MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has changed his political uniform from red to blue and is talking again about running for governor of Alabama, possibly in 2010.
"Alabama, that's my home. I'm thinking about running for governor; they need the help," Barkley said.
His decision was received warmly by Joe Turnham, Alabama's Democratic Party chairman, but with skepticism by a political observer.

Something tells me that Charles is not going to do it. There was talk about it ten years ago, and he never did. And 2010 is a long ways off, so I think he's going to change his mind.

And besides, what experience does Sir Charles have, in terms of local or community activism? If I were living in Alabama, I am not going to vote for a person just because he is a famous ex-athlete.

If you want to see another ex-jock in politics, take a look at former Pittsburgh Steeler player Lynn Swann. He's actually running for Pennsylvania state governor this year! At least, he seems more credible a candidate than Sir Charles!

I've been wondering how long it would take Chuck to do this...I met him a few years back at a private party for a celeb. golf tourney, and candidly asked him about it and he said 'Yeah, I know, all y'all just wanna keep me in a suit.' :D Then I got a picture with him and he said 'Man, I feel like I'm back in Japan, like some tourists comin' up to me for pictures all over!' :D I think he'll run, eventually...just wish he hadnt switched parties. Ha! Either way, he's one of the smartest and nicest guys you'll ever meet, and would make a great Gov., IMO.
