So I think we are starting to see a trend. @bajaden said it in another thread and I thought it would be best to discuss in a dedicated thread.

We are not over paying for middling NBA talent. We are looking for young, athletic, defenders who can shoot who have high BBIQ.

A novel approach.
Likely going to see a revolving door for those two last roster spots. I approve. Go find some Kendrick Nunn’s.

It sure seems like we've moved for defense guys, and if that gives Buddy the cover to shoot all day and not be a liability on the court I'm all for keeping him around a while as a specialist. Hopefully helps Bagley to a good year as well.

I’m calling it, signing D’Antoni mid season. Chemistry will be an issue but I see the guys that have already been here for a while getting majority of shots

I hope not. We don't have a Nash, Harden, Paul or Westbrook. We will be the D'Antoni Knicks if he gets hired.

I would be shocked if we end up paying for both Walton’s salary after we fire him (I think 3 more years after this year, right?) plus a likely bigger salary that would be required to get a name likeD’Antoni.

Our defensive schemes have changed dramatically from game to game. Do we think this is Walton? Rex? Just trying new stuff out?

Probably my biggest curiosity of the season, as is there is no true way to determine this unless they tell us. But we have looked really good at times, and also like the worst defensive team in history as well.

That in and of itself is impressive.

In the last 2 games, the opposing guards have absolutely torched us. Lavine, Cobe, Van Vleet......and before that Curry, and then there was Oubre breaking out of his season long slump for 1 game

How is it that there are so many teams out there where the coach finds time or trusts the younger player and or rookies to be contributors except our guy refuses to take a look at Woodard or even Metu in a stint with the regular rotation guys. Especially Woodard. James showed last year that if all you ask him to do is to defende he can do that at a solid level.

I mean Boston is giving important minutes to Pritchard. Memphis routinely plays several of the rooks. Last time I checked Boston is fairly good and in the running to take the East.....and if you go back to last year they play those young bigs. Memphis is also trying to make the playoffs.

Yes, one can say Walton is trusting Haliburton with important minutes but that also is clearly a no-brainer. I don’t think Ramsey is ready yet but Woodard can help in an area we are deficient. Metu....I don’t know about but he sure is athletic as hell.....but Whiteside can’t even get off the bench for idiotic reason.

McNair needs to do the right thing and deal off Bjelica to a playoff caliber team who can use his talents and then deal off Cojo who just needs to go. You want a ”defensive stopper”? No one can tell me Cojo defensively is better than Justin James at that at this point. Replace the 2 vets with Woodard and James, or at least give some meaningful stints here and there for the young guys

It's the sign of a coach who plays favorites or politics. Also one who does not feel confident in his job security, so he is not willing to put what he feels is the fate of his career in a young players hands.

What Walton doesn't realize is that these actions confirm and accelerate the inevitable. Should have learned from Joerger's mistakes.

Who ever is responsible for the team's defense should be fired, period.

First, Walton needed to take the blame for at least one of these train wrecks. He has not!

Second, Walton should show some freakin' emotion after (what seemed like) the entire Toronto team took turns walking up to the three-point line. If there was any other coach in his shoes, they would have at least got a tech, something, to try and fire up the team (if not ejected).

Third, he is not coaching. He only gets off his behind to call timeouts. There are young players out there. When I watch other teams, I see coaches are up and ready for "teaching moments" as soon as their rookies come off the floor. I do not see this with Walton.

Fourth, as many have already said, even when his lineups aren't working, he keeps going to them.

I think about other coaches and other situations. I was thinking about the time the Kings came back down 35 points to Chicago. Did we wait until there was four or five minutes left to pull the players? No! Wholesale changes were made with enough time for players to mount a comeback. It was pretty obvious after the 8th made 3pt in the third quarter that there should have been a change (if not sooner). Others have said that Whiteside should have got some burn, which I feel is pretty obvious after 62 points in the paint, but what about Woodard and Ramsey? Why not give them some non-there is no-chance to win the game anyway minutes? Why not pull J.J. after he missed four straight free throws? Which leads me to my final point.

Fifth, Why not actually hold players accountable. He only waits and calls a timeout to yell at certain players, like Chavano, when he is not the only one making mistakes. If you are going to take it to that level with players (yelling at them), then it should be consistent for all players.
----------
Walton is not helping the youngsters, he seems tuned out and is unattached emotionally, he is not taking any responsibility for the terrible play, and is inconsistent with his lineups and the treatment of players.

He is not the leader this young team needs!

The reason I think Walton should be let go is because I think they intend to do so anyway. Kings would have to really break out to save his job, I don’t think a .500 season would do it even though that’s well beyond expectations, I think they kept him for optics to not have three coaches in three seasons but ultimately he isn’t McNairs hire. I think that is stupid to do and deprives the team chances to develop under the desired coach...unless Alvin Gentry is that coach.

I don't think Alvin Gentry is the 21-22 coach. It's becoming increasingly apparent that he will wind up finishing out the 2021 season. He was obviously brought here to be the break glass in case of emergency option and Walton is sinking.

Just like Igor was and that's just stupid to begin with. Like Walton doesn't feel it? C'mon Vivek, you can't run this like a tech company but if you are be quicker on the trigger.

I really don't think Igor was hired for that role at all as he was hired at the same time and Walton hadn't coached a game and was Vlade's guy all along.

But I have to assume when Monte was hired he was told that he could pick his own coach which is a move any GM would expect, but he knew that this year would be a rebuild and that a lame duck coach like Luke could be the perfect fall guy.

I do. The main reason is because as soon as it looked like Walton would survive he bailed back to the euros. Walton came in with stank on him. Just in case I think he was the fall back.

I'm totally willing to admit I was wrong, but from my perspective he was solid during Kerr's absence at Golden State and lead two very bad Lakers teams to improvements in the win column for the two years before LeBron got there, and I think it's widely acknowledged that LeBron is a coach killer. I thought he would be competent and I was wrong, though I do think its quite possible that the year with LeBron is what destroyed him and maybe he should have taken an assistant job or college job to rebound rather than go to a team with expectations.

Walton has his issues but he is fine for the tank. But to be fair to Walton, McNair needs to also do a better job. GR3’s net rating is horrible while Josh Jackson has a positive net rating. Whiteside sucks. Metu might be a player and we shall see about Woodard.

Play your vets and Bagley to the trade deadline in hopes you can move them. Them give the young kids a shot.
