compare and contrast 2002 WCF team to curren team going into the playoffs (hopefully)

bibby vs bibby
kevin vs christie
artest vs peja
thomas vs webber
brad miller vs divac

i know the 2002 team was hands down better. better chemistry. but......................

bibby same
DC >>>> Kevin
Artest > Pedja but in that system Pedja > Artest

Webber >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thomas
Vlade >> Miller
-------------------------
Bobby, Hedo, Pollard >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The bench - we have now

conclusion - every comparisn is very pathetic

Stojakovic hardly played in the Western Conference Finals; a more accurate comparison would probably be Turkoglu and Artest.

The bench was also much better and everybody knew their roles. I still don't think Bonzi or SAR know their roles and a few starters are still trying to figure it out. In 2002 we had the premiere 6th man in Bobby, Hedo who could come in and play multiple positions, and Pollard who would do the dirty work. We have the makings of a decent team, but I think it is more fair to compare this team with the 98-99 or 99-00 team.

bibby cancels out bibby, but believe it or not i think that the distance between doug and martin isnt as long as everyone believes. yes doug was our primary/ our only great defender, we have a better defender in ron artest that makes up for that. the only reason i would choose doug over martin is his veteran experience and his passing. they both average the same. 10-12 points a game.

ron artest is a much better player than peja in any system. in pejas defense he had players that complimented his game. christie, webber and divac set him up for great open looks. but artest plain and simple does it on both ends of the floor. can score better and definately defend better. webber KILLS thomas and the miller and divac comparison i would have to give to brad.

so i have

bibby=bibby
martin < christie
artest > peja
thomas <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<webber
brad miller> divac
bonzi, cisco, rahim< b0-jax, hedo, pollard

but our current roster and guys from our bench can give us a post up game. if we were to meet san antonio in the playoffs, we have players in rahim, bonzi and artest that can post up any perimeter defender the spurs can throw out there.

This team isn't even close to the 2002 team... The Webber vs. Thomas matchup is such ownage it isn't even funny. Then take the bench we have now compared to 2002 and it just blows the team out of the water. It's not even a comparison.

yep. that 2002 team will blow this years roster away. 6 games at the most. but what are the things we have now that we didnt back then?

1. first off since artest came our defense has been better (only giving up 93 points a game as opposed to the 2002 team that gave up a little over 97)
2. 2 perimeter players in artest and bonzi that can post up. what perimeter player on the 2002 roster could give us this?
3. the artest peja trade gave us a player that isnt one dimensional. peja had players that could pass and get him open looks and the princeton offense really worked for him, but lets remember that it was only during regular season. peja choked in the playoffs. without webber we needed another perimeter player besides bibby that can make plays. as shown in the seattle series peja couldnt live up to it.

Other than Bibby that team was years in the making. The current team has been together for what 30 games of which Bonzi, Garcia have all missed time and at times Ron has been playing injured. I would hope our 2002 WCF would be better. I think with a couple of moves our current roster could be on par with that team.

Honestly I think that team could beat most of the teams in the league, especially if healthy, right now in a 7 games series. I think the league has gotten a little weaker at the top but there are more good teams than in the past. Lakers were very strong with Shaq and Kobe in the playoffs. Spurs aren't nearly as good although Duncan is very good. Detroit isn't nearly as good. But right now we have 5 pretty good teams who could win it all. Back there there was maybe 3 or 4(Kings, Lakers and Spurs or Dallas).

I think if the Indy fans were here they would point something out. Ron has only been to the playoffs twice. In those appearances he wasn't very good atleast offensively. I think he is a career 38% from the field during the playoffs. I didn't pay too much attention to him in the Indy-Detroit series but I think according some Indy fans, he cost them the series.

