If Whiz is the leading candidate where is Geoff petrie, Is whiz geoff petries leading candidate. Whiz is GM whith the monarchs also the head coach and friends with the maloofs, Where is Petrie's executive of the year power.

The better question is, where is anyone's power besides the Maloof's? The players obviously have none (Adelman let go despite Artest wanting him there), Petrie obviously has none, and the fans OBVIOUSLY have none...

It is their right to do exactly that. And Geoff Petrie has tens of millions of reasons NOT to cut off his nose to spite his face.

But does he really? He could get paid the same $$$ from any number of other teams and have more control of the program. Might be the inertia of a dozen years as much as anything that is holding him here now.

Not to get too far afield, it is the Maloofs' team. They are the ones who gave Petrie a new contract a while back. They are HIS bosses.

Petrie is the president of basketball operations and the Kings general manager BUT he still answers to the Maloofs. The Maloofs have made it clear they want to exercise THEIR rights as owners to make a decision crucial to the future of THEIR team.

If it fails, they will be the ones responsible. Petrie has nothing to lose in this race. Once the coaching decision is announced, Petrie and Whis can get together and decide on the direction they want to go. Petrie will be doing the player acquisitions with input from Whis. The pecking order will be restored, hopefully.

What will be intolerable, I would think, would be if Whis ran to the Maloofs over any disagreements he and Petrie MIGHT have. I'm not saying this would happen, but I'm thinking it's this kind of scenario that would be where things could get sticky.

It's pretty much wait and see... and pray for the best.

Fascinating how the gap in the poll closes as the reality sets in - the need to resolve cognitive dissonance... I love it. As we evolve through the grief curve... it is almost 55/45 on this poll, last I remember it was running almost 90/10?

The other poll, the one that asks if you LIKE the idea, is the one running 90/10. This one, the one that asks if you will ACCEPT Whis as coach, has never been that far apart.

this poll seems silly to me. what choice do we have? accept him or not? this poll is basically saying:

if john whisenant is hired as a kings coach, will you:

a) deal with it

or

b) go on strike

those of us who are vehemently opposed to the decision aren't gonna jump ship because of it. at least, i'm not. i'm gonna deal with it, prance around like mick jagger singing "i can't get no satisfaction," then laugh ironically about it afterwards when it turns out i was right all along. ;)

for me, its a win-win. if i'm wrong, then john whisenant pulls of the miracle of all miracles and gets the kings into the playoffs during his rookie nba season, and i get to root for my team in may. if i'm right, then i get to play the "i told you so" card. it sucks, cuz the kings lose out, and possibly for many years to come, but my oh my, it feels so good to be right. :p

This poll was created first. I thought pretty much the same as you, Padrino, so I created the one about liking the idea, which I thought was a lot more relevant at the time.

All well in good if your Mitch Kupcheck and have no problem being a tool for the man with no ego atached to the reletive success or failure of the team you in theory manage. It has NOT been my impression that Petrie is hapy to be a soft GM with fairly limited controll over his team, nor do I get the impression that he is happy to sit in the copilot's seat while the captain goes about ramming iceburgs. God knows I could be compleetly wrong on this but I don't see Petrie being happy with watching the team HE put together dismantled and having little voice in how it gets reassembled. Too many other teams out there that would love to have him on his terms, too much reputation at stake, and qute frankly not much reward in being the weak GM even if things don't go south.

The thing about Petrie is we pretty much know NOTHING about how he thinks, feels, etc. He is truly a sphinx-like character in all of this.

Bottom line, though, is he's still there. If he truly had basic conceptual differences with the Maloofs, he wouldn't be. As he said in the Amick article today, "My total loyalty is to Joe and Gavin. Bottom line."

You won't get a dissenting opinion out of him; not publicly, anyway. And, if he decides at some point to walk away, he'll do it without airing his grievances in the media.

Petrie is pretty much in a win-win situation right now. If this does work out, then he has his team back on the road to elite status. If it doesn't, you can bet the Maloofs will drop back into the shadows.

Geoff Petrie will give this a chance. If it all goes south, then things could get very, very interesting.

Wow I think that's overly pessimistic. I sure hope and expect the Kings to make the post-season no matter who the coach is. If the Whiz era gets off on too bad a footing, and it looks like the Kings are lottery bound, I believe the Mafools will pull the plug on the experiment. But I don't expect that to happen.

However, I won't be surprised if some other NBA owners are putting out feelers to Geoff saying "come on over and bring Rick along..." in which case we could see Nellie come on board as GM???

^^Just like we couldn't talk to Van Gundy without the Heat's permission, other teams cannot talk to Geoff Petrie without the Maloof's permission. And I don't see that happening...at least, not now.

I'll bet you like it if he wins, too.

Apples and oranges.

A lot of us don't like the decision now and have said so. That doesn't mean that once he's on board we'll storm the castle with the torches and pitchforks. Whisenant will be afforded the same clean slate pretty much any one else has received.

We all want the best for our Kings. We're Kings fans. The great majority of posters who have responded to the "like" poll have said they don't like the idea. If it works out, of course they'll be happy.

None of this is cast in stone. People are allowed to have their opinions changed once the season starts and results become clear.
