All well in good if your Mitch Kupcheck and have no problem being a tool for the man with no ego atached to the reletive success or failure of the team you in theory manage. It has NOT been my impression that Petrie is hapy to be a soft GM with fairly limited controll over his team, nor do I get the impression that he is happy to sit in the copilot's seat while the captain goes about ramming iceburgs. God knows I could be compleetly wrong on this but I don't see Petrie being happy with watching the team HE put together dismantled and having little voice in how it gets reassembled. Too many other teams out there that would love to have him on his terms, too much reputation at stake, and qute frankly not much reward in being the weak GM even if things don't go south.VF21 said:Not to get too far afield, it is the Maloofs' team. They are the ones who gave Petrie a new contract a while back. They are HIS bosses.
Petrie is the president of basketball operations and the Kings general manager BUT he still answers to the Maloofs. The Maloofs have made it clear they want to exercise THEIR rights as owners to make a decision crucial to the future of THEIR team.
If it fails, they will be the ones responsible. Petrie has nothing to lose in this race. Once the coaching decision is announced, Petrie and Whis can get together and decide on the direction they want to go. Petrie will be doing the player acquisitions with input from Whis. The pecking order will be restored, hopefully.
What will be intolerable, I would think, would be if Whis ran to the Maloofs over any disagreements he and Petrie MIGHT have. I'm not saying this would happen, but I'm thinking it's this kind of scenario that would be where things could get sticky.
It's pretty much wait and see... and pray for the best.