Definitely the 2002 team can kick this year's teams butts. But like someone pointed out, that 2002 team was together for years and the chemistry was outstanding while this year's team only has played together for a handful of games, and is still very much learning each other. There's some interesting matchups though, and I'd wager Artest would find himself guarding Webber in critical posessions, with Thomas switching on Peja. I could also see DC completely nullifying Martin but get schooled by Bonzi in the low block, like he used to do in his Portland days. And I'm sure both Bibbys will score a ton of points, if they're guarding each other. But they could always switch DC and Kevin to guard each Bibby, making things difficult. Bobby Jackson would be a handful for this year's team though, and not even Jason Hart could handle him, that's if he ever takes his warmups off. It'd also be funny to see Brad's silly face to the refs every time Vlade flops and gets charging calls hehehe..

this thread should be deleted because any comparisn is an insult to a great team that earned to wear kings uniform night in and night out.

bibby = bibby

christie > kevin

artest > peja

webber > thomas (big advantage)

divac > brad miller (taking into account skills, basketball IQ and chemistry factors)

Current team only has the advantage at one position.

Can we please close this thread? Not only was THAT team something special in terms of overall NBA history, but we also want this team to become great in its own right.

And just in case you were wandering, I don't give a flying **** what anybody else thinks, I have tapes and DVD's proving that those Kings were something special in a whole another way. Comparing them player for player is not even fair.

Enjoy the old Kings if you have your archive. Let the new Kings grow and get somewhere before we start comparing them. Otherwise it is not even close.

Yeesh....

Geez, get used to it, this is what fans of teams that have good histories do, and this is the first time the Kings have had any sort of decent history. Comparisons are a part of sports - how many times have you heard freaking Adam Morrison compared with Larry Bird - of course there's no comparison but this is what people who watch sports do. Of course this team is very different from 2002 but I don't think the comparisons are so inane that you should be begging for this thread to be closed.

And while I agree that 2002 was a better team, I think that the difference isn't NEARLY as big as some people say. In 2002 we felt lucky to even be competitive. Now we're spoiled and when we aren't a top contender (which most people didn't think we were at the beginning of 2002), we are upset.

The rest of the league is miles ahead of the rest of the league back then - Phoenix is better, San Antonio is better, Dallas is better, there wasn't anything like the Pistons or Heat back then. I really am not so sure that the Lakers of 2002 would win the title this year, and in this league they most certainly wouldn't win three in a row.

Give this team some time and quit writing them off as an inferior product - or as Piksi says "an insult" to the memory of the 2002 team. Talk about an overreaction to a couple of tough losses. This team has the second longest home winning streak in FRANCHISE HISTORY. That's something! This team has come back from DEAD to earn a very good chance at a playoff spot. Give them a break and give them a year and then we'll see how they compare.

Every season has good teams and it changes from year to year. Just because the Suns weren't good 3 years ago or several teams are better now than they were in 2002 doesn't mean anything. There were no teams like the Heat in 2002? The Kings of 2002 were clearly better than the Heat of 2006. The Kings of 2002 were an elite team that would compete with anyone in 2006. They just came up a little short in 2002. Where do you come up with this stuff? It sounds like you are making this stuff up on the fly to try and justify giving props to the current team at the expense of the 2002 team. You are way off base. That 2002 was something special and this team in comparison is not even close.

I'm a big fan of Brad's, but 2002 Vlade >>>> 2006 Miller. The only edge Miller has is shooting. They're about even in rebounding and shotblocking. Vlade's got a big edge in passing, post defense, and post offense. We need him to come back to Sac and teach Brad some more moves.

piski. I am just not seeing were Hedo and Pollard was this great bench you are so proud of i can uderstand Bobby Jackson but he got starter minutes those years getting close to 30 a game.

because the fit perfectly and could play multiple positions. They provided energy and the were skilled too. Hedo practically played WCF2002 as a starter and did very well

Yeah, the Kings of 2002 were definitely better than the heat of 2006. It was a special team and if this team wants to be better than it, well it has a long way to go.

let me just sum it up..

2002 Kings >>>>>>>> Present Kings

That team we once had was untouchable, no matter what anybody says, they were the best!

But I still think we have a good team now and we can get it together, we will get it together, and we will make the playoffs. This team now that we have Artest and others will do just fine. I think we're gonna be great next season, hopefully, and hopefully we can be like the old kings and even better..but to try and compare that old team and the team we have now...no.

but we're still the best! :D
