The odds of him dying in that manner were in the billions. You can get punctured in the heart by falling on a rake, much less by a stingray. Life is fragile. His death wasn't some kind of come-uppance or just desserts.

In no way did I mean to sound insensitive and I'm sorry you took it that way, nor did I say he was careless or "flippant" in his work. As I said this is very sad and I'm sorry that it happened. When you work with dangerous animals on a daily basis, chances are you are going to be injured at some point, hopefully not a fatal injury. Many people die in dangerous jobs all the time and they know what they are up against. Yes, the fact that it was a stingray that killed him was ironic, but a stingray is still a lethal animal. To assume that he would go on forever like he did is naive, look at all the times he's been bitten by different animals, snakes, crocs etc...

I'm sorry he's gone, he did a lot to bring awareness of animals and conservation to people around the world.
 
though he put himself in the line of danger everyday, i am genuinely surprised at this news. what a passion the guy had for nature and animals. he will be remembered.

He knew the dangers involved in working w/ animals, he's said so before. They don't handle snakes on those shows without being sure to have correct antivenins or nearby hospitals with them. Liability. This is just a freak accident. He said he has never been bitten by a venomous snake, which I believe because it would've resulted in hospitalization.

Stingrays are no more lethal than a black widow -- less so. Yeah, they've got a nasty defense, but he died because he got hit by the barb in the wrong place. Any heart puncture is certain death.
 
I 've visited this site before and Im a lakers fan but I just wanted to say that it is a real shame that Steve Irwin had to go. If anybody in this world personafied life, it was Steve Irwin. I cant say how sad I am and how much of a loss this is. His love for animals and mother earth is sure to rub off on the millions of people he touched throughout his life. Rest In Peace Steve. Crocks Rule!

A lot of people criticized him for his over-the-top personality, but the guy did everything he did because he truly loved and cared about animals and animal conservation. On Larry King last night, they aired a re-run from a couple of years ago where he was also showing some of his animals, and that was clearly evident. I watched his show frequently, and he did some pretty risky animal rescues that few people would ever do. As dangerous as his work was, it is still very shocking that he died. He made it through for so long despite the risks, it was like he was invincible. And to die in such a very freak and unexpected way, that's not the way anyone would envision his death at all. But, at least he did die doing what he loved, which is what he preferred, I'm sure.
 
^ A few years ago, Irwin helped rescue an elderly snorkler off of Baja while he was filming a documentary. He had his crew stay there overnight to find the guy and they found him on a rockface. The guy might've died if not for him because the Coast Guard came up empty. Irwin swam over to him and got him onto the boat.
 
I was reading about this and apparently it's extremely rare to die from a stingray barb unless you get stung in the heart... which unfortunately is exactly what happened to the Croc Hunter.

I found out today that my students (junior high age) were really broken up by this. They grew up in the "Croc Hunter generation" and they truly will miss him. I did a tribute to him in my classes by showing video clips of his life's work and I think the kids really appreciated it. I'm still shocked and saddened...a huge loss for science, nature, and humanity.

Im 22 and very broken up about this...i dont think it matters the age..its just a very sad thing that he had to go out on a freak accident like this so young. I was watching animal planets tribute to him, and he was talking about his daughter getting married and how he is gonna teach his son all about nature and it was just the saddest thing ever. I feel soo bad for his family:(
 
The old bat hasn't had her name in the news for years. I think it's absolutely deplorable that she has to use Irwin's death to try and promote her own agenda, whatever it is.

I saw her on the news and the interviewer was incredulous that she would make some of the comments she made. When she said a lot of Australians shared her view, he actually accused her of lying.

Luckily, people like her have no credence and Steve Irwin's legacy will live on with or without her respect.

She loves animals more than the guy who outlayed years, money, life/limb, spirit to save them. Proves how thin the line between intellectualism and ignorance can be.

I read a snippet of one of her books. Something nasty (gross) I can't repeat here she advised women to do in order to "reassert" their sexuality. This individual is a certified fruitcake.
 

Germaine Greer is a life support system for a foul mouth!!! I had to read some of her tripe in college. Great job, Germaine......remind us again what a classy crustacean you are!!!
 
In the aftermath of Irwin's death, ten stingrays so far have been killed. Some have been mutilated. His zoo has released a statement imploring people to not do this and that it goes against Irwin's conservation.
