Bird fan asks for 33-year sentence

If the guy was stupid enough to pull an armed robery then shoot someone in the process it really is no surprise that he would ask for 3 more years to match his hero's number. "Stupid is as stupid does."

Looks like the victim lived. Apparently Bird has the better shot.

Rant Warning

A 27 year old "Legendary Felon" cuts a deal for armed robbery, attempted murder, and use of a firearm. Then he asks for three more years in honor of Larry Bird. That's three more years of free air conditioned lodging, cable tv, health care and conjugal visits from some woman he hasn't met yet, all on the dime of the fine citizens of Oklahoma. Estimated cost.........$100,000 in 2005 dollars. Cost over 33 years $1.1 million.

That's a lot of money that won't help the poor or the inferm, or the elderly or buy school supplies. A friend of mine just retired and has to pay $1,100 per month for medical insurance for his family. What a wonderful world we live in. Crime pays!

End of Rant

I know, I know, this thread for the most part is in jest, but here is how I am looking at it:

Asking for 3 more years may be to the DA's liking, but for 2 reasons, this is a bad idea:

A) this sets a precedent that people can extend their scentence. Do we really want lifers, who are "in the system" to be able to ask for more time? or to a more extream case, a person request life and get it (on the taxpayer's behalf)

B) when you are scentenced 30 years, it is because you earned 30 years. again, who flips the bill when he is in for longer? The taxpayer. You shouldn't be giving this guy any satisfaction on the taxpayer's behalf.

tubiscus,

Yeah, prison is a real picnic.

I wonder what the victim who he tried to shoot and kill would think about your post. My guess is that he would say it is worth every penny to keep this idiot behind bars so that he is punished for his violent crime and so that he cannot shoot and rob someone else.

But hey, if you would rather put violent criminals back on the streets so that kids can have more school supplies...

Actually, my complaint is that it costs too much to keep him in prison. Obviously being there isn't a problem for him, since he asked for more time. Personally, I'd prefer he assumed the ambient temperature, but I really don't want this to turn into a political (and prohibited on this forum) debate. My little rant was just that, a rant. That said, I hope he hates every day of the rest of his life.

I hope Bird at least sends him an autographed jersey.
LOL, seriously I would hope Lary would distance himself from a looser like this. Some low life shoots some one while pulling a job hardly deserves recognition, just a very long jail strech.
