I doubt this, they did not give him that money just to see his minutes that low. they expected him to contribute when they signed him and there not gonna see him contribute if hes gonna play around 20-22MPG.

I don't think you can expect 12-14 points per game with the minutes he's going to get - in the low 20s per game, at the most. Also don't think PPG should just be taken into account with Salmons - assists, rebounds, steals, running the point, handling the ball, pressure defense, and man-to-man defense. I expect him to contribute effectively in those areas, or at least most of them, in the time he'll get. To sum it up, what Salmons should and I think will bring is versatility and athleticism on both ends of the floor off the bench.

Also have to take into account he'll have an increased and consistent role with the Kings (not meaning minutes), instead of just having that sometimes during the season with Philly. Which was much less than what his ultimate situation was with the Sixers.

They gave him that money because that's similar to what he was getting offered before us. 20-22 MPG isn't the area I meant when I said in low 20s. You assumed that. What I meant was 23-24. Regardless, you can't put an exact on his MPG yet. But I do know he'll get good minutes off the bench, and I'm not expecting low teen PPG from him. Based on what I've variously and pretty significantly, seen and read of Salmons - I expect from Salmons is what I said in my previous post.

Where do you expect Salmons to get more than a maiximum of about 20+ minutes? At best, he'll be backing up Martin and possibly swinging around to the 1 and maybe even the 3. That's why we got him. He's versatile. He's not going to start, he doesn't have any illusions of starting.

I suspect they gave him the money they did because of his versatility and whatever they've seen that we don't know or appreciate.

Regardless, you keep implying that Salmons is Bonzi's replacement and that is simply WRONG.

Tend to agree there.

Sources: Wells fires agent

Free agent and former Kings shooting guard Bonzi Wells still doesn't have a contract, but it appears he will have a new agent.

According to two agents, Wells has fired William Phillips, who could not broker a deal for his only NBA client.

Coming off a wondrous postseason, Wells was considered among the top free agents. But Wells and Phillips reportedly turned down a five-year, $36 million offer from the Kings. Phillips said he was negotiating with six teams, but no deal was consummated.

Wells has informed the Kings that he would like to return, a notion Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said was impractical because payroll is approaching the luxury tax threshold. Also, they signed John Salmons to replace Wells.

Phillips did not return an e-mail seeking comment.

seriously isnt this enough to quench Petrie's slighted ego, sign the guy already and worry about the luxury tax later, don't we have til later in the year to get under it anyway?

As Petrie said it isn't practicle. He has made that pretty clear with the amount of og's we have. signing Bonzi when you have a more than ready Kevin Martin on the roster along with Garcia, Douby, Salmons is stupid. If anything sign and trade of a viable Big but not for Bonzi himself that ship has sailed in fact this thread should be in the NBA threas as Bonzi isn't a king. Unless they think Bonzi can fill the PF spot. Barkley did it and Bonzi is about the same size as Barkley was then.

I still don't like the whole "The Kings have moved on" thing... Sounds a little like cutting off your nose to spite your face to me...

I think it's hilarious that everyone knows to within 2 minutes how much playing time everyone is going to get per game.

We have a new coach and a new system (in addition to all the changes to Rick's system over the past couple years) meaning who knows who is going to be the backups right now. And I don't even want to talk about the Kings injury history.....

If Bonzi wants to hire a new agent and reopen negotiations with the Kings, I'm all for it. If we can get him for cheap, stockpile the talent. You can always turn around and trade it later. If Denver is so interested in Bonzi, let's trade 3:1 and get a quality big, for instance, using a few of these stockpiled smalls with good talent:salary ratios.

I'm pretty sure Petrie's not the person truly worried about the luxury tax--it's the Maloofs. That was their philosophy when they first became owners, but times have changed. While we're on the subject of times having changed, when teams know you're desperate to get under the tax threshold, it'll cost you a fortune to get rid of salary--i'm thinking first round picks here, like the Jon Barry deal. I don't think it's worth doing that for Bonzi on a one-year contract.

If we can get Bonzi back but we don't want to then maybe the Kings are the blame, yes maybe the Kings are still upset how Bonzi and his agent treated them at first but alot of things happen like that. Bonzi is worth getting over the luxury tax.

There's an outside chance this might actually change things, especially if its true that Artest is still agitating for his return.

John Salmons could still have a role as a backup PG even if Bonzi returned. An immensely overpriced backup PG, but it is what it is.

