Kevin Garnett will not play tonight in his first return to the Timberwolves arena since his trade to Boston.

That didn't stop the Minnesota Timberwolves powers that be, however. They had him come out onto the court before introductions - in his street clothes - and the public address announcer said, "Ladies and gentlemen. We want to welcome back ... " They gave the complete intro they would have given him as a home player and the crowd responded with a standing ovation that really touched Garnett. You could see it on his face.

Now why couldn't the Kings powers that be have done something like that for Rick Adelman? Hrm??????

Get over it people. Comparing Garnett's return to Minnesota and Adelmans' return to Sac are ridiculous.

A) The split was perceived to be a bad one. Adelman took it personally that he was not going to be brought back. Adelman was a bit of a softy (and so were his teams in the defense department) in the emotions department and you could see it when he was not re-signed.

From what I can gather the Maloofs didn't like the negative spin Adelman put on not being re-signed.

B) Ex-Coaches are typically not announced to the crowd like Players are. A coach is announced afterthe players almost as an after thought typically. Fans can choose to welcome the coach or not. From what I heard about Rick's return the fans did show their appreciation. Just as the fans have done for every beloved player that has returned. (I was there for Webber's frist game back in Sac, when he went to Philadelphia and gave him his due)

Not true at all - when the Kings were making their runs they were one of the best defensive teams in the league. Everyone just focused so much on the scoring that sometimes that is forgotten.

they did it for thier star player, garnett. we did it for our star player, webber. no different. coaches suits and ties dont get lifted to the rafters. im sure that when detroit plays at the target center, they never give a standing ovation for flip saunders ever

In this case the Maloofs absented themselves from the arena on the day their most successful coach returned. They prohibited the TV cameras from showing the fan reaction live (something a lot of fans wanted to see on TV), and I believe instructed their announcers to downplay the return.

This was an active move on the Maloofs' part to show disrespect to Adelman. It isn't the fans reaction we are focusing on but the reaction of the Maloof organization. The fans cheered him and gave him a standing ovation.

Good grief!

It shows that Minnesota went out of their way to honor KG as opposed to the Kings who went out of their way to dishonor Adelman.

we went out of our way to honor webber

please pick one answer
kg is to minnesota as:

1. webber is to sac
2. adelman is to sac

3. All of the above
?

In reality, both Webber and Adelman were forced to leave and neither seemed happy about it (although they both accepted it). Garnett wasn't really forced to go, but in the end he and the Timberwolves agreed it was best for both parties. So the mutual decision part of the Garnett scenario made it easier for them to honor him specifically, rather than the Webber and Adelman situations where they let the crowd do the honoring.

forced? when was anybody forced out of sacramento? things happen and in webber's case, he was honored not just by the arco crowd but by the maloofs too and of he didnt want to go because he had just had the time of his career here. now we have the memories and a restaurant and both parties have moved on nicely. what if adelman had been cut in the middle of the season just like flip saunders. would the maloofs be so classless then? you guys would be calling for their heads over a business decision

You're nuking things out, and it's not really complicated. Besides, it's one of those things where, if you don't know, you just don't know. If you feel that Adelman deserved to be treated with respect by the Maloofs, then of course you're going to be indignated. And if you don't believe that Adelman deserves to have been treated with respect by the Maloofs upon his return to ARCO, then no explanation, no matter how detailed or how simplified, is ever going to make sense to you.

It's like people who take a long-range view of the Kings versus people who live in the now: it doesn't matter how many times you explain one side or the other. You either believe in your heart that he deserves it, or you don't.

sorry but since I posited the original question, I refuse to accept your corollaries.

Glenn hit the nail on the head as far as the point I was making. If you don't agree with it, fine. No reason to get your panties in a bunch. It amazes me how blasted contrary some people are.

This is a message board. It was a simple statement/observation of how differently things were handled.

Did I say they were the same situation but with just a change in name? Nope.

You can read whatever you like into my statement but it doesn't change the fact that I - PERSONALLY - wish that Rick Adelman had been afforded at least part of the respect on the part of TPTB in Maloof Sports that Kevin Garnett was shown in Minnesota. That's it. That's the whole enchilada. Nothing else.

yea so do i along with everybody else here. but when you make a thread about garnett, dont throw in little jabs at the maloofs about that situation because before i added anything this whole conversation it had been spun around because you added that last sentence. what you should have done is titled this thread "garnett honored in minnesota" and talked about that and just shut your mouth about adelman. weve already discussed that and you will have your chance to talk about it again april 1st

So what exactly is your point? If it's simply attacking me over my choice of thread title, I think you've pretty much beaten that horse to death. If it's anything else you need to work on your presentation because there's nothing much there.

Have a nice day.

I agree and believe it is a fair analogy. 8 years. 500+wins, ore than double any other Kings coach...I'd say an opportunity to give an ovation is the least this franchise should have offered.
