Did Lakers throw game?

Just got done watching the Lakers and Blazers, and I'm pretty sure LA does NOT want to face Portland in the playoffs, because they did everything in their power to lose that game. Down by 1 point, Bryant, an 80-something % free throw shooter, misses both. Then Fisher, an 86% free throw shooter, clanks 1-2 to tie the game with 4 seconds left.

On the next possession, on a borderline desperation 3 by Webster, Fisher inexplicably grabs him by the elbow and sends him to the line, where Webster hit all 3 for the win. Coming out of the timeout, with all the brain farts and stupid plays that had just occurred, Bryant and his goons come out of the timeout smiling and not seeming to care.

And the icing on the cake, is that LA has one chance to tie the game with a 3, and they draw up a play... for Pau Gasol behind the arc.

Seriously Lakers? I understand you're afraid of Portland cuz you've beaten them once in the last 5 years on the road... but damn, that was just embarassingly obvious.

Why on earth would the Lakers throw the game? They still have something to play for.

They're not going to catch the Cavs, and the Mavs aren't going to catch them. I think avoiding a difficult first round opponent is just a tad more important to them than home court against the Magic in the finals, should they meet.

Something doesn't seem right... I can't believe Lakers would like to play against San Antonio, rather than Portland? I personally think that San Antonio is playing more and more better lately.
On the other hand, everything looked like a thrown game tonight...

Why would it be? And, anyway, I agree with Peja: San Antonio still has a better shot at beating Los Angeles than Portland does.

Because teams that lose in the first round almost never make it to the finals.

And while the Spurs have a better shot, the Thunder don't.
That'd be fine, if losing to the Trailblazers moved Portland ahead of Oklahoma City, but it didn't. All it did is give Portland a chance to move ahead of the Thunder, which they would have had, anyway, when they play tomorrow night.

Whereas if Portland lost to LA, they would be 1.5 games behind the Thunder, and even if they beat them tomorrow night, they'd still be a half game behind.

Not buying it, sorry; I don't believe that the gd lakers think that there's any team in the western conference that can beat them. I think that they have tunnel vision on the Finals, and that they totally care about having homecourt.

As much as I hate the Lakers, I have to give them a little more credit than that. The Blazers have given the Lakers fits, especially when they play in Portland. Just because they have tunnel vision on the finals, doesn't mean that they don't want to ensure the easiest route TO the finals.

Did you watch the game? Specifically, did you watch the last 45 seconds or so? There was just something... odd about the way it ended, especially that foul on Fisher on a running 3 by Webster that was well guarded by Kobe and had very little chance of going in. And afterwards, they weren't even phased by the loss, and Kobe didn't have his little pissed-off face. It was just business as usual, walking off the court. Something just didn't add up.

And what makes the Lakers even think the Magic will make it to the finals? The team they should be worried about is Cleveland, and they've already lost that battle. The Lakers are not playing for ANYTHING anymore in the regular season, as evidenced by their 3-6 record in the last 9 games.

I was at work until the last five minutes of the fourth quarter, but I did watch that; I got no sense from what I saw that the lakers were trying to lose.

If they were hell-bent on losing that game, why grab the offensive rebound that lead to the foul on Fisher? That kind of defies the purpose of losing the game, doesn't it?

Just a thought...wouldn't they want to build some confidence going into the playoff by winning team like Portland.

Who knows...

Can anyone remind me of those rare teams that overcame a first round loss to make the Finals, after they were already eliminated?

That was supposed to be heavy sarcasm. I guess I should have included a  afterwards. I was just baffled at the thought of a team, even one as cocky as the Lakers, planning solely for the finals, without first thinking about the first round. Kind of like researching universities for your 3 year-old before picking a pre-school...

They didn't throw the game. They're just playing like s*** the last 15-20 games and I hope it follows them to the playoffs.

/thread.

Even if you accept the premise that the lakers are trying to avoid a tougher first round matchup, which I don't, if anything, that game showed that the Trailblazers are far more interested in avoiding the lakers than the lakers are with avoiding the Trailblazers.

This.

With the injuries and the laissez faire attitude that has long been a part of the Laker tradition (at least for the last decade), they haven't been playing well. I think they're 3-6 in their last nine. Might have the most talent, top to bottom, but they play like they know that they have the most talent, instead of proving it every night. Hope they keep that up, because the Spurs can send them home in the first round (even though I guess they're gonna draw the Zombie Sonics first).

I'm kind of baffled you think the #1 seed in the west and defending champion is intentionally throwing games in the final minute to avoid playing a partiuclar first round opponent. That in itself is really far-fetched.

The metaphor is also way off. Its more like researching universities before the kid takes the SAT. If he's smart and gets good grades its not too presumptuous to think he might get into a good school. Likewise a team that's won six straight western conference playoff series and all pretty convincingly wouldn't be presumptuous in thinking they have a good shot to make the finals again...and thus plan accordingly.
