Captain Shareef

I was just looking through Kings.com roster page, and I noticed that they have made Shareef the Captain of the team. I think it's a good move, he is by far our best player this year so far. This little gesture towards Shareef might get something into Bibbys' head that he has to pick it up on defence, and work a little harder.
What do you guys think about this move?

Optimus,

I'm Devi's cousin - first, let me say he's sorry if he offended you. He was just upset at the game and upset you told him to "shut up". He's sorry.

Second, being that I'm his cousin, I'm also a Reef nut. Went to school with him at Wheeler.

Anyhow - I think it's a good move. Reef has been the rock for this team at this point. He's there when we've needed him. It's unfortunate that it hasn't translated into the W/L column.

Personally, I wouldn't have shed a tear if Miller got the nod either. I've been overly impressed with Miller this year. Very stable and has been smart with the ball.

Always got the impression that he wasn't that outspoken, but his play will earn him respect and nobody else appears to be jumping into that role. Why not...

I feel bad for SAR; thinking he has finally landed on a winning team and going to the Playoffs. I know, I know, it's still way early... but why do I have this depressing feeling we are not going to make the playoffs. :(

At this point, he and Wells appear to be the only two working really hard to make it happen, though.

I don't necessarily agree.

Miller hasn't been a bump on a log.

The problem I have with Wells is that he forces a lot of things and because of that, I percieve him playing outside of the offense.

Well going by his on-court performances so far this year, there has not been anyone better for us. Reef has been consistently good for us.

Having said that, to me he is not really a leader. He is too much of an introvert to be a leader. A very polished player but I am not sure his leadership skills are all that great. Having said that, he is probably a great locker room presence and he has the respect of his peers.

There wasn't anyone else that really stood out so, we can't really be against this choice.

The very first thing that any leader needs is respect from his peers and by all indications he has it. Tim Duncan is an introvert, but is respected by his peers and there's no question that he's the leader on that team.

i was not a big proponent of the SAR acquisition during the off-season, not because i necessarily dislike SAR's game, but because it didn't necessarily address our needs. but, given the kings current situation, i'm very happy to have him. he may not be playing the most intense and aggressive game, defensively, but he's bringing it every night, and thats more than can be said of bibby or peja. thru 3 games, i'd say he's the only one deserving of a captain title. wells' play has been solid, but it may take a bit longer for him to learn to play within the context of the offense. his rebounding alone, tho, is enough to redeem him of any on-court mistakes, imo. he's bringing it. that's more than can be said of peja or bibby. miller has been so-so. sometimes he looks great, but he's doing like he usually does. he allows himself to get taken outta the game. sometimes he lets an opponent or the refs get inside his head, and he loses focus that way. other times, he's too passive, and removes himself from the offense because of too-unselfish basketball. none of our big 3 are prepared to "step it up" right now. reef and wells get my vote as co-captains. give our supposed big 3 something to think about.

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like bad karma on the side of Shareef, but i still think we have a solid chance at making the playoffs, the west seems much more diluted to me right now, the spurs being the only exception. we should be able to grab the 6-8 spot. Adelman has got his work cut out for him thats for sure though. this year more than ever it seems he's got to start figuring out who he should play and when. Thomas for example, just always seems to put the team in a funk. And last night I thought Martin was doing a good job and probably should of stayed in longer rather than su8bbing peja back in. As far as Shareef being captain, I just dont know if it matters. Both he and Bibby seem to be the logical choices, but they're both too passive right now. And i just don't see that changing much.

I agree Peja deserved to sit, but I fail to see what people keep seeing in Martin. I know he's young, and I'm willing to give him some time, but he has been pretty awful...just lost out there. I keep hearing he's athletic, and that's obvious, but without skill and instinct (which he will build with time), athleticism only takes you so far. I've resorted to groaning everytime RA pulls Bonzi for Martin (and yes, I realize Bonzi can't play the whole game).

EDIT: Sorry to derail the thread...

This is his first real role on an NBA team, and I think he's played pretty good out there, he still needs to find a niche with the offence I realize that and he knows that too, I think when he starts becoming more comfortable with his role, he could play a big role for us, its not like he's out there missing all of his shots, he's been good for us and if you think about what he could possibly bring to the team when he finds that niche, that alone is enough upside to see that this kid could be big for us, he's quick, athletic, and hussles, something very rare in Kings land these days.
