Eric Moreland on the Kings/Bighorns merry-go-round

lol WOW! Does Vivek think there is any chance this would work in an NBA game? In the NBA, teams would have no problem getting past half court and then its 2 on 1. Majority of NBA players would be able to attack the rim, even with a center waiting for them, and score or get fouled. Casspi would destroy this like he has done to anthony davis.

Heslip can shoot! How similiar to Jimmer is he?
Heslip can shoot like a mad man but that is basically the only thing he can do, and at 6 foot 1 without having anything remotely close to a point guard skill set or defensive value he seems like he will really struggle in the NBA. but inspite of all that i would like to see him get a chance, for limited minutes as a points provider from the bench, hr can give as shooting we desperetly need and it can't get much worse than Sessions on defense.

I'm so disappointed to hear about whats happening in Reno. As much as I love Vivek and all he's done for us, I worry sometimes he's too focused trying to be innovative and come up with the next greatest idea. This offensive "scheme" sounds like a frustrating pick up game.

Steve Kerr made a career out of a skillset and physical build, that was very similar to Heslip. If he keeps shooting the lights out with a high percentage at as many attempts that he's getting, I think he'll get a chance at some point

Having not actually watched one of their games, which I plan on doing, I can't definitively say how their playing. But more than one source has validated this, no set plays approach to the game. Which if true, and it appears to be true, is pure BS. It's one thing to forget how to play defense, but even in high scoring all star games, they still run plays. I don't understand what they hope to accomplish with this approach, other than develop bad habits. If your goal on the parent team is to promote more ball movement through passing, wouldn't it be a good idea to have your D-League team promote the same idea. Otherwise, what's the point of the D-League team?
If you are ever in the area and want to see the Big Horns let me know, I can always get tickets there. I've only watched them play Santa Cruz because Thompson2 and Curry2 was on that team lol. I only really got to see some of Ndiaya that was it

Same with you Cruzdude. I wouldn't seeing some Big Horns vs the Defenders... Defenders looked good last year

Hi there. Newbie member here lol

As you can tell I want Michael Malone to play Eric Moreland because I truly think he can become a really good player for this team in Sacramento

I dont think he should start right away but give him like 20 minutes to start off and once Big Cuz returns play the 2 together and I say watch out Western conference

Just curious what your thoughts are

Look back in the threads from around Summer League and you'll see a LOT of us really wanted the Kings to sign Eric Moreland. I don't think he's ready for 20 minutes, but I do think there's a chance for him to earn a regular spot in the rotation.

And welcome to KF!

  1. Id love to see him play some minutes depending on matchups and if/when a big gets into foul trouble (JT) or not being effective ( looking at you Landry and Hollins) or just need extra size on the court

I agree, if JT and Carl are in foul trouble (very likely) and Hollins has one of his "Ryan Hollins First Quarter Special"s (also very likely) I'd like to see the kid get some minutes. What's to lose?

The game? The game will either have to be totally out of range winning or losing.

I think if Michael gets his head out of his butt Moreland wont be going back to Reno anytime soon but he will if management sees him continuing to not play
Sorry, but I see no reason for that kind of comment.

Eric Moreland WAS NOT NBA ready when he came into the NBA. By shuttling him back and forth between Sacramento and Reno, they're at least giving him more of an opportunity to step on a court and play, something that wouldn't happen if he were sitting at the end of the Kings bench.

It's pretty obvious you're here because you're a Moreland fan. Well, for most of us here it's about the name on the front of the jersey and not the back. We'll root for Moreland and most of us wanted the Kings to get him, but we're not about to pronounce him as the answer to all our problems.

Let him learn to crawl before you enter him in that marathon.

I get it I get it and I agree

Hes a rookie but I became a fan of him during the summer and thought he could fit well with Cuz starting this season and I felt he would get that chance. Since there's not much at that position right now I feel it wouldnt hurt to play him.

I mean this team lost to the Lakers so of course it cant hurt to change it up a little

I think it also helps to practice with the Kings. That zoo in Reno is nothing like what will be expected of him in Sacramento.

Thank you VF21

I just feel he's better than the garbage in the rotation that's out there now without Cousins
JT- One of the best post defenders in the league (shoddy shooting and occasional dumb move be damned)
Reggie Evans- One of the best per-minute rebounders in the HISTORY of the NBA.
Carl Landry- Proven veteran post scorer, fits Malones system (I guess)
Ryan Hollins- The only non-undersized big on our active roster not named JT. Aside from that, a nice guy or something.
Eric Moreland- Underweight rookie. Potential rim protector. Also, in case I haven't mentioned it, an admitted multi-year developmental project.

I hope Moreland pans out as much as everyone else but let's focus on him playing good enough in garbage time to warrant more minutes before we try to pull him up into the rotation, let alone play him beside Boogie for 25 minutes a night.

1) Develop Eric Moreland
2) Evans retires
3) Moreland moves in

1) Journeyman Sessions moves to another team/gets traded
2) Ray McCallum moves in

Even if we don't win NOW, we have a good young core (which includes Cousins, surprisingly)

Comment from an Eastern Conference scout on Reno's Brady Heslip the NBDL's leading scorer at 33.3 pts/gm as reported by Chris Mannix in Sports Illustrated:
"I don't think he is an NBA guy... But he's a product of Reno's gimmicky, amateurish system...No defense being played... They're using the D-League for God knows what reason".

Scout's Take: Brady Heslip
by Chris Mannix

An Eastern Conference scout on Reno’s Brady Heslip, the NBDL’s leading scorer (33.3 points), who is shooting 54.7 percent from three-point range on 15.1 attempts per game.

"I don’t think he is an NBA guy. He’s the best shooter in the D-League, by far. But he’s a product of Reno's gimmicky, amateurish system. It’s run-and-gun and shoot the first open three. He has the leeway to take ridiculous shots that no NBA team would ever let him take. There is no defense being played. The stats are all inflated. Reno is affiliated with the Kings, and for some reason they hired a Division III assistant coach [David Arseneault Jr.] and wanted him to play this system thinking it would draw fans, instead of using a system that will develop players. They are using the D-League for God knows what reason.

"Heslip is feisty, he’s tough, he plays hard and he’s gritty. But he is 6-2, he can’t play point guard and he’s not athletic enough to do it on defense every night. He can dribble up the floor and initiate the offense, but it’s not going to be pretty. A Norris Cole picks him up full court, an Avery Bradley, and he is not getting it up past half court.

"I don’t see him as a call-up. A guy like Jimmer Fredette can get his own shot off the bounce a little better. Jimmer also plays the pick-and-roll a little bit. The real comparison is Troy Daniels, from last year. He played at Rio Grande, which also played that kind of fast pace. His numbers were inflated. The difference is Troy is a legit 6-4, 6-5. This guy is just too small."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Bighorns have essentially become the laughingstock of the NBA. Why? The Kings need big time help especially bench scoring. Moreland gets cycled up to Reno every weekend for their games but if it is an amateurish, shooting free-for-all, what is he going to learn there? He is in uniform on Kings bench for Laker and Rocket games but never gets minutes. Neither is McCallum. What gives? Does no one ask Malone or PDA whats going on up there?

I'll hazard a guess and say the reason they keep cycling up back to Reno is so he remains game-ready and in condition. Do I believe it? Not necessarily, but it's the only thing I could think of that would explain his frequent trips across the state line.
