Dallas/San Antonio - game 7

How can you not call the Mavs underdogs against a fantastic Spurs team and a near 70-win team in Detroit?

Okay, a couple of things:

1. Sixty-four is not "near seventy." The Pistons were a "near 70-win" team only in the same sense that the Kings were a "near 50-win" team, or Golden State was a "near 40-win" team.

2. You and your team can tell yourselves whatever lies you want to if you think that it will help motivate you... but, when you're far and away one of the top-three teams in the league (and six wins better than the fourth-best team counts as "far and away"), and universally acknowedged as one of the only four teams in the league with a legitimate shot at the championship, then you're not an "underdog," no matter how you try and spin it.

Championship contenders don't get to call themselves "underdogs."

What a great series! Honestly, despite having serious problems with several Spurs players (Finley, Horry especially), I was rooting for the Spurs because 1) I sincerely like & respect Tim Duncan, and can't seem to root against him UNLESS they're playing the Kings and 2) Mark Cuban really bugs me, and the sooner his team exits the playoffs the less I have to see him.

That said, at least we know we won't end up with a Detroit/San Antonio final series, so we'll go from there. Go Phoenix!

I'm happy Dallas won. Dirk is a beast and was amazing in game 7. I'll be happy to see Dallas win it all. I don't care that Sac is supposed to have a rivalry with Dallas, the Mavs are an awesome team this year. Avery Johnson, Dirk, Harris, Howard...I'd rather see those guys win than SA or Detroit, again. Makes the playoffs a lot more fun.

People on this board were sleeping on the Mavs a bit all year -- think still thinking of them in the old sense when we used to clash with them. But you can see how far they've come in toughness, rebounding, size -- they look like a real contender now. And their superstar is coming up huge in the big games too. Be interesting to see what happens if they run into Detroit, who mihgt have a couple of defenders who actually could bother Dirk (Rasheed, Prince).

I am at a complete loss for words. I've been a fan back when we had Ro Blackman, Derek Harper. I thought we could do it tonight but I was having that mentality of "expect the worst, hope for the best." I was there with the bad times - Hell I thought Cherokee Parks was THE ANSWER for our woes in the 90's!

This win right here is the greatest win in Mavs history - words cannot explain how I feel right now so I'm going to stop writing and just keep celebrating.

I'll leave with this: if it's true that championship teams rise up and overcome the road atmosphere, a great basketball team, and the HORRIBLE and absurd calls the refs made tonight (I haven't even dug up the stats yet on FTA's and Fouls called) - then this team is really getting my hopes up.

Cheers to ONE OF THE BEST 7 GAME SERIES IN HISTORY!

Don't give a game away to Phx like the last two opponents did. Please. Kill them dead. Don't take anything for granted.

No one can bother Dirk. The man is unstoppable. It's the German within.

Drat. :(

Phoenix is gonna get pummelled. Too bad, because the thought of Cuban's mug during the NBA Finals makes me nauseous.

Suns will make it tough for them. I think the Mavs will win, but the west is just so balanced this year. Poop Finley. Thought he was walking into a title only to watch his old team finally beat the Spurs!

I really don't think Phoenix will get pummeled. We split the season series between the 2. No one on the Mavs are taking Phoenix lightly either - Avery won't let them.

OT of game 7, you can't ask for more than that. I hate that Mavs won, now I have to see Cuban again:( and I have an image of Hasselhof every time I see Dirk now and that stupid song he likes. A great game though, Spurs did well to come back and make a game out of it. Now I'm rooting for the Suns although I'd be very surprised if they won. For some reason Spurs just can't repeat.

Great game! The Mavs have heart. To pull out a win in OT while battling foul trouble in a hostile arena is nothing short of amazing. They have joined the elite finally.

I'm rooting for suns and for their offense......if they run with them, Dallas is done....can they resist on open shoots in first 5 sec of a possession?...I doubt that, especially Terry, Howard and Harris.....so I predict suns will win in six

Excuse me while I regurgitate.

congrats mavs.

The Spurs best chance to repeat a title run was this year with all the offseason moves that were hailed by many. They added so many great players that no one really paid too much attention to the Mavs in the pre-season.

Well I don't know if I over estimated the Spurs or underestimated the Mavs (probably both) but I definatly blew that call. It was a great series.

Milwaukee swept Boston in 83. Could be an anomaly, but the Spurs are getting longer in the tooth, esp Bowen.

I'm just glad that I don't have to hear TNT say "The heart of a champion" again this season!!!!!

GO MAVS!!!

If the Mavs do win it all, I don't even want to think of the antics Cuban will engage in. He'd probably make sure that the special-effects laden championship parade route went through every city in America, for starters.

Before we get to Detroit we have to beat Phoenix - no one is overlooking the Suns at all.

On a sidenote, about this "if the Mavs win the championship" - I know David Stern def. is on your side as he doesn't want to give that trophy over to Cuban if we got that far. There were multiple eye witness accounts from the media claiming that Stern was actually looking DEPRESSED over the fact that the Mavs won that game last night

Bull****.

Please, let's stop with the vast league conspiracy theories. If Stern looked depressed, it was probably because he has to deal with Mark Cuban on a regular basis.

EDIT - mavsman, you really need to drop the victim mentality. Your team is in the bleeping Western Conference Finals. And yet you still find something to whine about? Geez. Dude, relax and enjoy the moment. Quit trying to find excuses for things that haven't even happened yet. At least your bleeping team is still playing.

No conspiracy theories here - just passing the word along from what I've heard, VF. It's not like this stuff comes from my own mouth. I wasn't there I don't know first hand what his facial expression was...

You know it's a felony to fix games? I don't think David Stern is committing any felonies, and he's not fixing games. However, I DO think he has a serious dislike for Mark Cuban and I don't think he'd like to see the Mavs win. Not like it matters anyway, championship teams rise above any officiating blunders, hostile environments, etc etc. The Mavs so far proved that. So far.

As far as enjoying it - you bet I am! I've had the biggest grin from ear to ear today. Even a rough day @ work couldn't stop my joy from continuing. It's a shame this wasn't a western conference series b/c that was truly one of the best series I've ever seen.

Okay, a couple of things.

First, what you passed on were vague rumors. We pretty much shoot those down around here. And a facial expression is subject to a lot of interpretation. I honestly think there are a lot of victim mentality Mavericks fans. Some of you seem to be, as I said, already making excuses.

As far as David Stern disliking Mark Cuban, he's not the only fish in that pond. I suspect there are quite a few others that agree with Stern on that point.

Whether or not Stern dislikes Cuban there is no denying that the Spurs and the Pistons haven't been good for NBA ratings. So why would he try to keep Dallas (who most consider an exciting team) down? I'm sure he breathed a sigh of relief knowing that at least one high octane team will be in the finals this year.

Tried to, but I guess my true feelings for FInley showed through. Guess I can't show sympathy for the man, even when I am trying to. :D
