Darko flips out

I would have to say Darko may be the leading candiate now for nutcases in the NBA surpassing our own Ron Artest. i mean come on its one thing to dislike refs and call them names but, to say the things he said sexually about their mothers and DAUGHTERS. Darko is a worthless trash IMO.

What an ***!
However, before we condemn him, I'd like someone else who speaks Serbian to verify the accuracy of the translation. I have a friend who is Serbian-American, but he doesn't speak the language well enough to translate accurately. His mother does, but I wouldn't ask her to translate it if it were as foul as it probably is. Anyone else have a resource that can help verify?
And... I don't care if those kinds of insults are common in Serbia - and thus less serious than they may appear to us. Those sentiments (if true) reflect a person who has gone over to the dark side. They have dehumanized their enemy, and are capable of horrible things.

don't bother. It is true

What Darko did was wrong and shows immaturity, but swearing over thear is alot more explicit and what he said as harsh and idiotic as it sound if translated is just a figure of speech. Not that I condone his outburst, but in the heat of the moment he was caught and asked for a comment after they just lost a close overtime game in which he was robbed by the refs.

I've said words similar to that in a heat or argument. Heck even in a casual conversation. Even my wife (who is American) jokes about it how my dad's way of saying a hello is to throw an expletive in there somewhere.

Wow that is some rant.

As far as "dehumanizing the enemy" - I'm all for that and I have no problem with working up a good hard hatred/contempt for the opponent.

Whining about refs though... has always turned me off from fans or players. I hate it. If Darko was talking about an opponent who was flopping or cheating it would be better for me. The hard words and passion are fine with me... the whining isn't.

One thing I like about Artest, I never saw him cry to the refs... not once. never. He hands the ball over and trots to the other end of the court. I love that about him.

I think something is lost in translation. Reading it transcribed is appalling but just watching and listening he didn't sound anything like I would if I were saying that in English. I'm not excusing the comments, but perhaps those are more common insults over there? It was a war torn nation for most of his childhood and the attrocities going on during their civil war reflect the kind of things he had to say.

MY biggest thing is. If this were Artest. it would be all over ESPN and NBATV and both websites as well as any sports website as the top story. Its not even a blurb on those sites. good job media.

It was said in Serbian, by a bit player. No comparison at all from a media standpoint to a star player ranting in English so you can put the clip up of a recognizable face with all the bleeps and beeps.

Meh. He was just mad. I think the sexual parts are a little weird, but I'll chalk that up to a cultural thing. I go on expletive-laced rants all the time, and I don't think I'm Artest-level crazy. But then crazy people always think it's everyone else who's the problem... :D

Not to turn it into a political discussion (and I am only quoting your comment and my post is not in any way directed at you :) ). I think it is a large misconception of Serbian players growing up in a situation where they were affected with atrocities. Sure country was war torn, but Serbia it self besides NATO bombings saw very little of it.

Peja on other hand has a valid excuse being from a war torn region in Croatia.

I am not offended by Darko's comments in any way on a personal level. It was heat of the moment reaction which sounds alot worse in translation. I am offended that it is not a very professional way to behave. If he was expressing that anger in locker room to vent out, more power to him. But to spew it out for everybody to hear just makes you a sore loser.

If he didn't suck against Russia a day before and play like a #2 pick, the fact if they were robbed by refs against Greece would have been irrelevant.

As for Artest. If Artest got into a ref bashing in a non NBA game as his first real outburst and sign of character, it would not have gotten alot of media attention. If Darko does it again and if he does it in NBA, I'm sure medai would be all over it.

Darko is a complete idiot, as a player and as a human being. The unholy triumvirate of Jaric (bad), Milicic (idiot) and Gurovic (17/50 shooting, 1 assist) destroyed this team and refs were just happy to help them self destruct.

As for the rant, OK so in Serbia swearing is juicier then in American English, but it is still something that betrays lack of any substance and a case on part of the person going on a tirade, same like in USA.

And enough about the war already. My kid brother lived through war in both Croatia and Bosnia, then got bombed by NATO in Serbia in 99. He is still well adjusted and perfectly functional professional. Millions of people went through worse crap in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia then Darko did in small town (and wealthy) Vojvodina.

