Worst Coaching Performance of the First Half

The logical choice here would be Larry Brown, who has needlessly utilized 30 starting lineups in coaching his Knicks to a 15-37 record, while also submarining both player and front office alike with his post-game observations. And though we expected the Knicks to at least fight for a lower-rung playoff spot, this was only because we expected Brown to force his mismatched team into overachieving.

The Sacramento Kings, however, should be on pace for 45-50 wins just by playing to their talent level. Yet at one point in late January they were 18-26 and stuck at the bottom of a division they once ruled. Rick Adelman was given several disparate new parts to work with before the season, and he has essentially had to face his first season as Kings coach without Chris Webber (in Philly) or Peja Stojakovic (uninterested until he was traded to Indiana), but this doesn't excuse the way he has coached the team.

Though Bonzi Wells was this team's best all-around player in the first few months of the season, starting him alongside the like-minded Shareef Abdur-Rahim didn't make any sense. Wells is a role player, a strong scorer who doesn't need the ball much to efficiently put up points, but his scoring services are best served coming off the pine. On the other hand, the Kings are 11-1 when second-year guard Kevin Martin scores 20 points, yet Adelman waited until a few days before Christmas (and an injury to Wells) before starting him.

Granted, Mike Bibby hasn't helped with his inconsistent effort or his hair-trigger shooting hand. But the Kings have a roster that goes 11-deep, which makes it all the more puzzling that two or three players a night receive DNP-CDs. The Kings are 24-29 now, 6-5 since Ron Artest donned number 93. Still, they're just two and a half games out of the last playoff spot in the West. Not bad, but they shouldn't have started this poorly.

Oh good grief.

Does this bozo know what Bonzi's main problem was in Memphis? He wants to relegate him to the bench behind the then totally-unproven Kevin Martin? Yeah, that would have made sense.

And just who did he want to start at PF? Kenny Thomas? Yeah, such an upgrade.

A roster that goes 11 deep? Has he even looked at the end of the bench?

I'm sorry but articles like this, full of nothing but inconsistencies and down-right errors, do nothing for me but make me wonder why I pay so much to subscribe to SI.

I'm sure some of the people who want Adelman gone will be very pleased with this article. I'm just a little ashamed I actually took the time to read it.

Yes, there are valid criticisms to be made about Rick Adelman, but this article IMHO doesn't address any of them with anything remotely resembling articulate discussion.

Wow. This writer is an idiot. Does he not know that most teams have 8 or 9 man rotations no matter how deep they are?

I especially liked all the stuff that shows exactly why Adelman had such a tough job being dismissed with a "yeah, but..." approach.

Starting Kevin Martin over Bonzi Wells at the beginning of the season, for example, would have NOT come across to even the most rabid Martin fanatic as being the right thing to do...

I had to look twice to make sure this wasn't some kind of satire piece.

He seems to conveniently ignore injuries to our starters (groin, broken jaw, broken finger, etc) in addition to the comments above.

I wonder who this guy listened to, cuz he certainly didn't come up with any of that by actually watching the team or learning anything about the team. Man I hate that some people earn a whole lot more than me, without being 1/4 as competant as I am at my job. ;)

Whatever else may be said, and regardless of what you think of Adelman, blissfully suggesting that Bonzi Wells should have been brought off the bench (to start the season no less when we looked like we had few options) is just completely ignorant.

Yes! Yes, it does! And I fully expect Mr. S£im to see that and want to use it for his opinion of power rankings.

;)
