finals game 5 (merged)

VF21. You asked for it. Here is a Mark Cuban moment for you after tonight's game. I got this at another (non sports) board.

somebody at some other board said:
WOW mcuban had some explicit H.S.O.'s (Hot Sports Opinions) after the game. Lot's of bleeps. You'll see it on your sports news outlet of your choosing. I see a donation by Mr. Cuban to the NBA's fine coiffer in the very near future.

A reporter asked Mark "Is this the worst loss you have experienced?"

Mark replied "No, my Pee Wee team lost the championship when I was five. Ask me a real fu**ing question."

Wade’s Heroics Have Heat One Win From Title

MIAMI, June 18 (Ticker) -- Dwyane Wade has the Miami Heat one win from an NBA title and the Dallas Mavericks totally at a loss.

In another spectacular performance, Wade scored 43 points and capped a classic contest with two free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining to lift the Heat to a 101-100 victory over the Mavericks in the pivotal fifth game of the NBA Finals.

Counted out a week ago, the Heat became just the second team to win the middle three home games in the 2-3-2 format to engineer a complete reversal of the series and put themselves in position to win the championship in Dallas on Tuesday (9 p.m. ET, ABC).

It simply would not have happened without Wade, who led a stirring comeback with 42 points in Game 3 and did himself one better in Game 5. He worked through a slow start to make 11-of-28 shots and drained 21-of-25 free throws, setting a Finals record.

Wade continues to confound the Mavericks, who had victory in their grasp several times but unraveled with a series of missed free throws and a huge strategic mistake down the stretch.

Playing shorthanded, Dallas used everything at its disposal, including "Hack-a-Shaq." But it still came up one point short.

At both the end of regulation and overtime, the Mavericks had the lead but could not get a grasp on Wade, who made a pull-up banker with 2.8 seconds remaining to force overtime and weaved his way through the entire defense at the end of the extra session.

A jumper by Dirk Nowitzki over Shaquille O'Neal gave the Mavericks a 100-99 lead with 9.1 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Heat inbounded into the backcourt to Wade, who snaked his way through four defenders along the right side and drew a foul from Nowitzki.

After Wade made the first free throw, Dallas coach Avery Johnson signaled that he wanted a timeout -- his last -- after the second attempt. Josh Howard called for it immediately and left the Mavericks stranded as they could not move up to mid-court after Wade drained the second free throw.

Hehehehehe!

Thanks, vj9999!

McCuban? I'm picturing Ronald McDonald with Mark Cuban's head...and it's a really funny visual.

:D

Mark was so pleasant on Letterman when they were up 2-0 and everything was looking rosey for them Mavs. I don't hate him like most here but watching him throw a temper tantrum is always great.

A question for people more familiar with NBA rules than me. I read somewhere else somebody suggesting this:

After Wade made his last free throw, Mavs could have called a timeout (which they didn't have) so it would result in a technical. Heat would get to shoot another free throw, and possibly going up by 2 points, but Mavs would have been able to advance the ball because of the technical free throw.

Is that within the rules?

The outcome of these last 3 games is very simple. Miami superstar D-Wade has stepped up his game and Dallas superstar Dirk hasnt. Wade gets to the free throw line because he drives the paint. Dirk has been settling for outside shots.

Ref’s Have Heat One Win From Title

MIAMI, June 18 (Ticker) --Bennett Salvatore, Joe DeRosa, and Jim Crawford have the Miami Heat one win from an NBA title and the Dallas Mavericks totally at a loss.

It simply would not have happened without the refs in Game 5. Helped by the refs, Wade worked through a slow start to make 11-of-28 shots and drained 21-of-25 free throws, setting a Finals record.

The refs continue to confound the Mavericks, who had victory in their grasp several times but unraveled with a series of missed free throws and a huge strategic mistake down the stretch.

Fixed.

there. Kings players should pull a Wade when shots aren't falling and drive. People, there was a foul on that last play, the only thing the refs got wrong was who it was called on. Harris tripped up Wade, and that in the rule book is normally called a foul. The Mavs fans wouldn't be complaining if Howard/Dirk hit their free throws. Wade hit his. End of story end of game.

Agreed. Wade got fouled twice; Harris got him and Dirk had his hand on Wade's back while he was goin up for the layup.

Also, is Dirk gonna get fined for kicking the ball into the stands after the game? I remember when Webber did it and got fined after that one game when the Kings lost to that goaltending no call.

Stern needs this to go 7 games in order to compete with the Cup. I predict one Dick Bavetta for Game 6, and a Dallas win. Of course, I would prefer that the Mavs win the series. This game's finish was abysmal. A bailout call for Wade, then the bizarre timeout sequence. Even as it happened you could see Johnson motioning for a timeout and signalling that they had two left. I bet Howard (and others) were arguing that they had only 1, he made the TO motion during the debate, the closest ref blew the whistle, and Crawford jumped in from halfcourt to enforce it. I consider Crawford second only to Bavetta in Stern's list of "fixers".

This league has been trivialized and reduced to mere theatre.

No because the Heat would get a technical freethrow AND the ball

Putting a ball into the stands is an automatic ejection now, if Dirk did it after the game shouldn't he be suspended? (I didn't see that, but I did see him kicking everything around him in the entry corridor)

Uhuh, so let me see here. If Howard hadnt choked and made both his free-throws what then? Stern would have come out onto the court and told the refs not to count them?

My God. Some of you people really need to start writing these theories down. Hollywood might be interested... Conspiracy? Poppycock.

As far as the whole timeout thing goes, it was pretty clear. While Wade was at the line, Johnson signaled to Howard that he wanted him to call a timeout immediately after the second shot. Howard misunderstood and called it right then. It was a mistake, a boo-boo, an oops... There was no "bizarre timeout sequence." There was an attempt by Johnson to explain what had happened, but it didn't matter. Once Howard signalled the official for the time out and it was called, it could not be retracted.

As far as Dirk kicking a ball into the stands goes, it definitely should result in some league action. I'll be very interested in seeing what happens.

You have to call that, regardless of the situation. Strange how they called it on Nowitzki but oh well!

Reported by email immediately. I love it. Will they send a link to youtube.com?

I thought Nowitzki caught Wade on the top of the head as Wade elevated toward the basket, but I don't know if that was what drew the whistle.

That was a weak tantrum. If I was a seven foot tall professional athlete that exercise bike would have been through the wall. It looks like he is just playing with it.

well, after lookin at that video, it didn't look like he kicked a ball (my bad) he was just kicking the little streamers coming from the ceiling...lol
Actually they replayed it on ESPN now and Stuart Scott says he punted the ball into the crowd, so it happened. It has to be a suspension if it happened after the game and its an automatic ejection in a game. Any other player except Shaq or Wade in this series and I guarantee it would be. But it won't be, so Cuban, the Mavs whiners and conspiracy theorists can shut up when all he gets is a small fine.

The rest of it = meh. The ball punting...well here is one case where I would prefer the league is INCONSISTENT in the way it enforces that. If he actually punted it into the stands...oh boy. NOBODY wants to see Dirk Nowitzki suspended int he NBA Finals. Overlook it and I doubt they'd hear a peep.
