I’d do it as well.
They all expire in 2 years at the least (same as DeRozan) and you could also save the same amount of money the following offseason if you were to release DeRozan. The only difference is we wouldn’t have $10 mil in dead salary from DeRozan. That $10 mil would be tied to Derrick Jones Jr. which is a better use of the cap.
I like the on court fit as well in the short term. We have a lot of scorers on this roster that aren’t exactly defensive stoppers (Monk, LaVine, DeRozan, & Sabonis) and we lack forward size, length, and athleticism. Jones gives us a decent 3&D forward to plug in there and open up shots/opportunities for guys like Murray to develop.
PG - Schroder / Monk
SG - Ellis / Carter / Davis
SF - LaVine / Clifford / Bogdan / McDermott
PF - Murray / Jones Jr. / Jones / Saric
C - Sabonis / Raynaud / Eubanks
…and you could do a minutes distribution like…
PG - Schroder (26) / Monk (22)
SG - Ellis (26) / Carter (14) / Monk (4) / LaVine (4)
SF - LaVine (28) / Clifford (14) / Jones (6)
PF - Murray (30) / Jones Jr. (18)
C - Sabonis (34) / Raynaud (14)
Sabonis = 34 min
LaVine = 32 min
Murray = 30 min
Schroder = 26 min
Ellis = 26 min
Monk = 26 min
Jones Jr. = 24 min
Carter = 14 min
Clifford = 14 min
Raynaud = 14 min
I don’t think we’re taking the league by storm or anything with that rotation but it would allow us to give some consistent minutes to our young guys (Murray, Ellis, Carter, Clifford, & Raynaud) and there would be a little more opportunity to develop on offense with DeRozan’s usage/shots being sent out.
If the young guys are looking promising and they are ready for an expanded role, you could look at moving Monk at the deadline to free up some more minutes.
