful running team. There is absolutely no way that you can simply outscore your opponent when you have guys like Tyreke who can't shoot, big guys like Cousins who can't run, and no stretch PF that can hit long shots. Oh, and no SF that can hit a 3 either (other than Garcia). Our team is built to be a halfcourt team that takes advantage of being bigger, with big guys who can also step out to hit the outside shot (but not a 3). But instead of giving that time to grow and find a system that incorporates all our advantages we decided to start the new TNT Sitcom 4 Guards and a Big Guy. How's that pretty woohoo offense is better thing working out for us eh?

The money was available from the Maloofs. Petrie was the one who messed it up.

It is not as if we are not spending money on Salmons, Hickson, Outlaw, etc. If Petrie spent the cheap money on right players that fit then we wouldn't have these problems.

There are people who says we might get a worse GM as replacement to Petrie. Oh well, what is the difference? Petrie shows he is getting worse through the years and there is no indication that he will change course. We might as well gamble on a new GM. We might get lucky.

What organization is going to PUBLICLY announce that you are going to keep a low payroll and try to move the team to Anaheim????!!!


A lot of armchair quarterbacking going on here... He's not perfect but he's also made good moves too.
