HE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead. He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest. He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured. Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas. Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death. Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.
He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

Tributes have already started pouring in for the larger-than-life character.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.

Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign. "The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said. A Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state. Louise Yates said it was impossible to quantify how much Mr Irwin had meant to the Queensland tourism industry. "I don't think we could even estimate how much he brought us through his personality and his profile and his enthusiasm about Queensland," she said. "It would be difficult to estimate how much he was worth. And it would be difficult to underestimate."
She said Irwin had been a larger-than-life ambassador. "It's not just what he brought but what he took with him when he travelled, his passion."

Australia Zoo, on southeast Queensland's Sunshine Coast, employs more than 500 people and attracts thousands of visitors every day. But Ms Yates said it would be "unfair and unjust" to put a dollar value on Irwin's worth to the state, because of how much he had given.

This is really sad. To me, he was one of those rare human beings who actually had a passion, and wasn't in it for the money or the fame, he just loved being around animals. R.I.P.

WHOA! As a science teacher of junior high kids, this is seriously devastating to me...a VERY sad day. He brought naturalism to the forefront, gave even the most dangerous of animals a personality, and emphasized the need for the preservation of ALL ecosystems.

That's very sad news. He lived life to the fullest...I feel for his wife and small kids.

They say they go in 3's..though I wouldn't have thought he would be the third.

He wasn't being dangerous just for the sake of being dangerous, though...it certainly got the attention of people, but it all came with a purpose. His hope was that people would see the importance of every creature on the planet, big or small, venomous or not. It is a message that I hope will continue with some of his contemporaries. Jeff Corwin is excellent as well, but lacks the personality and charm that Steve Irwin had. I'm very bummed about this one.

Rip, Crocodile Hunter.

You, like Jacques Cousteau before you, opened the eyes of millions of children and adults to the marvelous world of nature around us. You will be missed but you will not be forgotten.

Already said this on another forum but R.I.P.

Man I remember watchin this guy's show sometimes with my grandmother when I was younger. Steve Irwin was awesome, especially how he always said "crikey". It's a shame that such a good, fearless, and cool person is gone from this world. At least he died doing what he loved.

Bummed. Besides the good he did for the advancement of conservation and protection of venomous creatures, he was a jovial guy and a family man. Tough to see people like him die so young. Strikes me the same way as John Candy, John Ritter, John Belushi, John Lennon, John F. Kennedy Jr, (don't name your child John), Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Lady Di, Jam Master Jay, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc. Senseless.

very sad, but live by the sword die by the sword. It was only a matter of time until this happened, and I'm sure he knew it.
Please, you're thinking of Steve-O, not Steve Irwin. Irwin didn't do this stuff w/ flippant disregard.

The odds of him dying in that manner were in the billions. You can get punctured in the heart by falling on a rake, much less by a stingray. Life is fragile. His death wasn't some kind of come-uppance or just desserts.

i'll always remember that commercial he did for ESPN, when he tackled the alligator mascot for florida. i think he'd want to be remembered that way, bringing some laughter into the world.

he provided everyone, especially younger/kids, with a great example of how you can live your life doing what you love. the world is truly a darker place with out him in it.
