Mavs are expected to dump Finley

By Art Garcia
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Barring the unexpected, Michael Finley's career with the Mavericks is effectively over. The financial implications of waiving the longest-tenured member of the team far outweigh keeping Finley, making his release "academic," according to a team source.

Finley is eligible to be waived under a one-time-only exception in the new collective-bargaining agreement recently agreed upon by the NBA and the players' association. Teams above the luxury tax threshold, such as the Mavs, are permitted to release one player this summer and avoid the luxury-tax penalty from that player's contract.

"Whatever decisions [we make] will be made in the best interest of the franchise," Mavs coach Avery Johnson said Sunday. "That's pretty much what we promised our players and our fans. The part of the business of losing anyone on our team isn't a good feeling, especially Finley."

A player released would still receive his full salary for the length of the contract and count against the salary cap, but that salary would not be used to calculate the luxury-tax penalty. In Finley's case, he's on the books for $51.8 million over the next three years.

"It's a process we're working through together," Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. "We're sharing information and trying to address all the different options. We'll be working along with Michael and his representatives to figure out a win-win situation."

Assuming the Mavs remain above the luxury-tax threshold -- a safe assumption -- Finley's deal would cost the Mavs up to $103.6 million. Waiving Finley would save Mavs owner Mark Cuban up to $51.8 million in luxury-tax payments.

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH

Do we go after finley for a backup?

does his contract have to be matched, or can we just give him veterans pay?

They could theoretically pay him the veteran's minimum, and Dallas still has to pay his salary. But I'm guessing he'd look for more money on top of the $15 million he'll make this next year.

Finley is a very subjective word....

you have to consider that not only does dallas have more than 10 players on their team...but you have to realize that not all people are good people

I know we have all asked the question, why do bad things happen to good people....its simple...bad things happen to all people, it is just a way to test the human emotions....

I just hope in later years dallas wont fall down the same road as the roman empire

i think you're in the wrong forum

Does anyone else find it humorous that Zorgat actually bothered to edit that last post? Like, there was a mistake in it, so he went back and corrected it?

Anyway, Finley is NOT what we need, we've got two or three young guys that need playing time and are better defensively.

he's in the declining stage of his career. Let's not commit to a guy that we know will only get worse as months and years go by. + if we bring him over we're just slowing down the process of bringing up Kevin and Francisco.

I think our top 2 priorities this off-season should be

1. Get a quality PF
2. Resign Maurice

its not that there was something incorrect, let me explain it in word you can understand

If you open a cup of yogurt....do you hear a sound? Not only is this retorical, but its also logical for those who have mustangs....

Yes, a mustange is a great car...but you have to consider the rising gas prices of today.....i have one question

"is it Worth it?"

HUH? What NBA team is from the Roman Empire? Although I think they would call themselves the Roman Empires. LOL

Finley wont be here, He brings exactly what we don't need and already have. Notice he didn't give the mav's a title.

Sure we all hate Finley for one reason or another but he is not the answer.

Damn but he gets 51 mil for 3 years and whatever his new contract will be... WOW I wish I practiced BBALL a little more when I was a kid instead of running in the corn fields.

I think Finley would be a great pickup for the right price, and he's actually a very good defender.

Well, if would like to Subscibe you will have to go though the same System of checks and balances as everyone else.

Yes, checks and balances are good for a safe seperation of powers in our great country of america, but you have to consider, with these very complex systems of rules and regulations, the goverment sometimes has to take a considerable longer time then it could.

Buearocrats do help our society, but they also create a system of dimenishing return.....as we all know after doing an action one...the following ones dont add up to what some expect as a "Subtraction Q"

zorgat, when asking is it worth it, did you consider what financial situation the person you were asking was in? speaking of which, do you need financial help? Zebra Financial Inc is here to help, just go to our website (www.www.com) and check out our free checking out accounts.

Zebras? do you think you could train a zebra to race in the Belmont Stakes?

Steak? Do you want some?

(seriosly proph, tell ME about it...)

I don't mind the idiotic/genius remarks zorgat pops off with, as long as they aren't hostile. Gotta get the post count up somehow.
