Tonight's city council meeting addressed the issue of giving approval to move forward with due diligence towards the creation of a public-private partnership to keep the Kings and provide a news entertainment and sports complex.

Once again, the presentations of CrownDowntown were varied and informed.

I'm writing this before the vote is taken but it certainly appears as though it's going to pass.

Councilmember Darrell Fong says he cannot vote in the affirmative as he does not have enough information to make an informed decision. Apparently, he doesn't understand that the vote tonight is to allow the City Manager to do the due diligence to get the information so the council can make an informed decision about any future public-private partnership.

Councilmember Kevin McCarty (who is running for State Assembly next year) says he agrees with everyone else who wants to keep the Kings in town as they are a definite asset. He then brings up the RoFR offer brought up by Fox40 last night and says he thinks this proposal should also be considered. In other words, he wants to create an opposition to KJ's efforts.

Councilmember Steve Cohn also recommends that the City Manager consider the option of an ownership group that would buy the Kings and build (rebuild?) a new arena where STA currently stands.

Hopefully we will know more by weeks end. I assume there might be another vote in the coming weeks to approve the arena?

All that really happened tonight was that the city council gave the City Manager approval to enter negotiations with potential ownership groups, which pretty much ensures the eminent announcement of the whale identities, most likely at the State of the City address KJ gives on Thursday. The council will have to approve anything that commits city participation in any public-private partnership, including any approval of a new arena.

How can this be brought up when nothing has been officially confirmed? Wasn't it a "source" that told Fox40, unless I'm missing something?

It broke on Twitter during the council meeting that it had been confirmed that the minority is saying he's interested in buying the team and keeping it here and that he has the funds to do so without an investment from the city. None of this has been confirmed, though, and there appears to be quite a bit of speculation and skepticism.

My gut instinct is it's diversionary, an attempt to muddy the waters and confuse the issue. We'll have to see what happens after Thursday.

Gah. Just got back home from the meeting. Holy crud, it was long. But we're one step further along the path and that's all that matters.

Mighty convenient that the minority owner's announcement won't be for a few days. Can only wonder the motivations, good or bad in terms of Sacramento?

Yes, it is the East Coast. However, I was watching the twitter feed and his tweet came up followed by the vote and my reaction was what the bleep. I re-checked the timeline and I may be the one full of it, not sure but definitely possible, I was looking at the twitter feed this morning

Jason Jones being a terrible beat writer is news?
I know and I did say I was beating a dead horse. But come on look at his tweet, he not only claimed he was going to bed (before the vote) but essentially complaining that the game interfered with his social life (cutting into his South Beach time).

Heard on the radio the city manager say the Kerhriotis group has to come up by Friday with the documentation showing $750 million. Just place 750 mill in escrow, guys. Then we'll talk.

First substantial indicator that the Maloofs will sell to alternate group if Seattle's bid is turned down?
If the Seattle deal falls through, they are free to consider other offers. That's always been true. The league can deny the sale to Seattle, but they can't force the Maloofs to sell or tell them what offer to accept. However, I think they will sell, if the league fails to approve the sale to Seattle. I'm also sure they would be pressured to take the city offer, not some barely conceived Kehriotis plan that doesn't have a site, plan or money yet for an arena. The NBA doesn't want another arena fiasco in Sacramento.

Also, with no public money, Kehriotis could pull a Clay Bennett.

Yep. We don't have enough information to vote on an arena, so let's not pass a resolution to get more information and a term sheet. *slapping my head*

The NBA can be very clear that they won't approve of any plan that involves moving the team out of Sacramento. Then the ball is in the Kings court. Sounded like a pun on something, didn't it?

I still wonder why somebody would build an arena and buy the Kings but then have the Kings leave town. It turns the arena from a good money maker to something much less. Anyway, crunch time is upon us.

I don't mean they would say their plan is to move the team. Clay Bennett purchased the Sonics and said he would keep them in Seattle. If Kehriotis's group says that without involving the city is the proposal up front, I'm just saying we could face another battle to keep the Kings here. I'd just as soon do this once and have the team tied to Sacramento in legal documents. In Kehriotis's proposal the team would not sign any legal documents with the city.

Kehriotis is going to have a tough sell on his arena plan to the NBA if he doesn't have money nailed down. Also while it is assumed that the Natomas building moratorium will be lifted at some point in the future if the Feds ever decide to fund some of the levee work. That might work against him committing to the site.

Yes, I know they are free to consider other offers but the question was would they? I seem to recall just recently the Maloofs put a message out that if the Seattle deal fell through, they would keep the team. This was the first time I recalled that they were open to other bids, even one from Sacramento, in terms of selling since the Seattle deal was announced. I put the question mark because I wasn't sure if my recollection was correct. Kehriotis may have flushed them out and got them to put it on record, inadvertent or not.
