Free agent signings soon to follow

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The NBA's new collective bargaining agreement was finally completed and signed early Saturday, clearing the way for free agent signings to begin Tuesday.

Lawyers for the league and the players' union had been working nearly around the clock for the past several days on drafting the documents for the six-year agreement, which was agreed to in principle more than a month ago.

There already were two delays in the date for free agents to begin signing.

League attorneys will spend the next few days reviewing the agreement with teams, and signings will begin at noon EDT on Tuesday.

The salary cap will be set at $49.5 million, an increase of $5.63 million from last season.

For the first time, teams will know before the season begins what the luxury tax threshold will be -- $61.7 million. Teams with payrolls over that will have to pay a dollar-for-dollar tax on the amount of their payroll that exceeds the $61.7 million.

Under the old luxury tax system, teams did not know until the season ended whether the luxury tax would even kick in, or what the threshold was. The new rules provide a level of cost certainty to replace the cost mystery many owners complained about.

Free agents signing under the midlevel exception, which can offered by teams who are over the salary cap, can sign contracts beginning at $5 million annually.

According to hoopshype, the Kings currently have around $58 million in salary for this year. Will the Maloofs match deals for Darius and Mo and use the full MLE, despite the luxury tax?

Well since they wouldn't be that far over even if they did, then it doesn't seem too unlikely. Plus didn't Petrie say that the Maloofs have pretty much said there are no set limits as to how much he could spend?

I think hoopshype includes qualifying offers, because otherwise the numbers don't add up.

Taking the numbers from hoopshype and including what has been reported for Hart and Wells, I come up with these numbers:

Mike Bibby 11,500,000
Brad Miller 8,750,000
Predrag Stajokovik 7,600,000
Corliss Williamson 6,000,000
Kenny Thomas 6,109,375
Brian Skinner 4,950,000
Kevin Martin 937,440
Cisco Garcia ~937,440 just guessing here
Bonzi Wells 8,000,000
Jason Hart 1,700,000
----------

Total ~$ 56,484,255

That leaves a little over $5 million in wiggle room before the dollar for dollar penalty kicks in. Now that the salary cap and luxury tax is set, team can know what they can and can't do. Since it is now down to the 2nd or 3rd level of FA, haggling can begin with the RFA.

Even still, it was clarified that it would have to improve the team. There is only a slight difference between having a threshold you don't want to cross and having a "set" limit that you wont cross. I am relieved that there is least an indication that they will be at least willing to cross the luxury tax limit, if it was prudent to do so.

IF (god forbid) nothing happens this next season and peja and bonzi come off the books, does that mean the kings are finally $15 million under the cap??? can they actually shoot for a free agent with that???

so basically peja, bonzi and corliss are off the books next offseason... thats 21 mill.... skinner would be a restricted fa..... maybe we can go after yao, play miller at pf and thomas at sf..... lol....

Corliss is still on the books -- has 2 years left.

Just Peja and Bonzi.

i would expect the kings to be near the luxury tax threshold, but won't go over it.... knowing petries past patterns, i would expect that he will try to trade some players and swap saleries, instead of just signing a FA with the full MLE... the kings have not used the full MLE on one FA for a long time and i doubt they will now... they may use part of the MLE, but probably not the whole MLE

the only FA left that the kings would sign for the full MLE is probably Antoine Walker, and i would think petrie would rather do a S&T involving Thomas IF he were intersted in Walker...
