I'm gonna disagree with all you guys. He hasn't earned it, he doesn't get it. He can play for it if he wants it. If I remember correctly, the Kings can give him the longest and largest contract anyways when the time comes. I hope he becomes a max player, but in three years he hasn't.

I guess what I'm saying is I won't blame the Kings for not signing him yet. If they do, GREAT it's not my money, but when I put myself in the shoes of the ones writing the checks I can see why they wouldn't and I wouldn't.
I can't help but notice that you've been registered here for seven years, and only have around seventy posts. Based on that, I can't help but wonder whether you've spent most of the past seven years in suspended animation?

In case you have, here's a newsflash: none of these guys deserve that kind of money. There's, maybe, three guys in the entire league who "deserve" what they're getting paid. Cousins is going to get that money because he's a legit big with touch, range, handle, and a post game. "Deserve" has got **** all to do with it; he's going to get it, whether he's "earned" it, or not.

Naw, I used to post at kingstalk all the time when I was younger and had more time. I was reading about the draft, listened and called into Grant's today, and was in the mood to talk/type basketball. I don't post very often.

If Howard gets a max deal after this half asses year, then I guess Cousins will get one too. We'll see.

Just about anybody near 7 foot who can walk and...well, even the gum chewing is optional, gets numbers up in that range. Somebody around here posted a long rundown of all the $11+mil bigs running around out there, and really, none of them are out of Cousins' class. In fact if he reaches his potential you could be saying the opposite, that they aren't in his class.

I need to read up on the new contract between the players and owners. I was thinking max money was $17-20 million range.

If I have done this correctly... You take the year in question salary and mutliple it by 250%.

Which gives us Tyreke's max contract being $5,251,825 x 250% = $13,129,563 starting salary.

And DeMarcus being $4,916,974 x 250% = $12,292,244 starting salary.

The 250% is the cap hold i.e. if the player is a restricted free agent that amount counts against your cap until the players rights are waived or the player is signed. As far as the max salary:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_salary_cap#Maximum_individual_contracts_under_the_CBA

The maximum amount of money a player can sign for is contingent on the number of years that player has played and the total of the salary cap. The maximum salary of a player with 6 or fewer years of experience is either $9,000,000 or 25% of the total salary cap (2010–11: $14,511,000), whichever is greater. For a player with 7–9 years of experience, the maximum is $11,000,000 or 30% of the cap (2010–11: $17,413,200), and for a player with 10+ years of experience, the maximum is $14,000,000 or 35% of the cap (2010–2011: $20,315,400).[9]

Under the 2011 CBA, maximum salaries, as expressed as a percentage of the cap, remained mostly unchanged. However, a player coming off his rookie scale contract is eligible to sign for 30% of the cap if he was voted to start in two All-Star Games, was named to an All-NBA Team twice, or was named MVP. This was dubbed the "Derrick Rose Rule" after the 2011 MVP.[10] In addition, newly signed contracts now have a maximum duration of five years for players with Bird rights and four years for all other players (including sign-and-trade acquisitions).[5] Every team is allowed one "designated player" who receives a five-year maximum extension on his rookie scale contract.

Ah got it now. I forgot the 250% represented the cap holds.

So we're looking at around 14 million?

Somewhere around 14.5 million more than likely to start. It depends on the cap, which is specified in early July. Then it I think 5% year over year with a 5th year. The exact number won't be known until the moratorium on free agent signings is lifted, which was July 10th last year. Since DMC does not apply for the Derrick Rose rule, he can't make the real max. If he becomes as good as many of us think he will, we actually will be getting a bit of a deal because of that.
