Parker and the Los Angeles Sparks announced today that the WNBA star is pregnant with her first child and is due this spring.
"Shelden and I are very excited to be expanding our family," Parker said in a Sparks press release. "We feel blessed and look forward to becoming parents."
The news leaked after Parker did not join UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia, where she said she was scheduled to play this month.

Believe me, the Lakers wouldn't want him. He can go to the Clippers...I don't care. Maybe he would fit better on the Sparks?? ;) He might actually get to play.

Well let me first say I'm not a WNBA fan, it's just not my thing. That being said, possibly the greatest player the WNBA has ever seen gets pregnant after her rookie season.....awesome .

You know, it's called life....it happens. It only becomes eye rolley to some people because the players in the WNBA actually have their parenthood affect their season, unlike the players in the NBA who can father children without much consequence or conscience if they so desire. The double-standard is alive and well in sports I guess too...

and missing a season at age 22? I'd say her career and league will be fine. "The other greatest players the league has ever seen" will still be playing.

Bearing children presents a natural double standard. Needless to say, it doesn't help her team in the least. But, as you say, it's life. Not that there's nothing you can do about it, but it would be beyond the pale to require that your players don't get pregnant.

I disagree that the WNBA will be fine without her. Probably the most popular franchise losing it's best player (this is the second time this has happened to the Sparks, isn't it?), shortly after the most successful franchise folds? I think her absence could be very detrimental to the league.

Surely there's a joke about Shelden and scoring somewhere around here...anyone?

In all seriousness, congrats to the two. Parenthood is exciting.

The league isn't dependent on her soley for its existence in the 2009 season. If the league were THAT dependent on a player, heaven help the league if she suffered a more career threatening injury that merely giving birth in the spring.

I'll grant that she is probably the most recognizable player the league has, but it's not like she walked away forever.

The Comets situation is worlds different. AFAIC, it didn't need to happen and the league *'ed that up. The economy is what threatens this and any other league...

um...not to digress completely from the topic...;)

I don't get it at all... I know they are financially well off, and a lot of women would rather have kids when they are younger so that it's easier to work off the mommy fat plus it's healthier for mom+baby. The part I don't get is that she hurt the team that is counting on her. I would think she would owe it to her team to advise them that she was trying to get pregnant and would most likely be pregnant and miss the next season by the time the new season rolls around. I don't know if she did so I cannot criticize her for that. If she didn't though than I think it's wrong.

Sadly, I have known people that have kids to get a few months off of work (both men and women). I don't watch the WNBA at all, and if it went under I wouldn't care so it does not affect me. Wonder if the WNBA fans will say otherwise?

CONGRATS to Shelden, and Candace though!

That's actually the part that stuck me. Maybe you take these things for granted when you are younger, but the Sparks are legit title contenders right now. Now I have no idea how this pregenency will affect her ability for next season and I totally get there is more to life than basketball (especially for some people). However, if she is not at her best and misses the offseason of workouts and the Sparks window closes, Candace may regret that she did not wait a few years for this.

Amazing that people think accidents don't ever happen or that even if you are trying that you can plan it down to exact timing. It may not be any more planned than a blown knee, you know. Just a happier event, if you actually want kids.

Anyway, congratulations to Sheldan and Candace. :)

Hmmm Doc, methinks you are the touchy one....it's my opinion as well so sorry if it offends you that I have one that differs from yours so much that you have to comment on the fact that I posted it.

Just one other thought or two...it's entirely possible...since Ms. Parker is a highly trained and conditioned athlete that she could actually return to the court this season, since the mothers in the W have been a resilient bunch. I know most of you don't follow the W but the Monarchs DeMya Walker returned not only after having a baby, but after delivering her daughter via C-section....2 months later.

Those of you not familiar with the WNBA and it's schedule, the league is starting later this year and running later. If Parker delivers in "spring" (read: March or April) and takes 2 mos? She could be ready to start working out with her team in June...the start of the W season.

Secondly, these women comparatively aren't very well off, I would imagine tho that she has lost about 250K minimum in an offseason overseas contract by not being able to play this winter. However, given that she'll turn 23 shortly her earning potential is still off the charts in terms of the haul she'll make overseas to compliment her W salary. She's not going to lose much $ over the summer since the W CBA does contain a maternity provision.

With the number of WNBA players who have had children, I always find the conversation fascinating when it concerns carelessness or selfishness on the part of the woman. Like everday is a given and childbearing is a given and you can or should schedule it whenever. Not just here but among more rabid WNBA fans who follow the entire league and not just casually.

ps..I'm not actually sorry you took offense to my post that you had to snap at me about it. That's why I'm back answering it. I could care less what your opinion is, you post it...it's fair game. Or do you play by rules different than everybody else?

Congrats Candace! Good work, Shelden! ;)

Why am I not surprised at the lack of decency or perspective from fans on a sports site? Only here, does bouncing a stupid ball mean more than bringing another life into this world. What next? Are we going to "speculate" about when a woman should get pregnant, which is none of our business?
