Chad Ford says in Mock Draft IV...

Fresno King

Starter
The Kings will select...

Alexander Johnson-Florida State (6'10" 23O lbs-Florida State)

Positives: Johnson is an interesting prospect that will be watched closely by scouts. He's got the body, toughness, skills and athleticism to be an excellent NBA four. Scouts say Johnson possesses a 40-inch vertical which is pretty amazing for a big guy. He's also shown great speed for a big guy ever since he shed 25 pounds last summer. Despite the weight loss, Johnson remains one of the toughest power forwards in the draft. He uses his body well to gain position in the post and has a soft touch around the basket. He also possesses a nice jumper with range all the way to the college 3-point line.

Negatives: Scouts question his size (he stands about 6-foot-9 in shoes) in part because he possesses just an average wingspan. But his explosiveness off the floor makes up for some of that. Other scouts wonder if he'll continue to keep himself in shape after making the NBA. His weight loss dramatically improved his game. Can he keep it off? The fact that he turned 23 in February also works against him.

Summary: Could Johnson be a first-round pick come draft night? His workouts in Orlando wowed scouts. He's also getting great feedback from NBA teams in individual workouts. There's always a need for athletic, physical fours with good offensive tools. A sleeper. Could go as high as the Bulls at No. 16, the Nets at No. 22, the Mavs at No. 28 or the Rockets at No. 32.

Scouts Inc. Evaluation: Johnson is one of the more underrated power forwards in this year's draft. He has the body, skill and toughness to play the position at the next level. Although Tyrus Thomas and LaMarcus Aldridge have received most of the hype, scouts covet Johnson. Don't be shocked if gets picked a lot earlier than some of the bigger names.
A rugged and strong power forward with excellent hands, Johnson can bump you in the post as well as face up and score from 12-15 feet. He has long arms and is extremely competitive on the block. Think of a less-polished Rasheed Wallace. Although we did not see this at Florida State this year, Johnson has a jump shot with range out to the college 3-point line. The ability to stretch defenses and run pick-and-pops will make him more desirable. Johnson battled some weight issues early in his career, which slowed down his development, but he trimmed down about 25 pounds. The weight loss really helped his ability to run the floor. Johnson established himself as one of the ACC's top big men this past season and should be drafted in the first round, somewhere in the late teens to mid 20s.

I'd be fine with that. It would probably mean that KT is on his way out. Also, why doesn't Johnson appear in either the measurements or the athletic test scores? I know he's athletic, but is he long?

I don't see how him being "long" has to do w/ anything, we're not looking for THAT kind of players...

btw, his wing span is over 7ft according to nbadraft. they also rank him going in the last 2nd round. he seems to be all over the place. If the Kings do p/u Sene or Rondo, it would be a great bonus if Petries signs him as an undrafted player. Same w/ Leon Powe.

I think he's boosted up a lot real fast based on a strong finish to his junior season, and then when teams got to see him in workouts and saw how athletic and strong he is now. The more I read about him the more I like him.

Reading this type of stuff about Alexander Johnson makes him sound like a stud. Big men that have that type of body, athletic capability, skills and some toughness on top of it aren't supposed to last until #19. On the other hand, Jamaal Magloire (a solid starting center) and Zach Randolph (who was on the way to perennial All-Star status before his attitude and knee went sour). It's almost too good to be true. Either he's not really that good or he's going before we get a chance to take him... or maybe it's true and Petrie has Alexander lined up as his next slick acquisition.

Where'd this come from? Considering I've never seen him anywhere close to being on a Kings mock draft, it smacks of Petrie enough to make sense. Not that I want to give Chad Ford too much credit ;)

I could definitely see this happening. And yes, KT is on the way out, as we tried to trade him last year. No reason not to, now.

Actually, a lot of mock drafts have him going before the Kings pick at 19. This isn't out of nowhere, Johnson is a legitimate first-round pick. If anything, you can critisize Chad Ford for being late to the bandwagon. And really, considering how much teams covet athletic bigmen in the draft, I'd be surprised if Johnson is still available whent he Kings pick. He'd be a solid pick though if he is still available.

The biggest knocks I've seen against him are his small hands (fumbles the ball a lot), lack of court vision, and his age (23yo). His season average isn't very impressive, 13pt 7reb, but he really have alive at the end of the year. He apparently lost ~20-30lbs from his sophomore to junior year, and its made him a completely different player. I won't mind Petrie drafting him, hopefully it signals that we'll be trading KT.

If he can be a less polished Rasheed Wallace(without the complaining) we could definitely use him. He jumps really high, can score in the post, has a decent jumpshot, is unselfish, and probably plays defense pretty well. I say DRAFT HIM GEOFF. NO MORE GUARDS.

These things in particular seem to reek Petrie to me. Cisco was older, and many of our successful picks seemed to come out of nowhere. We'll see on Wednesday.

Guys that were slated to go in round two, or not drafted at all suddenly going mid first round because of good workouts are not the guys I want on my team.

Why list him as 6'10" 230 and then say he is barely 6'9"? I can understand why his agent or "his people" would try to inflate his size, but if this is supposed to be an unbiased mock draft, why not pick one size and stick with it?

Actually, barely 6'9" in shoes makes about 6'7"-6'8"...former butterball who lost some weight...ack, it IS Kenny Thomas.

How about we get a big man who is actually BIG for once? That would be cool. Guess when you are picking where we are, you just have to take what you can get. At least he might be a physical presence. But you know who he sounds like? Older. 6'8" 225. Chiseled body. Athlete. Main skill = rebounding.

It would be nice if the Kings simply put a mark up on the wall and had players stand next to it. If their head didn't reach the mark, they wouldn't make the cut... just like getting onto rides at Disneyland.

You suggest to include in the physical? :)

Oh, he's definitely taller than Kenny and although he did have some extra pounds he was never as "wide" as KT was at UNM.

Just for the record, I watched a few FSU games last year, he hustles, for the most part. His post game is in need. He rebounds the ball, he kind of reminds me of Michael Smith, formerly of our Kings. Funny thing is, on 4 different draft sites, 3 have him listed at 6'9 and 1 at 6'10...which I could care less about, its the weight thing that is kind of funny...one has him listed at 225, another 230, another 245, and yet another even upwards of 250. Hopefully he pulls back from the dinner table every once and a while, he could turn out to be another Tractor Traylor down the road if he's not carefull.

poser, anyway you can rip on KT you take it dont ya.:)

i was thinking charles barkley, myself.

Well, just remember... Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

;)

Unless you have the whole AM/PM dial on it than it would only be once..

I think in Chad Fords case he has that AM/PM dial on him. So once out of 1440 times he is right.

I think the Hornets would get him before us with either of their picks... but, I'd definitely be happy with that pick. Guy is intriguing as hell, and big.

^^Ya I'd definitely be stoked about us getting him as well. Teams do take players that don't work out for them. Not very often, but it does happen.
