Doug Christie

I was thinking about possible coaches and Doug Christie came into mind. He is familar with Mike Bibby and Brad Miller's game, knows and has been in good offenses, and also is a defense-minded person. What do you guys think of Doug Christie being our coach?

I would welcome Doug's presence on the sideline as an assistant coach but being a head coach without any prior experience is difficult to justify. Same idea with Pippen...no experience, no gig at the head coaching position without some tutelage under a Popovich or a Jackson. But bring Doug on as an assistant and I'll be totally supportive of that.

But then again, would Jackie allow Doug to divert his attention away from their clothing line back to the hardwood?

Common thing with all departures (vlade, c-web, doug, bjax, peja) in the last two/three years is that they are still very connected to the sac community...not with the kings organization....is the coincidence?

I wouldn't expect most of them to connect with the Kings organization since C-Webb, BJAX, and Peja are still all playing with another team. I guess you can make a case with Vlade...since he's in the Lakers front office.

I was just thinking about who has a defensive-minded reputation and also thought of Doug. But only if he were to be an assistant, I'd welcome that. I agree with you, I think he needs some experience if he were to be a head coach, but if he were to be an assistant coach, I'd welcome that.

Just no. Doug was always a bit of a strange one. Ok for aplayer maybe, if everybody accepts you. As a head coach? And with zero experience? Just very hard to see. (If he becomes coach, does he spend all game long raising his fist into the air? :p )

As for the rest -- here is a new hypothesis. The "classic Kings", the lovable Kings team from the early part of the decade that inspired such a passion...well, I'm not sure the Maloofs themselves share that passion. Get the distinct feeling that while those teams are justly revered in Nor Cal, that the Maloofs almost feel anger toward them. Disgust for not having won it all. They certainly have shown not a drop of non-forced sentiment as they have dismantled that whole crew, and I get the feeling they may want a completely fresh start. A clean break from those "losers".

I think as an assistant, sure. He's smart and played good D - seemed to be a decent floor leader. In no way would I consider anyone for the head coaching job who hasn't been, as a minimum, a long-term assistant with some of the best coaches of today.

But seeing DC on the sideline in some manner sometime in the future would be OK with me.

Would he still signal to Jackie, or would she be sitting close enough to him to not require that? :)

That's a very interesting hypothesis and it really cuts against the grain of conventional thought. I always believed that Petrie was good at scouting those type of players, the Maloofs enjoyed an aesthetically pleasing style, and that Adelman could adapt to any collection of talent. I felt the whole organization worked in concert. But perhaps the Maloofs did despise those losers. For all their talk about humble beginnings and sweeping warehouses, they have been extremely blessed and extremely pampered. I would not be shocked if they have a very hard time accepting the shortcomings of others. They are short, dumpy playboys with little athletic ability (well, Phil was a good athlete), and may not understand how these players, who have been "given" so much, cannot see them to a championship. It's their sole business where they cannot directly effect outcomes. Even in the record or movie business they can apply proven techniques to insure success. Not so with the Kings. It is probably quite frustrating.

I'll compare it to my football team, the Cowboys. It took Jerry Jones about 15-18 years to truly mature as an owner. That process was retarded a little because he did have so much immediate success, but he had to fail, blatantly and completely fail, in order to become content with surrounding himself with good football people and having a competitive team. The losses still kill him, but he seems to have accepted that if you draft well, are smart in free agency, and have a solid staff, eventually things are going to work out for you. Look at the Steelers. They could have fired Cowher years ago, switched back to a 4-3, built a dome and a assembled an offense like the Colts. But it all worked out. The Maloofs may still need to learn that lesson. Unfortunately, it might come at our expense. I just pray that the Maloofs don't hire the basketball equivalent of Barry Switzer (Billy Donovan by the way).

I really like the guy as a fair player, but not as our coach, like Bricklayer said. zero experience. but you never know whats possible.. although I doubt little miss Jackie will ever leave his side. ::sighs::

I've seemingly been disagreeing with you a lot lately but I'm afraid you might be right on the money here. But I really hope not.

Just a hypothesis, and I really should have put a "what if" before it.

Nonetheless, one of those hypotheses that you come up with to fit the available data, and it would explain a lot of the Maloofs actions, attitudes, and statements.

When does the Darrick Martin for coach thread begin???

Come on people, be realistic.....we don't need to suggest that every player from our past be brought back to coach.

Kenny Smith...

Kenny Smith. Well, he has the public personality to fit what the Maloofs say they want. I wonder what it would take to lure him away from his desk job sitting next to Sir Charles?

Yeah, I've been thinking about Kenny too. He's got the Sacramento connection, people have always said he's due for a head coaching or executive position...

He's competitive, he's smart, he's won championships. But his achilles heel is a lack of experience. Could he put it together for the Kings?

Er...he inspires very little confidence as anything but a goof.