Occasional tell-them-what-they-want-to-hear puffery aside, I do not see us going over the tax threshold for just about anything. But those ideas about dumping one of our frontcourt salaries to make room for Bonzi under the cap actually become intriguing with him firing his agent. Gets rid of much of the pride factor, and lets him maybe come slinking back into town with both sides saying that's what he wanted all along, and it was just the bad ole agent who got in the way.

Actually if I was Bonzi the first people I would call would be the Maloofs themselves to see if I could get the overly emotional owners enthused enough to put pressure on the walking calculator who sits in the GMs chair.

very well said, Brick! This changes things ALOT! I think, obviously, that this whole situation should be drawing to a close in the next couple weeks leading up to training camp...where Bonzi lands I think is now up to him, and no one else. Who knows...

Good points, and agreed, Brick.

I know its a long shot but, the question that sticks in my mind and I am sure probably yours 113. What about Kevin Martin. He is more than ready to be teh starter. In my eyes I would actually prefer him over Bonzi. That said if the for some reason Bonzi is signed and Kev is pushed back to the bench once again when we already had the backup roles filled out what does that do to Martins state of mind as to how much faith this franchise has in him? Like is said as for me i would want Martin starting over Bonzi just because it allows Artest to play his style of game rather than Bonzi taking that role and Ron becoming perimeter player.

Not really. He makes less than some other backup PG's like Earl Watson, Derek Fisher, and Antonio Daniels. And he only makes a little bit more than Marcus Banks, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Chris Duhon, Damon Jones, Tyronn Lue, Brevin Knight, Carlos Arroyo, and Bobby Jackson. Plus Salmons can swing up to both the SG, or SF position which none of those guys can do.

I have more faith in Bonzi as our starting 2. He's more consistent and Kevin's defense and rebounding need work. Overall, I hope this can be worked out- he was suppose to be our main signing for the TDOS.

Kevin's defense was above average last season, as was his rebounding. Both will only improve with his work over the summer and gained experience.

Defense above average? Martin would get his steals here and there, but he was getting abused by the bigger larger 2 guards.

I agree with this. He's definitely a rising star. Let's not forget what getting Bonzi back will do to him mentally. If this move slows down Kevin's progression, I'd rather have him start for us. :)

Watson + Fisher + Daniels are all part time starter types who will notch 20+min a season (actually as was Salmons last year). But behind a major established star PG who never gets hurt like Bibby, you are talking 10-12 min or so of PG work for Salmons. Hence ignoring the subpar body of work in his career, the simple situation makes the $$ excessive.

In any case, worth it if talent falls back into your lap.

If you can sign Bonzi for a cheap salary, eat the tax.

I could care less if we kept Bonzi, but...on a cheaper salary, the guy would be in demand when the time came to actually being able to move him.

There is no way you allow him not to sign if it's for a reasonable amount of money.

The problem with the whole "Bonzi for a cheap salary" deal is that even on a cheap salary, the Kings could go over the luxury tax threshold, in which case not only do the Kings have to pay a bit of tax, they also do not receive any of the luxury tax paid by teams (except possibly for the part set aside for "league purposes"). So the "cheap salary" deal can get real expensive, real quick for the Maloofs--and ultimately, I'm sure most of here would love getting Bonzi back on any realistic salary--but we aren't the ones paying Bonzi--not directly, anyway.

Another issue is what do we mean by a "cheap 1-year deal"? I really don't think Bonzi's at the point yet where he's willing to accept a minimum deal just to play anywhere--I'm pretty sure if he were, some team would've offered him a contract. He can fire his agent and say he just wants to play somewhere all he wants, but the fact that he hasn't snuck onto any team yet makes you wonder whether he's still holding out for more than what you might expect.

if bonzi signs somewhere for this coming season, it will be for a one-year deal. nobody has the money available to sign him to the contract he wants, and bonzi is not going to sign a multi-year deal that nets him much less than he wants. bonzi wells may not be the kind of player you break the bank for, but a 5-year, $36 million is certainly fair market value for a player of his talent and caliber. unfortunately for bonzi, the kings have since rescinded that offer, and there is no other team available to offer as much. he'll sign a one-year deal so he can have a shot at a payday next offseason. a year older (and hopefully a year wiser), he will have discovered that his market value will have dropped, and he'll likely be inking a multi-year contract around $30-35 million or so. that's my prediction...

Bonzi can't sign a MLE deal if he wants a new deal next season, as you must sign for at least 2 years if you sign a MLE.

And, in 2 years..if he did sign a MLE, he'll get nothing more then a vet min contract.

His best move is to sign a long MLE deal right now, or just take a 1 year offer from somebody and try again next season.
