College football

Go Red Raiders....

I love the pure excitement of college football/college basketball more than any other team sports. That showdown game in Lubbock tonight was a classic for the ages. Sort of reminded me a bit of the Texas-USC national championship a couple years ago when Vince Young sprinted for winning touchdown on 4th down with just a few seconds left and no timeouts. Just like do or die with a couple seconds on the clock as Texas Tech's Harrell and Crabtree hooked up for a helluva stunning throw/catch/run to down #1 ranked Texas.

Now the BCS is in turmoil again, not unlike all last November 07 when there was upset after upset every week of #1 or #2, etc. I suppose the rankings out Sunday will be #1 Alabama #2 Penn St. #3 Texas Tech - with Florida, USC, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St. and a couple of others still thinking they can claim a NCAA Football Championship when its all said and done this season. Great drama and fall/winter fun as always!

Great drama that will ultimately be decided by a bunch of number crunching computers, coaches, and notepad carrying sportswriters. What a shame. An 8 or 12 team college football playoff would be the most exciting thing ever. Unfortunately, I don't believe it will ever happen.

The college presidents (BCS schools, anyway) like the money the way it is - no chance of a playoff happening. The only thing I can think of is a committee from the Cotton Bowl throwing money at top tier programs to get them to play there instead. The +1 is ridiculous - college football should not be played after New Year's day.

While it's easy for Notre Dame to get in a BCS (assuming they plan on winning games in the future) it stinks for mid-majors unless they play bigger teams OOC. However, none of the BCS schools want to play them - they'll take the bodybag games vs. Directional State Tech and DIAA schools.

There are several ways to fix this, but none are plausible. A playoff system will not help, because the current BCS conferences will work it so that their conference champ gets an automatic bid, then they'll want 2 from each conference, etc. etc. And they'll get it. Meanwhile, they'll argue that playoffs detract from studying, even though most of these schools have abysmal graduation rates anyway.

I say, go back to the old system. It was flawed, but it always gave us an offseason's worth of discussion. Maybe even throw the +1 in that scenario and let the computers/voters decide who gets one extra week.

That being said, this season has been deliciously messed up. Who is truly #1? It looks like USC may be able to sneak back into the championship game vs. JoePa the Enbalmed and his army of the undead. 'Bama better not mess up.

I hope somebody takes out Alabama, I'm so done with Nick Sabean. I could handle USC and Penn St. simply because neither of them is Florida. Go Trojans!

Yes indeedy, there is nothing like college sports....:)

No no no to PSU! I would relish JoePa getting passed over for a National Championship in his last year. Absolutely relish. Besides, those who know Bama know that they've already claimed another 2 national championships for this year.

But then again, I guess PSU in the title game would be better than a USC team that has looked quite mediocre at times.
