cooper to coach USC women

As a Trojan I am stoked. Also as a Monarch fan I would rather not see him at the Sparks. Win-Win. He will finish this year out at LA though. Fans are now calling for him to bring Lisa Leslie(a Trojan) to his right hand side. Another Spark/Trojan Tina Thompson could wind up there with him too.

I found that whole ordeal interesting....

I don't think he's staying the whole Sparks season by choice....I'm intrigued by how he's going to make this first year work, he just lost a MickieD because the team was coachless/rudderless now. Then again, she was somebody Trakh recruited, but still....

If it's going to be old Trojan Homecoming, why didn't they go after Cynthia Cooper?

I am wondering about that too. I would think USC would at least invite Cynthia Cooper for an interview, or even another alum, Pam McGee.

The last thing I saw said it was official and that the one assistant Cooper has on staff will be running things until his Sparks season is over. Given that Raybrun is doing a happy dance as alumni would give me an idea that the alumni has been informed that this is done. As for Cynthia Cooper...yes she has a job and is under contract, but when has that stopped anybody (cough...Calipari...cough)...She was a little hurt to have not gotten a courtesy jingle at least.

Cooper announcement is in today LA Daily now

"I'm looking forward to working in a collegiate atmosphere and all that comes with it," Cooper said in a statement. "But for the next few months, it's important to understand that my focus and commitment will be with the LosAngeles Sparks and winning a championship. I'm excited about the Sparks' upcoming season and I am totally devoted to them right now. After that, I'll switch gears and be equally excited about USC."

USC is one program that can throw a lot of money at coaches. I imagine he got quite a deal.

In my mind you can scratch off the LA Sparks as the team to win the 2009 WNBA Championship. Way too many distractions:

Cooper Resignation
Leslie Retirement
Parker Pregnancy

Throw on top of that a mediocre back court and a starting lineup featuring a front court at playoff time will be 34 (Thompson), 35 (Milton-Jones) and 37 (Leslie) attempting to fit in their best player (Parker). The West is wide open in my opinion.
