Cleveland Lands Jones
7th September, 2005 - 1:58 pm

Beacon-Journal - The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached a contract agreement with free-agent point guard Damon Jones. It is a four-year deal worth $16 million, according to an NBA source who spoke with Brian Windhorst. The deal has incentives that could push the value to near $20 million.

Jones has been on the Cavaliers' radar screen for months. The 3-point specialist averaged 11.6 points and 4.3 assists. Most importantly, he shot 43 percent from 3-point range, hitting 225 of them in all.

The Cavaliers had offered him a contract last month and waited weeks for a response. Jones had preferred to return to the Miami Heat and that looked like it would happen after the Heat failed to sign Michael Finley.

He will help bolster the team's woeful jump shooting as well as provide another ball handler.

Jones and Eric Snow will compete for the starting point guard job.

Now lets just see if he can shoot as well on the Cleveland team as he did in Miami. Cleveland seems to have improved, but I don't know if they can make it as easy for him as Wade and Shaq did.

Jones is just another sidekick to another phenom from the '03 draft. Not a good sidekick, but a sidekick.

It was, and I think this hurts Miami a bit. The trade added in much needed talent -- they really only had two guys last year. But they still need roleplayers who can shoot or they actually MIGHT become like the Lakers of a couple of years ago. I had generally assumed that after missing out on Finley they would then just sign Damon.

Miami has some serious depth now. I think they will have some problems spreading the ball around more now that they have JWill and Walker. Im glad they got rid of Jones though, I live an hour north of miami and I go to some of the games and I cant stand the guy...Last year when Sac came down here to play the heat, This old guy tried fighting me because I was cheering for the kings! What a ****... You guys are lucky you live in Sac-town.

Thats just plain dumb. Fans like that are bad for the game. People like that are bad for the planet.

No offense, but there are two sides to every story... and you were rooting for the visitors in the Heat arena. I've been in Arco enough times rooting for the home team and having to put up with Maverick fans or "other" fans, so I know how annoying it can get from the other side of the fence.

Cleveland has this pretty good player too...can't seem to remember his name, but he's been known to draw a bit of attention.

Uh...I don't know if you watched LeBron or not last year, but he may ALREADY be better than Kobe OR Shaq. One of the 5 best in the league last year, and only averaged 27.2pts 7.2rebs 7.4rebs 2.2stls 0.7blks. At 20. Wait till you see the encore.

Damon may not be guarded all year long.

No, that's okay. It gives us something to ridicule!

yes where is SHE? because i am a guy and lebron isnt great.... mcgrady averaged insane numbers with orlando because he was their only option, just like lebron..... he is it.... how great will he be if/when his much improved team doesnt make the playoffs again?

he is good.... maybe even really good, but great? not yet or possibly ever.... id still take kobe over lebron, same goes for mcgrady.....

doesnt that prove my point? he averaged 1 more bucket than drew gooden.... how is he an option?

hell, dirk averaged 26.1/9.7/3.1..... is he great? people cant decide if he's better than peja....

kobe averaged 2 less rebounds and 1 less assist than lebron but odom averaged 5 points more than the next option.... unlike big z who had 2 more than drew gooden..... drew ****ing gooden.....

In that case, you may have them, and I'll take LeBron.

I think averaging 27/7/7 at only 20, which isn't even near your prime, is something that is...Quite special, to say the least.

I know I'd take him if I wanted to build around someone.

Thre comes a point when you just have to recognize supreme talent when you see it.
