Fran Vazquez, the Magic’s international man of mystery, was already a longshot to ever play a NBA game in Orlando. Now, the odds might be an off-the-charts mathematical improbability.
Vazquez, the Spaniard who stiffed the Magic following the 2005 NBA Draft so he could play in Europe, is represented by agent Marc Cornstein. Cornstein, you might remember, is embroiled in quite a messy controversy these days with the Magic.
Cornstein is irate with Magic GM Otis Smith for leading his client, Darko Milicic, to believe that Orlando was intent on bringing him back next season. Milicic, a restricted free agent, was fully expecting a contract offer from the Magic on July 1, especially after hearing Smith say for weeks that he was a top priority this summer.
As it turns out, Smith was merely throwing other teams off his scent as he pursued and landed Rashard Lewis, the most coveted free agent available this summer.
Landing Lewis left Milicic out on the curb. The Magic withdrew their qualifying offer to Milicic, 22, Tuesday night, meaning he’s an unrestricted free agent capable of signing with any team.
Cornstein tore into Smith Tuesday, questioning his character and saying that Milicic will never play another game with the Magic. Their camp foolishly asked for a contract starting at $10 million a season, causing this rift. But they believe they were lied to, deceived and played for fools.
Those kinds of things aren’t usually forgotten. Cornstein is among the most powerful and respected agents in the business, but he isn’t likely to let this sleight pass anytime soon.
And the trickle-down effect could have reach all the way down to the 6-foot-11, 240-pound Vazquez. After reportedly telling a Spanish news agency last week that he wanted to play in the NBA, Vazquez came back this week and reaffirmed his commitment to his professional team in Barcelona, Spain. Who does this guy think he is … Billy Donovan?
I’ve always been of the opinion that Vazquez will never play for the Magic, not after the way he embarrassed the organization two years ago. Now, after the Magic infuriated his agent, it’s a certainty that Vazquez will continue to reign mainly in Spain for the foreseeable future.
