EARTHQUAKE!!! ... kinda

At about 1:10 p.m. there was a sharp jolt to my house. I actually thought it was a sonic boom, but there wasn't the BOOM part. I just received a phone call from a friend who monitors the USGS Earthquake site ... according to him, we "survived" a 2.1 earthquake.

If any of you want to help me recover, I could use some Kings tickets, perhaps some Kings pillows, some Kings sweatshirts and pants, etc.

It was harrowing. I'm doing my best to cope...

...For those of you unfamiliar with earthquakes, something on the level of 2.1 is about as strong as you falling out of bed. ;)

I was on a golf course near Ferndale/Eureka (Humboldt County) like 10-12 years ago when a pretty big quake hit, I think it was like a 7.2 quake. It knocked me down and the fairway looked like the ocean, rolling waves. Weird experience.

nebs - You're missing the point. (And BTW I'm still not real happy with you for beating me - the #1 seed - in the first round of the playoffs...) ;)

This is about me. I'm trying to buckle down and be a brave little soldier after my harrowing experience. I'm trying to maintain a stiff upper lip amidst all the chaos and confusion. I'm reaching out for sympathy and understanding - and, if I play my cards right, free Kings stuff!

LOL I knew what you were doing, I just had to tell my earthquake story.

Hmm..I've got some extra Peja Babooshkah's that are gathering dust here. ;)

Okay, you can tell your story but don't lose focus about what's really important here... my bravery in the face of eminent peril; my ability to soldier on despite the nerve-shattering terror; my unrelenting devotion to Kingsfans.com that lets me overcome everything else just to stay here and put up the brave front...

I believe I can hear strains of "The Eye of the Tiger" in the background.

Just tell 'em you're too shook up and traumatized to deliver a PlayByPlay tonight. That oughta hit 'em where they live.

I would, but I'll be a brave little soldier... I'll do the PBP, even though my nerves are tattered, my heart is still pounding, and I know I barely escaped total annihilation at the hands of Mother Nature at her most devastating. The "massive" quake was centered a mere 10.4 miles NE of me! It could have been "horrible"!!!

Did you ever get that Kings calendar, VF? If not, you better add it to the list. :)

By the way, you are sooooooooo brave. :p

Somebody probably just felled a decent-sized tree. I'm surprised they detected a 2.5 M quake. Some seismo geek must have a seismometer installed under his aunt' house up there.

Second thought, I'll bet the seismometer was at Oroville Dam. The gain must be set to detect a jelly-filled doughnut rolling off the break-room table.

As I mentioned, my friend monitors the USGS earthquake site...

It was not a tree falling. It was an earthquake and I'm lucky to be alive.

Thank you, 6th, for recognizing just what a brave little soldier I'm being...it's not easy, you know.

BTW - I have it on very good authority that the calendar, while not actually in my possession quite yet, has been acquired. :D

kingsgurl87 - Your link won't work for people who aren't AOL users. ;)

As far as my earthquake having anything to do with the earthquake in Asia that caused tsunamis, I don't think there would be a connection. The quake here was centered on a small localized faultline.

VF! You are oh so brave! ;) Thank God you're safe. I hope the forest with all the little creatures wasn't damaged much. I'm sure you've done your rounds for your all the little creatures. Bless you! :)

Maybe we can all get together and make a Kings Earthquake survival pack for VF ;)

You're my hero VF! It must have been hard to cope with. How are the squirrels doing?

I am, indeed, a brave little soldier as are all my furry minions...

Bravest of all, however, is my marvelous Emperor Maximilian, who slept through the whole traumatic experience...

Good idea, The Freak. The survival pack has begun, along with a little something for The Princess........just on general principle. :D

Brave soldier, my pitootie! VF21 has turned into the biggest wussie in northern California. 2.5 M indeed. A modest-sized pine cone probably fell on her roof.

LOL.....you old grump. You are just jealous because you are not having an earthquake survival party. ;)

That must have been a sugar pine cone!

My geology prof at Cal said you don't usually feel anything under a 3.0/2.5... so good senses, vf!

You could be some fuzzy superhero with super senses... Maybe ppl can help you come up with a name at this party of yours. ;)

Quick Dog is right on the money! Surviving a 2.5 will only get you a KObe jersey as far as I am concerned. Don't wast my bandwith for anything under 3.5! Bah!

Here's a bit of trivia on earthquakes. Three of the 4 deadliest natural disasters ever recorded were earthquakes. The other was flooding in Bangladesh in 1970.

July 5, 1201 - Syria & Egypt, upwards of 1 million deaths according to historical records.

January 23, 1556 - China, 800K deaths.

July 28, 1976 - China, 650K deaths (day I was born, don't look at me...)

So glad I am not the only one who looks up disaster stuff on the Net...

I am starting a relief fund vf21...warm blankets...canned food....peja bobbleheads...you know all the necessities!

I was involved in the field investigation of the Oroville Earthquake of 1975. It think it was a 5.9. I was calling the office from a pay-phone near Paradise, CA when the people in the office were watching a bank of seismographs for aftershocks. There were field seismometers all around the Oroville area.

Anyway, I was at the epicenter of a shallow 3.1 aftershock when it occurred. I felt it of course, but I'm not sure anyone else did. The phone booth felt like it had been hit by a runaway shopping cart. I was also at the epicenter of a 5.0 while laying on a bed at the motel. That event was interesting. Everything in the room made noise. The building rocked and rolled. The pool washed over the edges. A 5.0 can be felt and heard.

2.5 M.

Ha, a Kobe jersie!

Signed, The Grump