It's one thing praising people like Djokovic or Jankovic/Ivanovic who overcame huge odds to become elite players and completely another excusing an idiot for being an idiot because he comes from a country that went through war and dissolution.

If Artest went on a tirade like this he should be vilified and so should Darko. I don't care for either.

Well, you chose a very bad example to make your point.
Pedja moved to Belgrade very young (almost as soon as the war started) and from there he went to Greece. He's been playing professionaly since 16 and even though he had to leave his home, he replaced it with a better one and a much better life (Pedja himself says that nothing ties him to his birthplace any more).

Most of people who grew up in Serbia witnessed the horrible downfall of the society, its morality, economic situation and of course the bombing in the end.

"Serbia it self besides NATO bombings saw very little of it."
I actually think that Serbia saw most of any of the countries involved, as it was a part of all 4 wars and under Milosevic's dictatorship.

As for Darko, comparing him to Artest is ridicilous. Most guys in Serbia swear and say things much worse than what he said here. It was also very clear that he was beaten up pretty badly on a couple of important possessions towards the end of the game and the refs didn't do anything. I have absolutely no interest in defending him, but he is not crazy, just angry and very primitive.

First one question - why everything bad that happens in Serbia or anything bad that some Serb does has to be attached to the war?!What the heck,I can't understand that?Darko's behaviour showes us that his parents missed to teach him some important lessons about nice manners and his vocabulary. His is typical kind of a punk. Not so while ago he said that he likes to come home, hang out with his friends,go get drunk(wasted),ride on a bonnent of a car, etc. He is a regular punk with some talent for the basketball and he succed to become a basketball player.
And Pixi's point was right.Shooting in the school with the gun have never happened in Serbia for example. And there weren't any wars in USA lately so how would you explain that then?Don't get me wrong,I am not trying to say how americans or serbs are good or bad guys,I am trying to explain you that you should let the war go.What can come as a product of a war are traumas, diseases, etc. bad language-no way!
Cheers!

edit:Also, that swearing is common over here among the punks, jerks, etc. You can't hear it on a TV,newspaper or something like that.Translated to english it has harder meaning just like some english words when they are translated to serbian

I used Pedja as an example since at least he had to be relocated and lost his home (by choice or not). I think people of the whole region were affected. Some more than others, but I wouldn't put Darko in the same category with what I had to go through during the war in Sarajevo ;)

I honestly don't want to make it political and will agree that everybody suffered, but some did more than others (Darko included in others category :) ). And I am saying this as a Darko fan. I'll still try to watch his games next year and want him to succeed.

Honestly? If you played sports, and the refs VERY OBVIOUSLY couldn't give you a break, and kept on giving you unrealistic calls, you'd completely understand his outburst. I've had that, so it isn't just him being a psycho, simply couldn't handle his emotions.

Of course, dissing the officials is one thing, but saying the things he said is completely unacceptable, immature, and shameful.

I can't believe he got their families into this.

I bet he'll realise he did the wrong thing though...That was too harsh

Yeah he had an emotional outburst, I sorta know how that could happen when the refs are killing you but come on. He'll realize he was wrong because the things he said are disgusting and classless.

I'm all for calling the refs names in the heat of passion. I mean, I could pretend it's offensive, but I've done it myself, and I'm a pretty civilized guy. Whining about the refs, however, is just irritating; it's like watching a spoiled kid act out in a big way to get what they want from their parents.

But the part I find totally inexcusable is working rape threats into his tirade. Call it culture, or a war victim, or a disappointed player after a big loss... however you spin it, this guy is a loser.

But I'm still waiting to hear from someone who speaks Serbian if the rape threats really were part of his rant, or if that was another inaccurate translation.

Use that word "rape" in a sentence that Darko said and I'll tell you if it's true.I just checked and it has a few meanings in Serbian that aren't so close.

At this point, with the topic becoming more an argument of semantics, it just doesn't seem like it pertains in any way, shape or form to the NBA any longer. For that reason, I'm closing the thread.
