[Rumor] Domas trade watch 2026

Came across a KC clip yesterday and while I don't often agree with him, was hard to not agree here.
He was ripping into Perry about the direction. This is the same Kings BS we've dealt with for years.
Do you want to rebuild? Sell Sabonis
Do you want to try and get better? Go buy players.

But doing nothing is not a tactic. What we paid for Sabonis or Demar is a sunk cost. We all seemed to understand that when it came to selling Keon to dump Schroder. But when it comes to Demar/Sabonis we can't grasp that?

Look at the cap space teams this summer. The amount of teams are shrinking, and the want for a player like Sabonis who doesn't defend the rim and can't get his own in crunch time (making 45+ a year) is not going to change.

I appreciate Sabonis, but the time to move off him was yesterday. The time to pick a direction was 1 year ago when we moved Fox. But we all know where this is going with Hunter and refusing to sell. Pray for Peterson, cut the tank short, and back to the play-ins until Peterson leaves in 5-6 years.
Really can’t disagree with this. Something tells me the org is going hybrid rebuild after hopefully landing a top 3 pick. Everyone knows DDR and Westbrook and Lavine can’t be part of this going forward, but stuck with Lavine, but Domas does have to go in the Summer. He’s going to keep this team in the play in race and no more. Need a couple of years at least to hit it out of the park in the draft. Domas needs to be on a team that thinks it can make a playoff run.

I really think teams are looking at that contract and just aren’t buying he can lead them to a deep playoff run.

If what they were offered at the deadline wasn't enough, I don't think its going to change in the summer.. Teams are desperate now, in the summer they move to the draft/Free Agency.

I'm now fully convinced the plan is going to be get a top 5 pick, and go for it next year. They are going to pray for Peterson, but be happy with Kingston Flemming or Mikel Brown Jr when we inevitably aren't in the top 3. Maybe Demar is gone due to cap reasons, Hunter will get an extension. Next year we will be sold -

Flemming/The next FA Schroder
LaVine/Monk
Hunter/Nique
Keegan/Cardwell
Sabonis/Maxime

And they will say look kings fans, explosive young PG, shooters around Sabonis, a real forward with Keegan, a younger bench with fan favorite Monk still around. We don't need a multi year tank, we already had the pieces! Upgraded beam team! And we will have another 35 win season while Vivek raises season tickets prices another 12%. rinse and repeat. Wish I wasn't so pessimistic but we've seen this too many times as kings fans.

I pretty much agree, only I wish the starting lineup ends up being Cardwell next to Sabonis and Hunter off the bench with Keegs at the 3 spot. Sabonis needs Cardwell next to him on defense.

James Ham said the Kings were going to have to use draft capital to move their players with big contracts. If true, I’d rather wait for LaVine’s deal to expire or use his expiring deal in another trade this summer
I don't get the urgency to move LaVine. He's trash but hes not hurting the tank, hes helping it. And he expires next year, we should be thinking of buying him out by this time next year.

But who else needed picks to move? Demar? Just buy him out, sunk cost not worth picks for 10 million cap hit next year.
Sabonis? Reports we got offered expiring + pick from Washington and Toronto was offering Barrett + 2nds. So that can't be right.
Monk? Again not sure whats the rush. hes a fan favorite, keep him till next deadline and with 1 year left hes easier if we want to move him.

Ham also said the Toronto deal was still very much alive. Not sure hes much of a source anymore.

The 2 biggest other contracts are Hunter/Keegan who we don't want to move. So

The only thing you got wrong was the next Schroeder coming off the bench

If Kings get Barrett a 1st and shave some salary that is a decent haul for Domas. Kings fans severely overrate Domas and his value.
While I think the Zubac trade was a gross overpay he does hold more value than Sabonis despite being less talented due to his size and skill set, Barrett level player (I would prefer someone else) and a unprotected first is worth it for Sabonis he's been exposed badly in the playoffs /play in to be worth more.

Agreed. All of these immovable contracts were signed or traded for by Monte.

Instead of giving up draft capital to move them, the best thing to do may be to embrace the tank until next season, and hope we hit it big in the next 2 drafts. When these horrid contracts comes off the books by expiration, we may be ready to compete.

Sorta? Depends if they re-up Hunter or not.

You should be happy though, they got off the Keon decision and cleaned the last year of the Dennis contract. So all of a sudden, all we have in 27 is Keegan/Domas/Monk and the rookies on the books. WIth $85 mil in expirings after next season (LaVine/DDR $10 mil buy-out/Hunter)

All Dennis was guaranteed in 2027 is $4.3 million. If they re-up Hunter he's going to cost a lot more than that. If they don't re-up Hunter, we just traded one of our best young players and a future second round pick to save $4 million in cap space for 2027 which is highly unlikely to even matter since, as you point out, there's another $80 million worth in cap space already coming that same summer.

The dust has settled, IMO this was nothing more than a panic move.
They didn't want to watch Keon leave in free agency, and after the way they buried him and opted him in he was never resigning.

This move added 10.1 million to our salaries next year, pushed us into the tax which means we are for sure going to panic dump someone to avoid the tax next year.

Perry panicked, and I'm sure Vivek wanted him to buy a player. Boom welcome Hunter who "has all the pillars doug and Perry talk about" lol.

I guess there is supposed to be a plan in place, but every move makes it seem like the organization doesn’t know how to implement the plan.
